A Thread For UK Elections 2005

Hey, they're all the rage in Hollywood. David Schwimmer's nose? You guessed it.

Absolutely. It boggles the ****ing mind. 'We're going to cut taxes, reduce public spending, and still run the NHS better than labour'

Nope. Sorry Howard. Not buying it.

Did anyone see Kennedy with Frost this morning? I was listening to him, and he made an insane amount of sense. They were talking about cannabis reclassification, and he was saying something along the lines of taking the emotive politics out of the equation and setting up an independant group to process research and take the appropriate actions. He also comes across as a genuine bloke.

I think Charles Kennedy is a good guy, i just don't agree with some of the Lib Dem's policies. I know they have a similar stand to Labour on Europe i.e. pro-Europe, not as pro as Labour though, but withdrawing British troops within a year from Iraq no matter what state it is in is stupid.

It must be nice for people living in the UK to be able to debate their own government without everyone from every other country telling them what to think, who to vote for and how terrible their country is. I couldn't imagine telling someone from the UK how to vote. Afterall I'm not from the UK and it is none of my business.

You make an awfully good point, sir. However you have every right to criticise our election should you wish.
The international community also scrutinised the elections in Afghanistan, Iraq, Zimbabwe and the Ukraine. It's not just the US so stop using that wounded tone when other countries take an interest in your politics.
No, why did people take an interest? Because they were either incredibly important or highly questionable. The US's election fits into both of those categories.
Remember that vast US-based multi-nationals influence political parties to help them with their own selfish ends. Thus, the administration's decisions affect the world.

Stop. Whining.

LOL, "wounded tone" and "whining." You managed to fit both of them into one post, very nice. Apparently a nerve was touched. What part of my post upset you? That wasn't the intention.

I believe what upset him was your isolationist statement, which essentially runs in contrary to what your government does.

He's saying - you affect the rest of the world in a big way, and so the rest of the world has a right to bitch about you.

My isolationist statement huh? LOL, okay, that's a new one.

I wish more than anything that our country was isolated just like we were before WWII. We were ridiculed very badly then as well. It's a loose-loose situation I guess. We were hated when we adopted an isolationist policy, we're hated now when we're involved globaly.

What is this big way that your personal, day to day life is ruined as a result of the US government?

Can we please not turn this into a US debate thread? This is about British politics.

No, your post didn't really upset me, I was merely pointing out that you sounded as if you felt hard done by. And that you were perfectly within your rights to criticise our election. So please do.

But, as Mr. Feeth said, this thread concerns UK Politics, so UK politics we shall...

That's it, I'm not voting for you.

I'm looking forward to the special Question times... the Dimbleby things. I like seeing the leaders get roasted on particular issues. And i like to compare them. I didnt think I was a swing voter, but you lot have unnerved me... you bastards :p

Feath said:

Feck.
Erm... Feath, dear boy, did I mention that one of my policies is to have Michael Howard drain the blood of anyone who calls you Feeth?
Yeah, that'll learn 'em.

Feath rimes with teeth :D

But really, how are the polls ?

Hmmmmm...UK politics is boring.

:D

/me runs

Well the Lib Dems have only become a genuine opposition over the last few years, since the last election, really.
Even so...

Well If I could vote this time round, i'd probably go conservative, possibly labour, though probably conservative. They make most sense to me. Smaller goverment, lower taxes, great news for everyone. Except civil servents. Slackers.

You realise that the Tories' promised tax cuts come at the detriment to public services, right?

Smaller Government?

EDIT: Actually, I think I get what you mean.

Nearly every other political party don't think that the Conservative tax plan won't work but they claim to have had it checked out. I wouldn't risk it myself.

Also, well done to Charles Kennedy (Well, his wife at least) for having a baby during the election campaign. Awww.

Yes, both are great people. It'd be fun if this wins them some votes :)

Yeah, except schools, the NHS, the elderly, the poor, blah, blah, etc

Nah it'd be really bad. Partly because it could mean further dragging in of the family into UK politics, as is done in the US - personally it makes me feel ill. Also, because it means there are people out there idiotic enough to cast their vote depending on who's the newest parent. <Shudders>
I'd like to see the Lib Dems get lots of votes, but not for those reasons.

But yeah: Congrats :)

Well, I meant his image. Y'know, Howard is sort of a vampire kinda man to a lot of people... Kennedy sort of comes out of this looking like a warm hearted family man. I wouldn't want it to ever turn into something like the US has.

I'm definattly voting Lib Dems in the local elections, I think i'll probably vote for them in the main vote aswell.

If I was old enough i'd be voting Ulster Unionists or Alliance party

And people in England, DONT vote labour, down with student top up fees

I would, by "nearly every other, I suppose you mean Labour and Lib Dem. What do you think they are going to do, compliment the tories on a great manifesto. It was approved by an independant think-tank, so I would trust it.

I would trust it a lot more than I would trust Blair anyway.

jondyfun said:

Except the conservativies are going to spend more money on the NHS, cut some council taxes for the elderly, and cut taxes for everyone, including poor people.

I was never a student because I despised the idea of leaving with a collosal debt I'd be hard pressed to eliminate. No amount of government credit schemes could've got me through University (and that, boys and girls, is why anyone who uses the "too poor" excuse for crime get's no sympathy from me). *ahem*

And the elimination of Civil Servants- forwarded by the Tories and initiated by Labour to go with the flow- is a laughably short sighted move.

