Borderlands

Clunkiness of the interface, online shenanigans and other clear signs of a port aside, I have to say that this one hell of an enjoyable game. Together with a buddy of mine I leveled all the way up from level 1 to level 20 yesterday. Basically we did every quest and dogleg that the Arid Badlands have to offer, and scoured every nook and cranny of the map for loot and / or enemies. No rushing, but soaking up the atmosphere, trying out different tactics, exploring the white areas of the map, trying to fight badasses that were way above our level just for the fun of it, or concisely put: having a big ole good time. This game might have its imperfections and incomprehensible design decisions but overall it is a very fun experience. Can't wait to head to New Haven.

This is the first sandbox game ive actually managed to enjoy besides older standard non sandbox rpgs like diablo.

So what's the gameplay like in this, really? I've been put off by the mention of leveling your characters.

It is basically a shooter with an RPG mission structure and item setup. You get xp for killing stuff and doing quests. You get better weapons and items in terms of stats when you progress. The leveling goes natural, really. If you just stick to your quest, you won´t run into much trouble. As soon you start entering areas with higher level mobs, you´re in trouble.

Got to lvl 25 and its even more addicting but one big problem is i can't hand in quests in this one area. its the Arid Badlands and i have 2 quests to hand it. its like the easiest quests too and both say hand them in here, and it keeps pointing to the damn character edit pole and i want to rip my hair out because i waste so much time on quests and it wont let me hand them in properly. if this game wasn't glitchy as hell and actually playtested more i'd be a much happier camper

You go to the New-U pole, and click the rabbit in the top right. You can fast travel back to Arid Badlands.

You have to turn them in at the bounty board, it's right next to the character edit station.

I figured that, I looked high and low but if its right in front of my face I'll scream! sometimes games need a little more time in the oven for them to be right, I'm just hoping for 1 or 2 patches and thats it

patch 1 would make vehicles drive over almost anything

patch 2 would fix up the clunky interface by letting you either click or mouse scroll for quests and loot. also the item compare screen takes a bit getting used to

i can't think of any more right now

This must be my favourite gun so far, The Lightning Law:

And just a bit more xp and I can start using this one:

Just FYI, every single person has had their .ini's reset to default. So if you did anything special *Skip movies, toggle zoom, etc*, you gotta do it again.

well put
couldn't agree more

also, I need people who aren't retarded to play this game with!
so, if you're interested in a little non-rushing, friendly co-op at around level 28 (I'm even willing to start new characters) add me on Steam at:
[email protected]
you can also find me in the hl2.net group

Oh GBX devs, how you have a nice sense of humor.

Have they? Mine seem to be fine. Also why?

Damn, why did this happen? Now I've got to change all my video settings and disable startup videos again ;(

What system is that? I'm wondering if this game can play below a geforce 8 series...

Her system was kindly donated to her by her uncle, Top Secret. It is:

AMD Opteron 165 @ stock 1.8GHz
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe ( I think that's the mobo. It's Been forever since I put it all together )
2GB DDR-500
Using the Onboard AC'97 sound

I bought a new Sapphire 8500GT for $35 on eBay & so far, it's a kick-ass little card. She is able to play the game just fine with smooth game-play 99% of the time @ 1024x768 & all settings on High. Sadly all I had was an Old 5400 ATA-33 15GB HDD for her to use. Takes FOREVER to install anything, but once up & running, no problems.

I moved my movie files into a different folder so I should be good right??

My files are fine and I haven't done anything special. It was a daylight savings thing wasn't it? Daylight savings (Hate this crap setting clock an hour forward just pisses everyone off, farmers around my place raged hard) for my State started sometime before Borderlands came out so err yeah.

Game is awesome and addicting. Picked Mordecai and am focusing purely on pistols. I'm an unstoppable headshot machine, grawrrr

I'm glad Gearbox finally decided to do something entirely original, this is the first game since Opposing Force that really felt up to par with what they are capable of, in my opinion.

