Because the game simply wasn't done. They overestimated...bad planning (as doug and gabe have said since...I will find links if you'd like). He stated it around the time it was delayed.

Valve, Gabe, truly hoped the game would be out by then...they thought they could make sept 30th and missed it. Simple as that really. They blew it.

The game was delayed because it wasn't done (nothing to do with hardware or the theft).

truly tho.. i would like to know what it was that made the game incomplete. was there an insurmountable error or something, or was it the hardware. Or was it microsoft. If i ask a question, i generally like to be able to have facts to back up the answer. this is all i ever asked for. i then asked for something outside of the gaming industry, because my differing info came from outside as well.

in regards to my comment, if you have not flamed, i am truly sorry for including you in that crowd, your comment i just quoted was the exact type of respons i was looking for, and i've been greatly distracte by the flamewar i seem to have started. Well, we all posted numerous sources. There were two which specifcally said that Gabe said September 30th. I get them for you but I have to run. There's back a ways in the thread I think around page 4 or 5 maybe.

i don't have a point. i never did. i had unaswered questions, and some have been aswered. they have sparked further questions...so i have asked. This place should have all the answers, no? should be the best place, yes?

and i already researched everything. i did that before i created my idea weeks ago. Most of the ideas passed are assumptions based on fact, and although this is good info, i prefer to stick to publicised fact. a forum is not entirely public.

the hackers stated that "they took what valve had", that is somewhere on a major news website and i have no time to go through news sites, you can do it, try CNN, you may find it there.

On that note, only valve know the answer for absolute fact.

There will be no 100% fact in any direction why it was delayed....all we have is Gabe/Doug saying "It just wasn't done." And also "It wasn't because of the theft." (both can be found fairly quickly I would think)

I would say realistically the game just wasn't close to being done and they overestimated (a lot of games are delayed after all). I think the code theft added to the length of the delay in the end. I would say the Nvidia stuff probably added (somewhat) to it because obviously they wanted everyone to buy the game and nVidia is obviously a HUGE market. Not that they delayed the game because if nVidia, but I imagine they spent a LOT of time while building the game trying to make it work right for those cards work up to snuff.

But that's all speculation..and sadly we'll probably never know the absolute truth.

i thought about that...but why would he stress that the BENCHMARK, and not the game was coming out? Yes i know it was a hardware conference, and that it was geared to tekheads like myself, but who cares about a benchmark when you could have the game? Everyone known that it's reall game performance that makes the difference, and not benches. Perfect example is the nvida/ati fiasco with each manufacturer cheating in thier own way in 3dmark.

Me personal opinion is the game wasn't done at all. Not just DX9 or whatever....

I think a good portion (models/maps/sounds/engine/physics etc) of the actual content was incomplete.

I don't think it would have added a year+ to the time of the game finally being released otherwise.

And I believe the stolen build did work in dx8 and dx9....someone who has played it would have to confirm that though. I could be wrong on that though.

i've always held the opinion that the stolen build was just a compile of partial work for e3 2003, and that's based on the mark in the top right. like i said before, i heard that it was a harddrive that got stolen, and not a hack. i'll find the pics of the empty machine ( the vid card was scoffed as well) and post 'em but i think it may have been some other machine, but the 2 incidents just kinda fit together. If they truly wanted a sept 30th release, do you think htey would spend the time in that code to display that, or the game?

well i have and i can tell u everything is there that they had. why would they have 20 odd levels that werent even shown at e3? and all the models etc etc.

also last time i checked its pretty hard to steal a hard disk from america when your in germany. ( the guy they flew over for the fake interview to bust ). Gabe newel himself also gave a full account of his pc being compromised. I think that posts on HL2 world somewhere.
