Degeneration of HalfLife2.Net

Dammit, I really should read up on that damn zombie thread :|. I've been neglecting HL2.net for some time now because I was working for school, making tutorials for Empires and doing some other shens. Give HL2.net a few months and the spam should subside / generalize methinks

Jesus Christ. I was trying to figure out why Pesh had been banned(which I still haven't figured out), and then I come across in the search that thread about Budd Dwyer killing himself. Man... I saw that video from a link on wikipedia once, and the damn thing traumatized me seriously. Can't believe that shit was posted on these forums.

That's an all time HL2.net low. You don't go posting video of people murdering themselves or others.

Also - you know what makes the forums suck? The members, not the moderators.

Oh and uh... as a moderator you are a member. You can make the forum suck too. You even have more potential to, since you also carry the burden of authority.

I've only been here two years, but there's definitely a cycle. Once the hype for Episode 2 dies down, only the dedicated noobs will remain, those who actually have something to contribute to the forums.

Darkside gon' tell you what the problem is. Problem's newfags. Newfags coming up in here with their shit, spreading their cancer 'round like butter on toast. Back in the day we used to be tight, HL2! Used to have our own injokes, our own original content, but now we just rehash stuff from the past or steal humor from other websites. What happened to those days? We don't even know who we are anymore, HL2.net; we're disjointed and disconnected. I mean, look at the threads we've been having! THE THREADS LATELY HAVE BEEN SHIT, ABSOLUTE SHIT. I'll go up into Off Topic right now, son, and all I'll see is shit. Shit shit shit. But back in the day we used to have good threads; ALL our threads were gold, and the threads that weren't gold went away because either the mods dealt with them or people would ignore them instead of post in 'em like newfags.

Hmmm.

Pi ended this thread early on. Its very true that the forum changes over time. We have members quitting every day because its not like the "old days" where everything was awesome, where rainbows spawned from every thread, where every post was important and meaningful and blah blah blah.

But thats not the whole story. Its not that the forum is changing so much that its getting shittier. The change is very gradual, and probably much slower than anyone realizes. What is a more likely explanation is that people just get sick of it. Its not that the new posts are shittier, not that the members are stupider, its just that people tire of it. How many members have left because "the forum has gone to shit"? How many have come back after a period of time away? A lot. The forum is no different than when they left, they just took a break from it and when they came back, it was "new" again.

Another thing to take a look at is how we have many new members. I dont remember a point where we have had this much activity (barring hl2 releases) on a every day basis. Several new threads are started each day, and they swell up with posts quickly. Not all of them can be gold. Think back to the "golden days." How many threads were started each day back then? Not nearly as many as today. There are just as many awesome threads today as there were during any period of hl2.net. The difference is that we have a lot more people, with other interests and other ideas of fun now. So all that we need to do is learn how to get along. Dont like useless polls? Ignore them, and let others have their fun. Dont like heated debates about religion or *insert subject here*? Ignore them, and let others enjoy their debate. Dont like joke threads? Ignore them, and let others have their fun, infractions and thread closures.

I remember the thread Darkside made awhile ago about how mods close threads when people are having fun with them. Well nothing is different today. The only reason why any thread should be closed is if it is breaking the rules. In all other circumstances, members who want to participate and enjoy certain types of threads should be allowed to. We can have both worlds here, we just need to chill out and let others enjoy themselves, even if we dont approve of it, because if nobody likes a thread, it will be ignored. Otherwise, then obviously someone likes it.

One thing i do think needs to change, is something moderators can help with. A lot of threads can go off-topic quickly around here, and while its funny for many people, the people who liked the initial discussion will feel kicked out. I think thats one of the main reasons why we have such tension here. We have a lot of like-minded people here who can overwhelm threads with their separate discussion, and that pisses off people who wanted the original discussion.

Well, thats my 2billion cents on the subject. Can i have danimals job now?

Forum needs less rape jokes and use of the term in general, and ''moar'' and other such zainy words to be cast out, too.

I don't see anything wrong with this forum

the HL2 section is fine and informative

the off-topic section is full of spam and pointless discussion, just like off-topic sections always are. it's fine. that's why it exists.

edit: but yeah I agree, dumb memes and internet expressions aren't funny, they're just annoying

Personally I feel the same about 4chan threads, I'm more than happy to put a stop to them as long as you guys help by a) not posting them, b) giving us a report or shout. Probably about time we got a few more mods in, that's Pi's recruitment department though so likely candidates will need to be strong and pass the most demanding of tests...*shivers*

I still haven't visited 4chan, so I don't post in those topics, but I try to make many posts to previews of new, good looking games in the games/gaming section.

perhaps we need a word game area, for things like The OWNED Game, the ^ < V game, the Three Word Story game, the Word Association game etc...