I think I spent seven hours playing this today. I did about two missions and then spent the rest of the time exploring. Somehow, I glitched to the other side of a drawbridge and ended up at Old Haven.

I'm playing as Brick, leveled up his Berserk power all the way, and have a level 3 shock artifact. When I go into berserk I'm unstoppable, even my friends who are higher levels have trouble fighting me. When shit goes down, I can lunge several feet into my enemies and electricity starts flying everywhere. So glad I chose him.

I haven't really been following this and videos didn't really pique my interest, but it seems to be doing quite positive and I'm looking forward to sinking some time into a fair few games when I get back home at Christmas, so this is worth getting I take it? I might pick it up in December as an impulse buy and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I was wondering wtf happened. The resolution and controls were also reset even though i didn't touch any .ini files.
Did they say why?

Affirmative.

Yeah, my .ini files were reset, too. It sucked because I had all sorts of tweaks set up.

I hope Gearbox actually fixes co-op and lives up to the legacy of support for these sorts of games established by Blizzard. I'd even be willing to throw in some cash if they added another zone, ten levels and some genuinely difficult runs with top tier lewtz.

At this point I've finally found an epic revolver and have the purple tier ammo upgrade, my survival is almost nothing but one or two pistol shots takes care of anything.

with that being said, i feel like I got my money when I got Borderlands. I'm at lvl 25 and don't feel like stopping and this game has really helped me ease the wait for COD. also they should make a PSP version (like what they did with Resistance: Retribution) so I can bring it to work and show everyone how awesome it is. I hate trying to explain how addicting it can be

And this is my problem. This kind of game CANNOT be addicting to me. I don't see how ANYONE can find this kind of thing addicting, same with WoW and all those other games.

There's something about 'addicting' games that just never does it for me. This is both a good and bad thing, as I can never devote my life to something, but I also have no chance of doing so too.

you don't feel the urge to keep playing?? to keep trading in loot to buy new loot?? or to keep doing just one more quest?? when i get in a good group online I don't want to leave, its fun. Haven't you ever sat down with a game for 12 hrs straight because you didn't want to stop?? Oblivion did this to me, Castlevania did this to me, and Halo 1 multiplayer did this to me.

I need some other kind of drive than 'to get more stuff'. A reason to keep playing, usually storyline based.

Borderlands had no story, or no good story I can back on.

In Mass Effect, or KoTOR I knew that as I went into whatever world I'd find a whole new adventure, people to meet and mysteries to resolve~

In this, it's 'go here and kill this' or 'go here, hit some switches. By the way there are bad guys'. And the full three NPC's there are are either horribly annoying or are boring. If it gets better later on, then that's stupid. The game should hook you from the start, and stay good- not just start to get good after you've played for 15 hours. I'm sure I would love WoW endgame, but I just can't get to that point.

I'm hoping Dragon Age will be good.

people are driven on by different things. Borderlands definitely wouldn't drive anyone based on story.

I love it, but lately I have NO urge to load it up. Probably because I have A LOT of quests in my journal and I don't want to do any of them...

I just finished it at lvl 36. Great game but what a disappointing boss fight and ending.
I spoke to Tanis and finished the last quest, but what now? Do i just start a new game with this character?

yeah, when you start it up again and go to single player it'll ask you what play through you want to use.

Before I bought Borderlands I had to come to terms that, no matter how badly I wanted story, I was not going to get it. This was a bit difficult, but I did.

So I went and bought Borderlands with the intention of having a mindless shoot and loot fest to play with friends after a day's work. That's what I got, and I was not disappointed.

I'm an hour or so in with a Berserker character and I can't wait to see how much more addictive this game gets. I'm already having a ****ing blast killing rats

There are no rats. You're most likely killing skags.

got the fast transit system up, new gun slot, and +5 back pk slots. this game is more fun than most anything else i have. sad part is i have uncharted, batman, dirt 2, operation flashpoint, and the new ratchet and this game is the most fun out of all of them for the time being.
