When people are happy they praise. When people are sad they bitch. (except for iamaelephant, I think bitching *makes* him happy) You can't help it. Personally, I never really saw the delays nor the way they handled them as a big deal, when the game is good enough it will come out; thus I never...
Just to turn this into a possibly meaningful discussion, what about the photo makes you realize it's a photo and not in game?
I thought maybe it's the little extra details that otherwise would be cut out of a map to optimize it (satellite dishes and bars on windows), the detail on the floor...
I loved the vid but I can see where people would be unimpressed by the graphics. Personally I'd go for art over technology which is why I always thought Grim Fandango is one of the greatest looking games (and why I find HL2's lighting, archtitecture and style more than makes up for any graphical...
I thought that this post was pretty hard to follow because it goes off on tangents, doesn't seem to lead to any point and parts of it doesn't seem to fit or make sense. I think what turned people against you was:
1. you put Valve (on a HL2 fansite) under the 'engine first, game second'...
The Source engine was built after planning for HL2 (which started shortly after HL1). It is specifically designed for HL2 and to be mod-friendly (something they learned from HL1).
Source was not meant to be the engine of the future but an engine to last the next five years and allow us to play...
I think it is a fine idea if you flesh out your story and world a little more. It does seem to be 'just another vampire' idea right now so you have to put a bit more of a personal touch into it. Think up what the gameplay will be like, what the atmosphere would be like, the story, etc.
I'm not sure about the whole thing. All I know is that if you wanted to, there are plenty of games that you could spoil before you play it if you poke around the files; I think it was Thief that had all cinematics its available before you even started the game. The only reason not to do it is if...
I don't see it as games trying to catch up to movies/books in story. It's more that people like exciting things to happen when they play and developers started adding more details (characters, motives, conflicts, consequences, etc) to those exciting things and fleshing them out more and adding...
It's a good thing Valve put CS:S beta out rather than HL:S (which is a direct port) or you would be really dissapointed; seeing the same HL1 models and textures again.
Point: It's the art and stuff that goes into the engine that makes a game impressive.
I think that it is the telling of the story that is most important rather than how many twists it has or how original it is. Though I'm sure some excitement over plot details would be lost after looking at the material I still think the storytelling in the game will not be less powerful.
I really think that Stalker's lighting is looking to be the best of the bunch (after watching the dx9 vid on their website). They have soft shadows and they look great. If Valve can patch that into Source in the future that would be nice.
Vampire: because, based on what we've seen, it will have lots of dialogue well written and offering many different paths (and the characters look interesting). Stalker has shown no dialogue and their characters don't look that great. Besides that, Vampire has neat looking spells and abilities...
Well, IF HL2's promises of natural character interaction, in depth physics and complex scene scripting end up doing absolutely nothing to add to the game, then yes the same could be said for HL2.
Personally I think what 'next-gen' is is when many technological limitations are gone and brand new and innovative gameplay and experiences result from the new freedom. Now I haven't played D3 so this is based on conjecture but I haven't seen or heard of new or innovative gameplay which, I...
Welcome to the forums!
Firstly, I think that the bar for a story-orientated, narrative FPS will be raised. Valve's idea of interactive scenes promises to not only tell the story in a perfectly natural way but also let the player experience action/drama sequences more complex, believable and...
Doom3 is using some storytelling elements from HL but what story-orientated game today doesn't? As for actual plot, video games and specifically FPS's (or comic books for that matter) have never been considered as containing very orginal or creative plots in the first place. Usually the plots...
I think the whole point of this thread is just to say that HL2 is less interesting than other games and that acme420 doesn't really like it that much (of course he'll say that he thinks it will be a good game just not the best). The delay thing is just to hide the real point which could...
No hands in D3? What about here or here ?
I think all games have had hands on their guns, even when they are going for immersion, for 4 reasons:
1. The hand is pretty much a part of the weapon and sometimes a weapon on its own.
2. Since 99% of the time in most FPS's the player is holding a...
