Dark Messiah of Might and Magic SP DEMO on Aug. 8!!!

that game bored my imo, but it is kind of close the the elder scrolls series.

Since this is a hybrid FPS/RPG... I wonder if it'll have giant rats like every other rpg?

Is it just me , or the textures in the game are low? I don't know , the game didn't look too impressive to me and it ran quite poorly. I'll see what i can get by adjusting the gfx (had it all maxed at the first try).

Nope, i'd have to say that the textures are pretty nice. Were you using high levels of AF ? Because without AF even the highest quality textures can look a little muddy.

I played it briefly last night (mainly because the 1.4gb sapped most of the time i would of had to play it in. So far i have only been involved in a few training stylee fights, but so far i must say the fighting is meaty and well animated. The graphics are beautiful, they create a great atmosphere. I especially like the use of lighting in this game, torches, illuminated inscriptions, etc etc. I found the game to run quite well personally, although i'd say that the fps are significantly decreased from older source games such as hl2 (no surprise there). I found i was getting between 45-80 fps during the indoor tutorial at 1600 x 1200, all settings high, 2 x aa, 8 x af.

It is a shame that it being a source game it only has the same graphical options as other source games, as it would be nice to be able to optimise the settings a bit further to eke out a few more fps without compromising visual quality too much. e.g. i find changing shadow quality setting to low pretty much removes a great deal of the atmosphere in a game like this, and i think a medium level of detail might be welcome. But that may just be me.

Ok, I said I would post the video I made, so here it is. I listed in the description the performance I got and my specs, so if anyone wants to compare.

ace ! thank you.. nice music (names?) too, hah. :)

it looks pretty good, i hope there's a gothic 3 and the witcher demo soon.

great year for single player rpgs; oblivion, dark messiah, gothic 3, the witcher and nwn.. as long as none get delayed. :)

Great graphics (design, technical, etc.), very fun gameplay that I've played through multiple times finding new tricks and traps (and I spent five minutes kicking a goblin head around before knocking it off a cliff...and plummeting to me death following it), and a seemingly intresting story.

The problems are, limited imersion with all the UI and first person talking and it did not run well. It was unplayable on the settings I used for HL2:EP1 (maxed all but no AA) and I could not even run it on the recommended levels for some reason (I had to drop textures to medium). I assume they still have alot of optimization to do.

I might buy it (and I rarely get new games).

I have the exact same problems. I set everything up as my HL2 settings and the second i ran onto the cliff edge, everytime i look AT the building on the wall it goes juttery. Look slightly to the left and its perfectly smooth (on max settings). Im having to go medium settings..which is weird for Source.

Fecking cool game though. The fights are simply AMAZING. So many possible options, just to kill ONE guy. Do i shoot him? Stab him? Kick him off the edge? Kick him into the spikes? Kick him in between pillars so when i slice this rope he'll get hit by the swinging object? Do i make the floor icey so he slides INTO my sword, or away from me onto the spikes?

Im just replaying the level over and over trying different things each time. Roll on the release date :D

Re-played it at lower settings , the game still is very choppy , the performance is terrible. They need to work on the optimization. Other than that , the game is good.

Spawning NPCS:

SomeGuest from Facepunch forums said:
Create a file called myconfig.cfg in your mm/cfg folder.
Add this to that cfg file.

bind "F1" "mm_npc_create_orc_sword_shield"
bind "F2" "mm_npc_create_goblin"
bind "F3" "exec myconfig.cfg"
bind "F4" "god"
g_ragdoll_maxcount 200
sv_Cheats 1

Then add +exec myconfig.cfg to your M&M shortcut parameters.

Whenever you make changes to your config ingame just hit F3 to reload it.

Enjoy watching the orcs and goblins beat the hell out of each other...or maybe you beating the hell out of the orcs and goblins.

How do you get to the developer console in Dark Messiah? [~] doesn't work :(

3 Ghz , 1 GB , X800 XL.

It should run alot better. Had no serious problems with Ep1.

Very good but it has bugs. Like getting stuck between walls and such having to reload the whole game. Also it has FPS drops, as soon as some enemy turns into a ragdoll the game stops for about 2 minutes just looping the sound. I had no problems with other source engine based games so i wonder why this game is such a problem. I would buy it but i wont because i seriously dont wanna waste my time waiting 2 minutes after each kill.... :/

Hmm, i didn't find any pauses etc when bodies turned into ragdolls. It does seem to be slightly more intensive on the system than hl2 and episode one though, but compared to other recent releases i would say that it doesn't run badly at all.

Doesn't work? :(

Did you make sure you saved it as a "*.cfg" file. If you're using notepad go to save as, then instead of .txt file put "all files". Then save the file as myconfig.cfg ...... the game won't recognize the config file unless it's saved as a .cfg , it won't work if its a just a text file

and make sure your parameters for the launch .exe are something like this (right click go to properties and see whats in the "target" box)

My parameters:
"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Demo\mm.exe" +exec myconfig.cfg

It looked great for me mostly on high settings, did lag a bit in big environments such as the cliffs in chapter one or whatever, but it's probably cause my computer parts are going on three years old.

Lol got it working, thats funny stuff. Also you can bind F5 or something to noclip to go and fight that troll.

I got the NPC spawning to work! :D Anyothers like that? Increase Statpoints and unlock the "Demo" skills? :p

AMD64 3800, 1gb, 6600 - Runs all on highest, 4xAA, 16xAtistrophic or whatever it is and HDR. 1024x768.

