What I meant with the rest of that line is that he has been appearing as the Joker for many years and many fans consider him to be what the joker should be. Sure, Heath came along and gave an amazing performance in a film that tries to ground itself in reality as much as it can, Hamil is a joker from a Batman universe where the writers are not quite so concerned with this and so he can play the part very differently. He is a firm fan favourite so why not use him and his style of Joker for the game if he is a popular choice for the fans?

Both actors have given fantastic performances as versions of the Joker. They simply used the one that has done this many times and has a lot of fan support rather than get in a new actor trying to ape Ledgers performance who doesn't have Hamils experience with the character.
Also, the game was well into development and Hamil had already recorded his lines before TDK had even been released, so up till that point Hamil was the definitive Joker.

Obviously you would go with the generic fan pleasing joker rather than a joker with any depth or complexity. That's just good business.

I would prefer to think of it as them going with, at the time due to TDK not actually having been finished at that point, the strongest person to play it, which would be the long serving Hamill.
When the game was cast, nobody outside of the studio had even glimpsed ledgers Joker.

I can't comment on the animated versions Batman's depth due to not actually having watched that much of it, but I'm guessing a character that is so loved in that medium would have to be more than your cardboard cut out bad guy.

Hurm, are we arguing whether Hamil should've been the voice actor for Arkham Asylum? Okay, to clarify, when I hear the voice of the Joker in my head, it's Hamil's. I'm really not calling out his skill as an actor or his voice being the Joker voice. I'm really calling out the writing and style of the Joker in this game. Yes it is pretty similar to the cartoon. The cartoon was made for children. He is a fairly cardboard cut out basic villian. I love him, but he is. I don't think we should try to meet the expectations of a medium that went out a long time ago and didn't push Batman very far while it did, I think we should push the boundaries and see if we can't add some more depth to characters we've thought we've known all along.

My goodness that was a rant and I'm going to run away before people see flaws and contradictions in all of my arguments.
 
It depresses me that the voice I always associated with Joker is that of Cesar Romero :(

I'm sorry, I thought we were arguing about Hamils interpretation of the character, so yeah, sorry for the misunderstanding. I do think though that without seeing any other interpretation other than the animated one and Nicholson from Batman 89 the devs probably thought that using the same Joker character from the TAS and making him a little darker was the right way to go, as they knew no better at that time.

So I'm not saying your wrong, just at that time it was safer to stick with what everyone knew probably both fan wise and financially.

In essence I'm sort of, kind of, agreeing with you. :O

Mark Hamill doing the voice of the Joker in this game is JUST fine with me :) He's made a good career of it for the past decade and a half. Same goes for Kevin Conroy doing Batman.

The Return of the Joker is a better Joker story than The Dark Knight. I'll take "torturing Robin to the point where he starts acting like a young version of The Joker" over anything Joker did in TDK. Also, Hamill's performance in Return of the Joker was wonderful. He wasn't as good as Ledger's tour de force, but he was still damn good.

This game, though? It doesn't look like it has a good Joker story.
 
We'll be reviewing the PC version on The Reticule around the time the PC version is released. Shame that it isn't out til September :(
 
Well, i have spent a little time with the 360 version, not my platform of choice seeing as how I'm using it on an analogue TV, but it'll do until my my Collectors Edition arrives in the post.

I've spend a good solid 5 hours on it so far without breaking, and even with the shitty res it's running at and all the jaggies, the game still looks brilliant (for those who have not played past the demo, don't even think of saying this game doesn't look like Arkham should, the demo mission doesn't even play out in Arkham proper). With Batman obtaining more visible damage to him the further he gets and some brilliant level design, such as the section with
Scarecrow
which was amazingly atmospheric. There is also something to do as well as the main story too, such as searching for the Riddlers clues and solving his riddles.

The high score are deserved as far as I'm concerned.
 
It seems that alot of reviews are saying that its definitely a worthy winner of best comic/show/film adaptation.

And the fact that I havent seen a score below 9 so far just adds to the wanting.

I tend to wait for video reviews to come out, and for some reason I trust IGN over all the other sites, no idea why. To me theyre usually pretty accurate reviews when I buy a game based on the review ive watched.

And yeah the console versions always look worse anyway stemot. Whats the point in having 1080p/i when the only DVDs that use it are BluRay and HD and almost every game is in 720p. Surely the PS3 has the power to run at 1080p?

GTA4 was one of the worst looking games so far in terms of AA for example.

Yeah, but I couldn't wait for my PC version due to the high scores it's getting :).

I already know some people will hate the detective mode, which is really just a clever way of giving you a breadcrumb trail to your next objective. In other games this would simply be an arrow pointing to it, but the fact the devs took the time to work it into batmans gadgets and make it feel part of the world is something that should be praised.

EDIT:- New Nvidia drivers released to increase performance with B:AA and PhysX. I was sceptical at first, but using these I'm gaining up to 7fps at some sections.
 
I heard you get to find Ra'z Al Ghul (or however you spell his name) in AA. I'm hoping that confrontation will be cool, as he was one of my fav villians in the Batman cartoon, for some reason.
 
Id be very surprised if he makes a cameo appearance let alone plays a part in one of the sections of the game.

I can bet on some visual link to him by a poster or something, or maybe a line in an audio book or from another asylum member?
 
According to the ign review he is in the game somewhere. I'm betting he's just locked up in some chamber like a lazarus pit or something.

He is in it, kind of:-

He is part of a riddle, you end up finding a body in the morgue with the foot sticking out of a body bag with the tag bearing his name. I don't really think it's supposed to be him though, just something the Riddle cooked up for his riddle

So unless he appears later on as I haven't finished it yet, that's it.

Yeah, the 360 version I have.

It never explains, unless I have yet to find his audio tapes, it's just a Riddler riddle pops up on screen in that room, you look around the morgue slabs and find the body with the tag attached with his name on. You scan it and solve the riddle. Nothing else is mentioned.
 
Oh my god this was ****ing incredible played through it at a friend's house holy ****ing shit Scarecrow and Bane are unf and OH my GOD ragdolls.
 
Can anyone tell me how the final version compares to the demo in terms of performance? The demo ran very slow for me :/

If your talking PC version then that version isn't out until september 15th/18th, if your talking console, well, I haven't had any frame rate problems at all yet, seems a constant frame rate.

Anyone have a rough idea how long this takes to complete? Trying to decide if it's a rental or purchase.

Maybe a purchase then. It's a bank holiday weekend next week and i'm tempted to hole up with Batman and lots of junk food.
 
How do you guys have it already? It doesnt ship until the 25th in the US.
