COD4 review

They say the single player campaign is short so I will pass on this game until the next gaming drought for me. I must make room for Crysis.

I played the demo and it was AWESOME!!! Im gettin this game and Cysis:)

Cool. Gametrailers.com gave it a 9.4 aswell I think. Not that I've ever put a whole lot of stock in them.

Still sounding like a hire rather than a buy. Multiplayer could give it some legs, but Halo 3 keeps me busy enough (plus TF2... soon, soon).

Well, nothing but good reviews from what i have seen.
I didn't expect any less from them. All of the cod titles offered great cinematic experiences and solid multiplayer components.
Having the ability to create your own classes definitely is a nice new fresh of breath.
This game offers a lot of customability which equals replayability.
I'll definitely get it.
Crysis is nothing more but a glorified graphics engine.

Is the game any different from the arcade shooter the demo was?

Yeah I'm picking this up today I imagine. Glad it's seeing good reviews. I'm actually glad for a shorter SP, as it doesn't look to be terribly different from past CoD's SP. Short but sweet, and the focus is right on the MP this time around anyway, which has always been good.

The multiplayer has me really excited. The previous games' multiplayer was too generic to keep me interested, but these perks and class system looks like it will give it the spice to keep me playing.

I will definitely rent this one, but I don't know about spending $60 on it, esp. since my 360 has been offline for a little while now.

I'll be buying it after a lengthy rent, the multiplayer looks amazing

Holy shit, that IGN review just made my hype-o-meter for this game go from 0 to 100!

The singleplayer looks short but oh so sweet.
And holy **** @ the multiplayer, it's everything I ever wanted for the CoD series or any modern combat games.
Wow... the different modes, customization, everything... just wow.

I'm totally throwing this on my Christmas list.

I'm installing now. As the resident CoD series junkie, I'll throw up my MP first impressions (only have an hour or so to play before I must go write an essay.

In exchange for someone writing up an analysis essay (only 6 paragraphs) on A Farewell to Arms, I will love you long time, worship the ground you stand on, incorporate you as a character that does NOT die in my NaNo, and write up a proper review of CoD4.

Edit: Judging by the installation pictures, the graphics are indeed outstanding...

I got it today and, from what I can tell, I've played through about 3/4 of the campaign on Regular. So far it's been a wonderful rush. The graphics are rather incredible, DX9 really shines on this baby. As the reviews have mentioned, there's actually a story this time, which is actually a pretty nice addition. It's not going to win any awards for originality, but it works rather well in the frame of the game.

There's really nothing revolutionary about this game, it's purely evolutionary as far as the Call of Duty series goes. That being said, it's fun as hell. Still, it's only taken me maybe 4 hours to get as far as I have in the game and I'll be finished soon. I've yet to give the multiplayer a go since I've been so engrossed in the singleplayer. I'll report back on that when I get to it.

So, if you enjoy Call of Duty or any other frenetic FPS, I highly suggest picking this one up.

Multiplayer was pretty nice. I mean, a lot of running about confusedly, but the maps are new.

The shotgun is much weaker than it was in CoD2, from what I can tell. I can't do much with it in any case. Sniping seems to be more difficult, but I have yet to find much in the way of good spots.

There are quite a few weapons, though how different they are remains to be seen. (Except for shotguns, I think there are 6 different guns for each type, making it... 32 including handguns? Not quite sure and I'm not in-game atm. Spraying randomly does not do seem to do you terribly well... perks are good, etc.

Last Stand was pissing me off. I'll have to develop a habit of putting a few extra bullets into people, because it's quite deadly.

Maps seem to have a good deal of variety. There is one set on a ship, while raining at night for instance, and a plethora of destroyed urban environs, while another is set atop a cluster of missile silos, that feels like a paintball site because of all the identical cover. Size varies, linearity (the ship is quite linear, of course) varies, etc. I played mostly HQ tonight, with a few rounds of the new gametype Sabotage, which was fun, but didn't play well without people knowing what was going on.

Create-a-class is quite nice, though it is annoying sometimes because you can't edit except at the end of a round or out of a server. I easily set up a high-accuracy set for longer range maps, a medium range set for medium range (using AK rather than M16, and a stronger pistol), shotgun for CQC and defense (with C4, last stand, and stopping power I believe), sniper for sniping once I unlocked a semi-auto sniper rifle, and the other is still unused because I haven't tried the SMGs yet.

