I'm upgrading my motherboard, cpu and the ram. I'll buy this stuff next month or this month:

  • AMD Athlon XP2500+ 1.833 GHz 333 MHz bus- Socket A (Barton) CPU, 512 kb
  • Abit NF7-S V2.0 Motherboard Socket A S-ATA - nForce2-SPP/MCP-T2, ATX,1394, SATA KIT
  • 512MB Dual DDR - 2 x TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 256MB CL2.5 - Memory 184-P (DDR-PC400MHz) (AMD OK)

That will cost about $350. Then my system will be:
Abit NF7-S V2.0
XP2500+ Barton (will be oc'ed to match a 3000+ or higher)
512MB Dual DDR
Seagate Barracuda V 80GB (and some other small hdd's)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Sapphire ATi Radeon 9500 Pro

The old parts will be a HL2/web/ftp/shell server. :) (AMD TB 1,266 GHz, MSI K7T, 512mb sdram)

Looks like everyone is going for a Radeon 9800. I just might do the same, since there isn't anything else to upgrade. :)

I'm going to try to scrape some money together and upgrade my video card from GeForce2 to
Radeon 9500Pro (or higher depending on how much prices will drop) I might need to get a better power supply for that.
+512RAM
Eventually Batron 3000+

I'm gonna buy probably a Asus P4P800 mobo, with a 2.8 ghz (533 FSB, boxed) processor. It will cost around 400 euro.

Now i have a XP 1800+, 256 pc-2100 ddr, and a ati radeon 9700 pro , so it will be a :

Asus P4P800 mobo
Intel pentium 4 2.8 ghz
Ati Radeon 9700 pro
256 pc-2100 ddr ( will upgrade to the standards of my mobo when i have the money again :))

And i earn it, i worked hard for my money :p

No way... I think my P4 2'26 and my ti 4200 still they have life in them. I'll just wait at least a year to upgrade, no matter if I can play HL2 with all the bells and whistles or not. Besides, my comp handles more than fine any other tasks apart from gaming, so I don't see a reson to upgrade so soon.

hi

First: Hi all!!! I`m new here!!!
I`ve just updated my comp a bit, now I`ve got a: (look at signature)
I think this should be enough to play hl2 with all details (frames: 35fps and more)
:stare:

Im not going to upgrade. Im going to swap my ti4800 with my bros 9500 so I can use DX 9.0 stuff :)

I just got a new 512 stick of DDR ram which brings me to 768 which I desperately needed.

Also I saw best buy had the 9700 PRO for 350$ under clearence so I went to buy it but they were sold out. Then I tried futureshop a few days later but they had it for 500$ so I told the guy best buy had it for 350. So he gave me the card for that price but first tried calling best buy and they wouldn't pick up. Good thing too because they took the price down and it was no longer on file.

pentium 4 3.0mhz w/ mobo
120gb 7200rpm harddrive
512mb corsair
radeon 9800 pro
and a sexy new case :D

soon i'll have money for the processor mobo. next comes the card. the ram and harddrive. then maybe a new monitor :D and lastly a sexy case.

i'm waiting for benchmarks from HL2 and FarCry before i decide what to upgrade!

im upgrading soon to a P4 2,4 mhz and Radeon 9800pro
then my system will be something like;
P4 2,4
512 ddr ram
Radeon 9800 Pro
80 GB HD

i have already upgraded my computer ;)

-Sapphire 9800 pro
-AMD 2100@ 2.3 Ghz (365mhz fsb)
-512 pc400 DDR Ram

  :afro:

LOL DUDE. I got a brand new 9800pro 128 for $300. $350 for a 9700pro is too much. I was going to call it a rip off, but the 9700pro is a great card. You can get one for under $300

Yep. I am totally re-building my computer. Just going to sell my old one. Alreadt bought all the parts and right now I'm busy on modding out the case. But, I still need to buy my watercooling kit. It won't be a real "kit" I will actually pick the individual parts(pumps, radiators etc) and then assemble it myself. :)

i have a P III screwed-up junky-o-machine. when HL2 comes out, i'm just gonna get a brand new computer.......

@Elite Suspect:

a Radeon 9800 Pro costs 500, beware of ripoffs!

Why buy something from bestbuy? Unless its an emergency or a nice sale. Its usually like $100 more for things there.

im lucky i found an Xtasy 9800pro 128 with a lot of rebates. 2 $50 rebates making it $300.

whats the point of upgrading when hl2 is geared for such sissy computers?

What's the point of posting if you have no reasonable response?

On topic, I've already upgraded to FX 5900. I'm not worried about 5900 Vs. 9800, because I simply don't care that much. I know it's a difference, but I'm going to be indulged within the gameplay anyways.

I'm upgrading... but not only for half-life2... for Doom and all others great games coming...
I have the money right now ( 2500$ )
But i don't know if i should wait for the next generation of card and the ahtlon64...

it's hard to wait... i don't have any more patience :D

what should i do? buy a p4 3ghz, 512mb ddr500mhz, with an ati 9800 or nvidia 5900.. for around 1500$ can? or wait?

Currently i have a Pentium III 666mhz @ 750MHz woohoo! :)
384mb and a geforce2 ti... i can't play newer games.. I heard that many Geforce FX 5900 users have a flickering problem with their cards.... and well i always had a Nvidia card and i like them... i don't know with ATi.... it's just...
Doesnt sound good in my ears:| ...

It depends on what you have now. If it's average to good, wait for the next-gen. If it's pretty crappy, then go ahead and get it now.
No sense in upgrading a small bit when you can wait and still enjoy Half-Life 2's greatness.

Upgraded:

Added 256 stick of DDR to total 512 DDR Ram

Yet to upgrade:

ATI Radion 9800pro 128 MB

You could SURELY do without the DDR500. Only would need that if you bought like... a 2.4c and OCed alot, thats why i got PC3700 in my setup.

So, what about the DDR400MHz?

And, what is the difference between, HyperX and "standard" ram
beside de price?

I can have a 1x512MB Kingston DDR 400MHz for 150$ Can.
And the 1x512MB Kingston Hyper-X DDR 400MHz is like 230$ Can

I don't need to upgrade. My computer pawns your brian. :p

What am i upgrading? EVERYTHING.

I'm sure my P3 800 Mhz, GeForce GTS could use a break.

HyperX, TwinX, etc... are ultra low latency modules... faster performance and good for OC.

I've got 1gb of Corsair TwinX ddr400 and it scores really high in ram benchmarks, higher than most other ddr400 memory. So I'd recommend that, on a MB that supports dual channel memory it'd be worth it if you want OPTIMAL performance out of your machine.

You'd probably be fine with a cheaper brand / grade of ddr400 tho, if your on a budget.
