Black history month

February as you all know is black history month. I dont know how to put this ...as a white man ( :dozey: not that that matters in any way ) I feel any group/race/ethnicity's struggle against oppression should be remembered so that we can prevent it from happening again (although the same-sex marriage issue still proves we've changed very little)..."the more you know" and all that.

Ok so that sounds sorta high and noble but to me black history also means great documentaries on PBS :E ..watched a good one a few weeks back called Unforgiveable Blackness by Ken Burns about Jack Johnson and his struggle to be recognised as the first black heavyweight boxing champion of the world

besides watching documentaries, I'll be going to some events around town (live music, kids stuff etc) and I'll probably hit the bookstore sometime this week. What do you have planned (if anything) to recognise black history month

For Black History Month I have bought tickets to a benefit at the theater... Supposed to be various broadway hit segments. It should be good.

Well it was a 3 part movie by MGM.

It was really like a doc tho...I dunno they didn't say it was, but it seemed like it.I didn't pay attention to the commercials talking about it.

They stopped airing so they can play their other shows***nning a 3 part movie takes up a lot of airtime...so yea...it was a good movie tho.

Yeah there is, its in september. In fact, theres a month for pretty much every concievable ethnicity other than white.

Er that's not the point of the month though, I thought the X History Months were to recognize great achievments made by people of that ethnicity in history. Inventions, contributions, art, etc.

I dont dishonor anything blacks have accomplished, but whats the point of having a month to honor them. Why not a month to recognize the civil rights movement instead. No not at all. For "them" as you say, theres a month to celebrate their heritage. Why cant whites have a month to celebrate their heritage? Seems like common sense. The problem comes with society denying whites to celebrate their heritage... because when they do, its 'racist'

I never said it was given to them. My point is that if a white history month was made by white people it would be racist, where a black history month founded by black people would not. Its a double standard in our society and it irritates me, its worse than affirmative action.

The same point of a black history month. Blacks come from all over a continent much larger, please dont pool black culture into one thing, it certainly is not.