Take the Rural Payments Agency- they've made their long-standing (and state-pension holding) workers redundant, and began drafting in twice their number in temps and other casual workers. It makes the government look like they're listening to public opinion (or at least pinching one of the Conservative's worst ideas) and saving money, but in reality the crossover is ponderously slow and the end result is not as big a money-saver as you might've thought.

As for freshly trained employees doing the work of veterans... *shudders*

"We [the UK's Civil Services] employ more people than the army employs soldiers!" barked one sensationalist Tory. Well, pal, so does Tesco.

The issue with the top-up fee's is that the Universities are in debt as it is... they arent getting enough money... my University asks for more to pay for our fieldtrips and we hardly have any of them anyway, some departments do commercial work to supplement the funds and buy equipment.
The Universities do need more money, and the only way they can get it is by attracting Allot of foreign students (who pay more fee's) or upping the charges. Top up fee's go some way to do this but not far enough. The issue needs to be addressed somehow.

I think i'll vote for Lib Dem in the main election, they wont get in but its something to atleast sorting the other 2 parties out... Lab and Con are just using each others policies that they never did years ago anyway... its rediculous electioneering.

Well, they would concentrate on other things if the Tory budget thingy was fesible.

I know the green party has called it stupid, as well.

I'd say this about Top up fees. The one thing I wish applied for current fees is the "you don't have to pay them back till you leave Uni" thing. £1175 a year really is a lot, and it'd be a lot better if you could pay for it after you leave Uni.

And about the Tories and Tuition Fees. They will get rid of them, but they will also charge commercial interest rates on loans. This would mean that students would end up paying more (or at least the same) when they leave Uni. So the Tories won't get rid of Student debt.

(How anti-Tory do I sound?)

EDIT: Also, the Green Party Manifesto is out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/pdfs/12_04_05_green_manifesto.pdf

Labour's is out tomorrow. And the Lib Dem's one should be out soonish.

Except for the fact that they're on record as admitting that they're power-hungry liars.
Many people have looked through their budget and found it to be fanciful at best; completely unworkable at worst.
The tax cuts come from somewhere, and that somewhere is public institutions.

And rightly so. Every day drawing closer to 5th May gives me slightly more worry of them actually getting power. Maybe I'll move to Transylvania...

Reading through the radio times today I came across an interesting poll on the great British public’s level of awareness on world events.

75% didn’t know who the German chancellor was.
54% didn’t know who the Russian president was.
15% didn’t know the reason for the Iraq war
65% didn’t know who massacred the Beslan schoolchildren.
60% didn’t know who ran against George Bush for the US presidency.

So with our great grasp on world events the great British public is about to go to the polling station and vote for our Government. Who will we vote for?

The Tories who promise us that matrons put in charge of fighting hospital super bugs, Head teachers have final say on school expulsions,40,000 more police, £ 36 Billion in saving, £8 billion towards the national debt, no tax increases ?

Labour who promise us; No increase in basic or top rate income tax ,Minimum wage to rise to £5.35 from October 2006,Increase home ownership by two million
Inflation target of 2%,No-one will have to wait more than 18 weeks to see a specialist from date of referral, Rebuild or refurbish every secondary school
Education or training for every 16 to 18-year-old ,Publicly-owned Royal Mail fully restored to "good health” ,Action to tackle guns and knives, Further Lords reform
Point system for immigrants?

The Liberal democrats who promise us all that labour and the Tories don’t.

Or best of all the Monster raving Looney who promise us Nappies for dogs, to prevent poos in parks, Centrally-heated bus shelters, Undo decimalisation, Sell the Dome to Arizona, where it can be rebuilt next to old London Bridge. Hunting with dogs to be restricted to one dog per fox, with only Daschunds and Old English sheep dogs permitted. Supporting Manchester United a criminal offence for those born south of Crewe.

Down the pub we rarely talk about politics but when we do, we all know where we stand.

“Remember that guy…John Prescott punching that guy in the hooter for throwing an egg at him, he gets my vote anyday.”
“What about Maggie she kicked them arggies up the arse, give me the Tories anyday”
“Yeah but remember that Tory sleaze ball who sucked them girls toes”
“TONY BLAIR…….. sick of the sight of him, vote him out”
“Remember Neil Kinnock far too ugly to be Prime Minister”

It is our democratic right to vote, and vote we will in droves. Based on the colour of his tie,his nice smile, maybe he looks a bit dodgy, that nice photo of him with a couple of small kids.
Some of us maybe will stay up into early morning watching Jon Snow’s Election Special 2005 as he talks through the results as they come in. His swingometer swinging from left to right and back again. Finally giving in to bordom or that one drink too many will nodd off. To wake in the morning wondering “ who the hell did I vote for yesterday?”

Those that voted for the winner will declare to themselves “Hey I voted for that guy”. After a few weeks in and after his first politic blunder those that didn’t vote for him will declare” Well I never voted that bloody idiot in “.

Veritarse came to my door today.

"Hello. Would you be interested in hearing our Veritas policies? As you probably know, Robert Kilroy-Silk is running here himself."
"Sure."
(2 minutes later of his dirty hatred)
"....Our country has been stolen! We need to win it back!"
"Get off my doorstep before I hit you, you filthy racist."
"Well there's.."
"You'd be a bit of a hypocrite for prosecuting someone who was "just defending his home" wouldn't you?"
"Yes, thank you for yo-"
"You too, arsehole."

Still, I got two leaflets with Kilroy's perma-smug, perma-tanned face on it.

I haven't had anyone come to my door. I'm so unloved.

Oh Kangy, if only gay marriage were legal I'd propose to you right now.
It's worth those c*nts coming to my door just so I can give 'em a piece of my mind.