I managed to backstab someone without sneaking up on them, i kicked knocked them down, then when he was getting back up, i got behind him, and backstabbed him.

I don't know what happening with the performance , I'm leaning towards that the problem is at the developers' end rather than my system. First Call of Juarez and now this game. Optimization is needed , fast.

I have similar specifications and am getting the same performance as you. The game doesn't scale well at all; turning things down to medium or low only gives a small performance increase, somewhere in the range of 2-4 frames per second.

This only means graphics isn't your bottleneck. What do you mean by similar specs?

The game has caught my interest. I'm d/l the demo.

Hey Zeus, thanks for spawning tips. More enemies = more fun! Have you figured out how to spawn the guys from the first, prologue map? :)

I also want to say something about performance. It was pretty disappointing - when I run the game on high settings on my 6600GT, it worked for a while with terrible fps and then crashed the whole computer. I had to downsize the texture quality and turn off HDR, now it works better, but still physics slow it down and when you're entering this so-called "vistas", the fps drops down to almost 10 fps. It's stated at the beginning that this demo doesn't represent the quality of final version - and I really hope they'll optimize it a bit.

Some more for the .cfg:

bind "F1" "mm_npc_create_goblin"
bind "F2" "mm_npc_create_orc_sword"
bind "F3" "mm_npc_create_orc_sword_shield"
bind "F4" "mm_npc_create_orc_sword_bow"
bind "F5" "mm_npc_create_necro_guard"
bind "F7" "mm_npc_create_necro_guard_shield"
bind "F8" "mm_npc_create_necro_guard_bow"
bind "F10" "mm_npc_create_human_guard"
bind "F11" "mm_npc_create_human_guard_bow"
bind "F12" "mm_npc_create_undead"
bind "\" "exec myconfig.cfg" //Manually Reload this .cfg File
bind "]" "god" //You are a GOD and can not die!
bind "[" "mm_player_add_skillpoints 1" //Gives you 1 Skill Point
g_ragdoll_maxcount 100 //You will only see 100 ragdoll entities at a time.
sv_Cheats 1 //Allows you to ... CHEAT
mm_dynamic_difficulty 1 //Makes the AI a bit more Dynamic, not sure if this works.
arrow_always_stick 1 //Does exactly what it says!
arrow_stick_on_npc 1 //Does exactly what it says!

There's lots of cool stuff the facepunch guys figured out. My config is:

bind "F1" "exec myconfig.cfg"
bind "F2" "mm_npc_create_goblin"
bind "F3" "mm_npc_create_orc_sword_shield"
bind "F4" "mm_npc_create_necro_guard_shield"
bind "F5" "mm_npc_create_undead"
bind "F7" "mm_player_add_skillpoints 28"
bind "F8" "mm_player_add_adrenaline 50"
bind "F10" "noclip"
bind "F11" "god"
bind "F12" "impulse 101"
sv_Cheats 1

Spawns for guards and zombies as well as orcs and goblins, enough skill points for everything in the demo, instant adrenaline, and basic cheats (impulse 101 has the same effect as a health potion). Does anyone know a cheat for restoring mana?

I did the ice spell in front of the goblin at the start, and then smashed him when he was on the floor. Cool, I thought, I cut him in half. I lifted up one 'half' of him and found out that actually....

You cloned that poor goblins torso. :|

@PvtRyan & ElFuhrer, thanks alot, very cool! 8)

Tried downloading it 6 times from several different places. It downloaded fully only once, but the .exe was corrupt so it wouldn't work. Tried downloading it again and getting less than 1KB/S so **** it. Guess I'm not supposed to play it.

geeze... I was expecting it to be really long after such a huge file size... but whatever, thats cool I guess. It was pretty fun. I dont know what theese other guys are talking about, no it didnt run as well as hl2 episode 2, but it looked really REALLY good. You might want to turn of hdr. Honestly it kinda annoys me anyway... but yeah, if you do the performance is like 10 x better, and it still looks really really good. Yeah you can usually just kick them into some spikes or something... but whats the fun in that? What's fun is dueling with them, with just that sword.

This demo runs in a playable range anywhere from 25 to 40; with everything maxed out on my system. Only time it really went down was in that vista in the huge cave thing, and it was anywhere from 25 to 30 looking out into the vista.
AMD 3800+ X2 6600GT oc'd 1.5 gigs of kingston ddr400

Wow. After replaying it, I've come to the conclusion that the daggers are the coolest things I've EVER seen.

Runs great for me... everything except textures(high :D) on medium.

Didn't get that far, just up to the first orc... I'll finish playing on Friday.

Aye, they look great. But the fighting style isn't that polished atm, with daggers the best way to take something down is just to stab it in the face by mashing MB1, pointless to use special attacks.

The fighting is weird, when I fought the goblin I fell off the cliff my first 2 tries. D:

I tried playing with everything set on High, including 6xAA, 16xAF, and it ran fairly slowly. It was definitely playable, but only to get screenies to show off. I will have to lower the settings and see if I can't get great performance out of it then. Lost Coast ran great, as does every other Source-based game, so this is a little disappointing (for now).

(I am running a P4 3.6GHz with 1GB RAM and a Radeon X850XT PE).

The game hasn't been fully optimized yet, so there is still hope
