Company of Heroes = the best game ever?

Is the campaign any good? I profess that the extent of my experience with it was the singleplayer beta, but I haven't played more than an hour of an RTS campaign since Starcraft.

I absolutely love love love playing with people I know through Halflife2.net and the like, so by all means... let's get our game on.

Well, the campaign is innovative in that it's cinematic rather than "build a base and destroy the other base" style. But, being a WW2 game, it doesn't have an interesting story as Starcraft does - so it's just not that much fun.

Let's play again later.

I'd love to, but I can't probably today or tomorrow. Work all day today, school and work tomorrow, a 3 page Psychology papers, and 2 four page English papers.

I fail to see why people are calling this the BEST RTS in history. There are blatent obvious betters out there....even if their graphix are lacking these days..that should not hold the utter solid gameplay/balance..

Damn. Thanks for reminding me why I left edumucation...

like what? this game beats WC3 as far as I'm concerned, and every C&C game that I've ever played. I do not think that it's better than Starcraft, but it's close. It's more refined than Dawn of War, better (in my opinion) than the AOE or RON series... I think calling it the best RTS in history is a tad exaggeratory but only a little. It's definitely up there.

Meh, it's not your game.

Ennui, the campaign is well done. It's not like a scrimmage each time; there's goals, objectives, etc. It's really nice to play when you don't feel like messing with noobs online.

I've only gotten past the fourth mission so far, but I'm really liking it. repiV's right about the cinematic quality of it - they even managed to make the standard "defend your base for 20 minutes" mission fun by giving the whole thing a palpable sense of dread (and lots of pretty explosions).

And there's the fact that... erm... I've never owned a WW2 game before... so the story, or rather, the presentation of the story is really interesting.

man if this is your first WW2 game you're totally spoiled for the others

my first WWII game was Close Combat, and I've played about every decent one since

I admit, C&C doesn't beat it, netiher does dawn of war, but you forget Total Annihilation. Man, that game was mad fun, you can't say it wasn't...

And at least you understand StarCraft is over it even though a little...

lol starcraft is my favorite game of all time and i'll be damned if any game is ever going to best it

I just played the demo off a PCGamer disc and I am amazed.

It's an RTS, that isn't boring D:

what gives you that idea?

it was released here and in the UK simultaneously

It's my favourite RTS ever and my GOTY of 2006. Like Ennui I almost exclusively play online (username is, of course, Shakermaker). I'm lvl 5 Allies and lvl 4 Axis, tho I don't play that much ranked. Right now I have about 100 wins and 45 losses. Favourite maps are Lorraine and Montherme.

EDIT Best site for CoH; replays, strats, FAQs, etc. (not a referral link ;))

Add me Ennui: Viperidae.

The beautiful thing about this game is the number of ways to approach a problem. Revip was mentioning MG42's: Assuming there were no Pak's/panzers nearby, a single Greyhound could have provided cover for your men. Alternatively, you could have dropped airborne behind the bunker. A 57mm AT could have taken it out as well. Or you could have rushed a halftrack filled with guys.

or you could bring up your six calliopes and do a combined missile barrage :D

i remember playing with outpost ( i think it was anyway ) and he had four or five calliopes. that looked cool.

Personally, I'm an Axis fan, and I've been at the other end of many a Calliope spam. They should cost some damn fuel, not just manpower (the Calliopes).

PM me if you guys ever want to play.

0mar (with a zero, not an O) anytime pretty much.

Gonna get me a copy later ;)

How does the online play work? Does you have to create a game yourself or are their 2 player servers?

Don't have the 9 gigs required to install the demo, so I won't be playing it... :(

I'm pretty sure the demo didn't take anywhere near 9 gigs. More like 2 or something. I can't remember.

The actual game is only 3.8 GB, so it's not that big.

I quite like this game, though I'm really bad at it. I'm very good at taking points but rubbish at holding them, so my mid game tends to go very badly. The campagin is fairly amusing and I'll definetly be getting any expansion packs when they come out.

it one of ma fav game too. good visuals and gameplay mechanics.

I prefer DoW, but it's still a cracking RTS game

my problem is mostly that i'm too slow in the beginning of the game

My new account name is IntegrateThis. I won't be playing online for awhile, but when I do, I'd definitely like to play with you guys.

By the way, I'm a little embarassed to ask, but how do you add friends to your friends list? I can't find anywhere to just type them in.

It's actually rather complicated. You either have to find them in a chat room/game and right click on their name (add friend along with some other options then) or use the Leaderboard to find their name and do it. But they would only be on the leaderboard if they've played and won some matches I believe.

Just absolutely dominated some poor soul in 1v1. I was allies on Angoville. He started off okay, took out a riflemen squad with a mobile mg and held some high point nodes on the east end, a fuel and a munitions. But I flanked his mg with a jeep, brought in more riflemen to fight off his volkgrenadiers and pioneers, and all the while was totally dominating (with no resistance after the first pioneer) the rest of the map. He seemed to give up or just not know what to do after I won the early game fighting and bottled up in his base... Eventually he pushed out with two fully loaded grenadier squads and a halftrack. He took over the south end (which should have been his the entire game) until a paradropped AT gun and greyhound with gunner finished him off :). Spent the rest of the game playing around trying to destroy his base with just paratroopers and a few greyhound barrages.

I never even built a weapons support center, if you win early game with rifles and jeeps it just isn't necessary, though mortars to destroy some buildings garrisoned by MGs would've been nice (he fortified his one VP that he held for a few minutes with two garrisoned buildings. I took it out with a greyhound.

The key to winning as allies is definently hit-and-run, denial of resources unless you can just straight up dominate the opponent. You just can't do much bottled in your base with only one, maybe two fuel nodes.

You fellows are all wrong, it only took up like 1.8 gigs on your drive, but during the installation you needed 8 or 9 gigs free on that hard-drive. Something to do with a lot of compression or something.

You can type /addfriend name in the chat. /help gives you all the commands and info on them.

CoH just showed up on our shelves at work, but I've never heard of it so it must not be that good.

Do you build a base then? Or just have units to control?

Haha. Either your kidding or you've been hiding under a rock.
