Black history month

The same point of a black history month. Blacks come from all over a continent much larger, please dont pool black culture into one thing, it certainly is not.

ah but they're celebrating black history in the US

Hey! What about an Indian History month! We gave those <Censored> they're peace-pipes, so thae beta rekognize fool, jah herd!!1

IKIDIKIDIKIDIKID

But seriously, why not have a month fundementally dedicated to Indians, or Hispanics?

I just think the prospect of a "x_history month here" is unfair without the rest of the melting pot. We should just turn Black History month into ... a Melting Pot history month or something of the like ...

But, I can see it all now. I'd go into work, and we'd have this:

Bob (Bobs just a supplementary name to my real name): Hey Keisha!
Keisha: ...
Keisha: WTF be wrongin up in yo peoples white ass government ...?!
Bob: ? ...
Bob <turns on TV> <NewsReporter guy tells me>: Los Angeles in Chaos. New York City in Chaos. St Louis in Chaos. Ladies and gentlemen, on the National announcement of a history month dedicated to all the races from within the United States, race riots broke loose. Most of the perpertrators being African-American males, and Hispanic Males.

Part of the reason why I'am against a month that only names one race as being important to American History and Culture, is because it does not share our contributions as a community, but as a singularity. Pretty soon, those who wont even recognize the sacrifices of the African American race (most of those black here in the south dont care about they're ancestry; DONT LIE TO MY FACE AND SAY, "OMFG NOES THAY DONT" ALL THE WAY FROM CANADA OR BRITAIN) will instead use the month as an enabler for them to act rash or stupid, therefore, giving they're own month a bad name.

But such one-sided focuses also cause ignorance alongside enlightement -- like I've said, either share our whole community with other communities, or dont share at all.

read the whole thread before jumping in, that question has been asked and answered

Jews were, and most Jews are white... We don't have our own month :\ ... we just eat Chinese food on Christian holidays.

Forgive me, but what does it mean that it's "black history month". That is is 60 years since the bombong in Dresen?

EDIT: Checked it up. I feel rather stupid not knowning that. :|

February as you all know is black history month. I dont know how to put this ...as a white man ( :dozey: not that that matters in any way ) I feel any group/race/ethnicity's struggle against oppression should be remembered so that we can prevent it from happening again (although the same-sex marriage issue still proves we've changed very little)..."the more you know" and all that.

Ok so that sounds sorta high and noble but to me black history also means great documentaries on PBS :E ..watched a good one a few weeks back called Unforgiveable Blackness by Ken Burns about Jack Johnson and his struggle to be recognised as the first black heavyweight boxing champion of the world

besides watching documentaries, I'll be going to some events around town (live music, kids stuff etc) and I'll probably hit the bookstore sometime this week. What do you have planned (if anything) to recognise black history month

To celebrate February I'll be sure to drink a 40 with my black friends  :E .

I don't think people should really be doing anything extremely special to celebrate black history month; however, I think it is important for everyone to remember what went on and what continues to happened, not just with race but with other issues as Stern pointed out.

And does Canada actually celebrate black history month?

yes we do, we celebrate black achievement in canada

The ancestors of the ethnicities that form up the 'white man' were enslaved, etc in ancient history, by rome.

Though... not for the color of their skin of course.

EDIT: No... no no wait. Yes, for the color of their skin! The colors on their skin rather. Barbarians, and all that.

Didn't know that. I really need to get a little more informed about our friends in the north (as long as I don't get my info from Fox as some on here seem to).

Yes, but I studied about the american cilvil right, the liberation, MLK etc. not long ago, so I should know that.

yeah let people celebrate thier history and heritage.

I'm Welsh, and the welsh have 'our' special day (not month) called St Davids Day. nothing exciting really.

so if black people have the month february dedicated to them, how cant the irish, christian, muslim, greek, french, german, white etc etc etc..... have a month dedicated to them... because we havnt got enough months. lol simple.

