argh..Im beliving to think the US is almost as backwards ME Country's.
 
Does the USA have people with dangerous religious ideas? Yes.
Do these ideas hold a significant influence over domestic and foreign issues? Yes.
Is it as bad as the Middle East? No.

As I mentioned in another topic, the widespread religion in the United States is a bastardized version of Christianity. Despite the inanity of it, it is better than hardcore fundamentalism. People like to pretend creationism is valid, that their god exists and is infallible, and that the USA should be run as a Christian nation. But the vast majority of the Old Testament has been disregarded in no small part due to secularism, rationalism, and modern notions of morality. It's mostly lip service nowadays. It's still powerful, but it seems to be an internally-driven belief system that has yet to become aware of its own irrelevant and outdated nature.

Much of the religious fanaticism in the Middle East has yet to be curbed by modern secular progress. Homosexuals and rape victims are sentenced to death. Beheadings are common place. A cry for conquest may be mirrored in some parts with the US, but it is far more explicit.

That said, an urging for honest discourse is beginning to grow here, in my opinion. That's not just among atheists, but even many theists. We still have many, many problems. And it will take decades to address them all. But it's my optimistic hope that an awareness of all this religious rhetoric has begun to plant itself and will eventually drive out dogma.

If you have moved to the United States. The only tip I can offer would be, move to a smaller city. Trust me, very few bad things seem to happen in small towns.


Yes we are quite a backwards nation, and I hate how christianity has sweeped the nation. I know it looks backwards about our gun control policies and how we still have capital punishment.

Although for the most part, I rarely hear about christanity crap. It stays out of the school system pretty well. Because if they teach that, then they have to teach about all the other no_basis theories. Such as the flying spaghetti monster.

While America in other nations may sound like a wreck and backwards... Life is pretty good and most crap you hear is just politics. There are cultural differences though(America was created as a more individualistic nation vs European countries(especially sweeden and such) arn't).

All I can say is, thats America Bitch.
 
One of the few semi-decent things about the UK is the fact that religion pretends to stay as far away as possible from the government. Rational thought and logic, however, are still not being used when deciding upon new policies :)

oh and btw in small town (aprox 7000 people) Bath Michigan the largest school massacre ever occured back in 1927 when a school trustee bombed the schoolhouse killing 45 people, most of them children

Port Arthur Massacre:

At around 1:30 p.m., Bryant re-entered the Broad Arrow Cafe and removed an AR15 5.56 mm rifle from his bag and commenced firing. At a petrol station along the way he saw a Toyota with two occupants, a man and a woman. Bryant forced the man at gunpoint into the boot of the BMW, then shot the woman dead. He then drove the BMW on to the guesthouse, arriving a few minutes before 2:00 p.m.

Here he shot at several passing vehicles, injuring two more people. Bryant then released the man from the boot of the BMW, handcuffed him to a railing inside the guesthouse, and set the BMW on fire. Within two hours, two policemen approached the guesthouse but were pinned down in a roadside ditch for several hours. Six hours later a team from the Tasmanian Police Special Operations Group had arrived, and an 18-hour standoff ensued.

Of course there is going to be violence in the states. We allow guns and push to be very individualistic. Hell we still have and use capital punishment. However I've spoken with someone from an asian country(i forgot what it was called). He took America as a place of chaos. However, America from my actual experience of living here all my life tells me that it's pretty damn peaceful.

However I am willing to say, at least 1/4 of Americans are retards.

It's still nowhere near as bad as the Middle East. The US treats its' citizens far better than most/all ME countries and does not enforce religious law. When it comes to propaganda all countries do that, and there are numerous other sources of information that are completely unregulated. When it comes to human rights, again, holy shit ... we're talking about the middle east. As far as invasions ... they fight each other all the time just not very successfully (although we're not too successful either right now).

And although, yes, most Americans are stupid ... most people period are stupid. The US has done remarkably well at keeping religion out of the government despite huge opposition.

I LIVE in a small town, and around other small ass towns. Theres stuff that goes on here, of course. Yeah sometimes people die(not usually from guns though, around here it 80% of the time has something to do with drinking).

Drinking is very common in Wisconsin..... we're mostly german descent afterall. Ussually by age 12 - 14 your going to parties with beer and getting wasted off your ass. So yeah, you shouldn't be to worried about school shootings but rather making it home if your driving/have a drunk driver.

I'd say the US has done a piss-poor job at keeping religion out of the government. It's plastered all over it's currency (In God we Trust), there are states where you cannot run for office unless you believe in God, the leader of the country considers athiests unpatriotic (and therefore shouldn't be citizens (his words)), people in the country are attempting to suppress and re-write science and history in favor of religion, etc.

It's not even about religion.
It's apparently racist to make an (evidently justified) generalisation about the Middle East, but common sense to make a similar generalisation about America. Now, while America may be permeated with ignorance, it doesn't even approach the scale of ignorance in the Middle East, and despite America's apparent "backwardsness", somehow it still manages to remain the country most people want to get into, few people want to get out of, and a world leader in every major field.
On the other hand, what the **** have the Arabs done for us lately?
 
America is not full of dangerous thinking people. The world is full of dangerous thinking people. I will readily defend this country against those of you who would state that Americans are, on average, any less intelligent or well-intended than people in Europe or the rest of the world.

Even if I hate our foreign policy. This country is wonderful.