One issue I have is that due to create-a-class, there is no distinction between sides. I assume this is what OldSchool or one of the other modes is for, though. I mean, SAS is the same as Spetsnaz is the same as USMC, etc.

The best indicator is of course, I can't wait to play it more.

If I could play online I would buy this game. I am not sold on the single player which has 0 AI and 0 replay value unless you have alzheimers.

Singleplayer is pretty solid. There are some very COD-like levels, but then there's the stealthing -> sniping mission, the AC-130 section and a couple others that really stand out to me above the previous COD games and most other shooters as well.

There have been some point where I just get plain annoyed from dying so much. I'm on Hardened difficulty and the missions I'm on now can be pretty frustrating at times.

I heard these on another board:

The "Death From Above" missions is creepier than just about anything I've ever done in a game.

Why is it creepy? :O

Just passed Shock and Awe. For those not there yet...After you're done with it, one of the greatest segments in war shooters, hell in all games. Seriously, I've never cared for the story in war games, but this game hits you with so much incredible shit... Sorry but HL2 has nothing on this.

Can anyone who has played the game say if this is true? I highly doubt it...

I hope Yahtzee will review Fallout 1 and prove to everyone the shitty game that it truly is!:p

I hope Yahtzee will review Psychonauts and prove to everyone the shitty game that it truly is!:p

Oh wait...

Why is it creepy? :O

Hmmm... can't remember which mission was Shock and Awe, but I know I played it. I wouldn't say that HL2 has nothing on this game. Not even close. COD4 is definitely better story-wise and character-wise, but it's no HL2. Still, it's leaps and bounds beyond COD2.

IIRC, Death from Above is the one in the AC-130. I would agree that is creepy as hell. If you want to know why, look in my spoiler tags below.

You're shooting people through a TV watching them in infrared. Not only does it completely take any human aspect out, but the pilot and co-pilot are chatting back and forth about all the killing you're doing and how there are only "pieces" left. So, yeah, I'd say it's rather creepy if only for putting you in a situation where war is a videogame within a videogame.

Icarus, heh, that reminds me of a video I saw from an Apache a few years back, I think it was an apache.

The gunner shooting people through a TV watching them in nightvision and the pilot and gunner are chatting back and forth about all the killing they're doing and how there are only "minced meat" left. You also see them shooting the soldiers whom have even given up, for example, there are people whom have thrown their weapons clearly and are just lsaying on the ground , or waving to the chopper, they shoot them to, and one of them LAUGHS, scary scary shit.

I think I saw that same video and it was very creepy to think that those were real people they were following into the fields and killing as they threw their weapons. There was also an airstrike video seen in night vision where they painted the target with some cool looking lasers then brought down some serious hell onto it. That war is nuts and thanks to the internet we get a better view than ever before...which is both good and bad.

By the end you can definitely see that IW has a much more pessimistic view of war than they have shown in previous games, a far cry from what CoD 1 was.

From what ive heard, the singleplayer is short, buts its top quality stuff. Kinda like Bioshock except half as long and more intense. Awesome story, awesome graphics, awesome gameplay, awesome everything.

Its like...5 star michelin cooking ; You get less than anywhere else, but youre getting oh so much more at the same time.

I want it! I want it all!

Seriously, this looks pretty cool, I bet it won't be long before there's a United Offensive type thing with vehicles in.

i havent spent t oo much time with it yet
but what ive seen so far has been great
the short singleplayer mode is really solid.. non stop action
and the progressive multiplayer mode is very rewarding and highly customizable
its just alot of fun
if you like shooters, then theres really no question you should check it out

I just played the demo. The game looks really nice, but the gameplay is a bit meh IMHO. Scripts, scripts, scripts - I was hoping for at least a slight change here. At one point I was shooting the bad guys with a picked up Dragunov, alongside with my buddies, wondering how much more of them there are left, when after about 5 minutes I realised I have to move on to trigger another objective/script. I don't like the idea of an infite number of enemies that will attack you until you do something.

I also don't like the fact that I'm doing all the additional stuff - Jackson do this, Jackson do that, oh Jackson you're so special, you can take on any role.

Also - I had the ragdolls supposedly turned on, but I saw death animations instead?

Am I the only one who is having serious issues with multiplayer? The times that I am actually able to retrieve a list from the master server, the pings are inexplicably high (250+) and I can't connect to any server because I either time out or my ping is too high for the server. I really hope this is a problem with the game and not my university network because I was really looking forward to the multiplayer.