Where do you live Stern?

I've never heard of Black History Month being celebrated here. Not that it shouldn't be. I think we need MLK day too.

Why would you need MLK day? MLK fought for racial rights here in the states, as far as I know he no influance in Canada.

He fought for equality for man. No just black people and not just in the US. And obviously his main influence was in the US south, but his influence in Canada was on par of that in the US north.

He should be celebrated by every country on the planet.

What I don't get is why they get a whole month. I mean shit, they don't have all that much history! They get one twelth of a year to celebrate a couple hundred years of civilized history. And lets face it, when have you seen a black celebrate their history of running around in the bush with a stick in their hand strying to spear dinner? Their american history is what they celebrate, and it isn't that long. A couple days at best, but a month is rediculous. If they get a month, then white history should get atleast a year and a half. We have thousands of years of civilized history!

oops, did that sound racist?

This is one of the many reasons why this forum may end up being closed and us forcing everyone to go to a politics orientated website for discussions such as this. The bickering, racism, narrow-minded comments really are starting to annoy the staff here.

sorry I sort of set this thread to fail ...but I really didnt think people would spend 4 pages talking about everything BUT celebrating black history month ...from some of your responses in this thread ..I'm almost ashamed to be north american

Considering you put it in the politics forum, what did you expect? If you want some happy go lucky discussion about how wonderful blacks are maybe you should have put in General OT.

If you close this forum they win. This forum is the most interesting at the moment. Please don't remove it.

lol, I'm not racist, but I see how some of the more sensitives could have taken my post to be racist. I was just thinking an entire month is perhaps overkill.

What a much better way to phrase it rather than sterotyping all black ancestors as spear-chuckers.

how am I responsible for what other people write? ...you know this forum could be a great place to meet and exchange ideas ..instead it's a soapbox for the uninformed and a hotbed for personal vendettas

Would be pretty neat to see the politics forum get shut down. :D

no it wouldnt ...we have an opportunity here to show everyone that we can debate in a civil manner ..what other forum allows us to discuss anything under the sun? ...take this forum away and we've lost a part of the community

I don't know about "losing a part of the community"...I've been here about 2 years...and there wasn't a politics forum for about a year and a half.

So yea...we wouldn't really be losing anything..it would just be like the good ole' days. :D

yes but if they take away the politics forum dont you think they'll be a lot less lenient on political threads after the politics forum had to be shut down ..if that happens I see a zero-tolerance policy being enacted to keep it from happening in the OT forum

Yea true...but oh well. :p

I like to come in these forums to debate and learn new things, but if it was to get shut down and no more politics threads was allowed I wouldn't really care.

Please show me where I said you were responsible.

This from someone who, a majority of the time, only spews anti-US dogma.

Ok, but many people do care. If you don't like it simply don't come in here.

The simple fact is that debate is extremely important in our society. It is a great thing to be able to debate people that have similar interests as you (gaming). Sure, you can go to another community but other communities but then you lose that sense of debating with people you actually know.

There are a number of people that destroy this place; those are the people that should be punished, not the entire community.

only in response to patriotic rhetoric and vitriolic condemnation of yours truely as anti-american ..you yourself said as much ...but anyways must every topic revert to a discussion of my motivations?

I think it is safe to assume that you wish this place to be like Stern's fantasy, being a place for exchanging ideas, when every opposing idea is written off as Republican/Bush bullshit. Anyone else see anything wrong with that?

ya ok ...so how did you find HL2.net? have you ever played HL2 or did you come here at the request of one of your fellow soldiers? funny how so many of you new members claim to be military/police ...hmmm I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact most people here are critical of the US' role in iraq

But anti-US dogma is your theme, your content. Without it you wouldn't be stern, just an other poster.

You say you want the exchange of ideas but you entertain only the ideas correspondant to your own.

You said a comment about stern and I said a comment about you.
