A democratized forum idea

If Mugshots and Misc were closed for the reasons I possibly-erroneously-remember them being closed for, then my disdain for the mods* is completely legitimate.

*not all of them.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but werent the reasons because one person started spamming so they closed the entire thread? At least thats what happened to Misc.

So essentially, they closed it because they couldn't be bothered?

It was to teach us a lesson.

Because somehow we're at fault when a random spammer joins the forum and ****s things up.

Kamikazie sits in the corner waiting for this thread to get closed because the mods can't be bothered.

It was certainly fueled by personal opinions about the legitimacy of the thread.

I closed Mugshots because it was 6,000 posts long and you guys were just chatting in there far more than actually posting or discussing mugshots. It's not closed forever, feel free to make a new one in a week or so.

I didn't have anything to do with Miscellaneous being closed, but if the rest of the staff feels it was warranted then I'm fine with upholding that.

Yeah, we wouldnt want a confrontation now would we? :p

I keep telling you guys, all of this would be solved if you'd just have a few drinks and take up arms. And :arms:.

Then they would just do what the US is doing next week, and bring in the military to quell any civil unrest.

I'm perfectly fine with mugshots being closed. There's no longer a place for people to pressure me into posting a picture of myself. WEEEEEEEE.

Anyways... if this is a dictatorship, why do we peasants get to be so vocal? Shouldn't we be disallowed to hold public forum of opinion?

EDIT: And what's up with the Vagina Mafia titles?

Pi... you so silly doting all this attention and yet pretending you be hating.

Those happen every so often. A bunch of regular members get permabanned, the others ones rage for a couple of days and then they are forgotten entirely. The site administration continues whistling as we stroll merrily through history.

You can be as vocal as you want, it generally has very little impact on our opinions if it's complaining.

I also agree with the first mugshots being closed. I mean, if it makes the database load faster...

Well, you havent permabanned me yet, but if you ever do, the world will riot to the end of days. Because im awesome.

When we ban you, there never was a Krynn72. Just like there never was a Shasta.

You realise that if you close a thread, it still exists in the database, right?

I have a heap of mugshots piling up from grad day. If only there was a way to tell when Ennui would allow a new mugshots thread, instead of actually having to count days. Somebody! Get me a countdown gadget!

I remember somewhere (can't find it anymore) Ennui saying that active threads over 5,000 posts fragment the db or something.

Oh. That would explain that, then.

There's not a specific point where the huge threads start to be a db problem, the database is just healthier if active threads are shorter rather than longer.

So what you're saying is that its just Physics?

Essentially ;)

Raz, if you still want to pursue this idea, then develop it more. Come up with a strict set of rules (a constitution, if you will) for organization of the site's power structure. Rules for how members gain voting rights, how they lose them, what role moderators play, what role the site owner / admin plays, how votes for banning users are handled, et cetera.

I'm going to try for Halloween or a few days before. I wanna see some ****** costumes. If Enruiao closes it, then may Satan bless his soul. If not, may Satan bless his soul.

Socialists don't work.

Take digg.

It's a load of shit.

It's biased and opinionated.

It won't work.

As Ennui noted early on - thanks, btw, to all the mods coming in and going "we are dictatorship lulz" and missing the point - there are a lot of practical problems with implementing any kind of democratic system on the internet.

If it's voting for moderators, you create not only huge potential for corruption, but also a venemous atmosphere where a ruling caste, once elected, is extremely likely to concentrate all its energies not into managing the forum, but into ensuring its own position, by making concessions to trusted supporters and punishing, even banning detractors at the earliest provocation. Elected moderators are far more likely to devolve into a self-love club than chosen moderators ever are.

If it's voting for individual decisions, as I believe you proposed, the situation isn't much better. The forum again becomes a popularity arena, where, far from the rules of the forum being upheld in something close to objectivity, those not beloved of the mass are banned, and those who are able to promote themselves or be smarmy will survive. Moderation, as you envisage it, will never be able to curtail this without incurring enormous amounts of work and bureaucracy, and probably not even then.

It's highly amusing how most general arguments against forum democracy are identical to those against real democracy, and how vociferously we would protest against them when used in the real world, those of us who use them in this bizarro electronic one. But even I must admit that the situation is different 'here', and even you must admit that your plans would not work.

As I said. Digg. It's just like "LOL I LIKE MICROSOFT AND SO DOES EVERYONE AND ANYONE WHO LIKES STEVE BLOWJOBBS ISN'T EVEN GOING TO LOOK AT THIS OR THE COMMENTS SO LET'S DIGG THIS GUY WHO GAVE AN OBJECTIVE VIEW (SWITCHED CAPSLOCK ON AT THIS POINT COZ I COULDN'T BE BOTHERED HOLDING SHIFT) AND SLIGHTLY CRITISIZED M$ LOL BECAUSE IT'S LIKE WHAT WE DO BURY BURY BURY BURY BURY".

Just stupid.

Yeeesh what is with all the panic of bans being handed out because some of you expressed your opinions in this thread.

/promptly bans anyone who said anything bad against the mods.

- Serious -

Would never work on a large forum for the simple reason that members will get lost in the shuffle and assignation of mods. Just look at the 'fave .netter' and such like threads, some people always get mentioned while other long standing members don't often get mentioned. That is a perfect example of why something like only letting established community members become mods won't work. Also what would be the definition of an established member?

On a smaller forum, say ~50 members this can work within reason, anything more and chaos is likely to ensue.

It still only barely works. Everyone debates endlessly over anything involving voting, and takes forever for things to be decided.

;(

It's ok mate, I said your name. <3

No debates! Just votes!

Wham bam, thank you ma'am.