What kind of pointless poll is that? I mean, it's not like Bowsniper hasn't already made a few hundred pointless polls. I've made a few as well,

I figured someone would bring one of those threads up. I did specifically say that I have made such threads, but I really wanted to know what had been going on.. I suppose it could have been a bit more formal, I was trying to get it out quickly. Also, I never found out what it was. :|

You know what I've noticed? Is that the general membership of the off-topic forums makes way less interesting threads and the community, as a whole, seems a lot less united than several months back.

I guess it is due to the fluctuating nature of members that come and go. But it's a hell of a lot more boring than it was back then.

Don't worry, I still love you, BS.

If we remove rape from this forum, all is lost.

They move things along in an unnecessary way.

If one says tentacle, there can be a slew of rape jokes in the games:D

and lol thanks Ace, I read your post as I still love you, bullsh*t(my mind sees BS as that term)
love ya too,cheers:cheers:

Heh, I actually thought of that too. Decided to just post it with that, since I knew someone would get it. :p

This thread really is just getting steam off. You're all right blah blah blah, it's no big deal.

Have to blow off steam every once in a while.

Some more moderators would be nice.

Oh and since we're here, and I can't post in locked threads, I'd like to respond to Pi from the Hot Girls thread:

There's plenty of nudity in that thread, which is not allowed, in spoiler tags. I've never heard of putting nudity in spoiler tags being allowed. I always thought, (and I know this sounds crazy) that spoiler tags were used for spoilers. Also, not everything boils down to whether or not it breaks a rule in some solid set of rules (which does not exist here, or at least isn't viewable by normal members) and you should know that. This is part of the job of moderators, to make educated decisions. The 'rules' don't say anything about having a flat out fapfest thread, but that doesn't meant it belongs on hl2.net.

And as for your second point, I never said or made it seem like I was saying that I was speaking on other people's behalf. Just because I'm the only one who complained doesn't mean other people didn't find it a bit too far for hl2.net. Some people don't like complaining. It has its cons. I, however, hold it to heart to speak my mind as a 4-years member of this forum, because sometimes nobody else will. I'm not going to just sit there and wait for it to get worse and worse. Notice I keep mentioning my membership length... it damn well means something. Spending 4 years in a room and you'll learn to just know its dimensions. I have what I feel to be a good sense of what the limits of hl2.net are. I know for a fact threads like that were closed in the past. They barely even got started before they were closed. This is why I was so suprised to see this one last so long.

Anyway, I'm just ranting again, but I feel I had to respond to you there.

I prefer quality over quantity. I'll be taking some on in the near future.

Oh it's that time again! I'll be the one to have had enough of it and leaving. I just cba to make a goodbye thread.

Actually though, it's cause I got a fulltime job now. 3 hours of free time per day sucks hard. I just don't find it worth spending my precious time here anymore. Perhaps in weekends I'll drop by from time to time. I'm actually here now only cause I accidentally clicked on the forums and logged in automatically.

BRICK!!!

BRIIIICK!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

;( so long...

Good luck on your new job Brick! :D

Really, be happy for him. As long as it's a good job and he doesn't forget hl2.net

You've been here 4 months and make spammy threads like this - http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=138336
You typify this entire thread, yet take the higher ground as if you're not responsible, incredible!

Pi is scoutin'...something we never usually know about D:

That was one thread, though. The other two have been super serial.

I typify this entire thread? Right off the bat - I can think of many members who don't contribute anything but wasted space on this forum.

You're a man with a female name. Your argument is invalid.

GL with the job brick, dont kill yourself over it.

It's tough work. I help build these types of doors and those tarps over trailers. It's not great but I'll have this job till the summer at most, after which I'll go to school again. I might get active here again after that, I don't know. At least I'll still be in the steamchat regularly. And it's not like you'll be missing me. I haven't been here in weeks and nobody noticed. And the people that would miss me are the ones I already talk to over msn or xfire.

Not reading any posts, all I want to say is I took a hefty months long break from the site, when I "came back" it still felt like the same place.

The site isn't changing, the members have not mutated into different people, you are just noticing things you have not noticed before or have become weary of it or sensitive.

Just go take a break.

I think that what happened, was most of the old timers got freaking lives.

I remember back when HL2.net used to be "tighter", that was back when i'd come straight home every single day after school, hop onto Xfire, and expect 8 different people bombarding me with "COME BF2 WITH US SINKO!"

But now, I actually leave my house in my spare time.

Notice how ALOT more people these days post about their drug related experiences, their times on the town whilst wasted, about their girl problems, about how hard they party. That never used to be, and I assume it's because they've done the same. Grown up and moved on with their lives.

So now there's a new tightnit group that me and some of you folks aren't included into. New people that we don't really game with as often, because we don't spend our time sitting infront of our squeezboxes nearly as much.

I mean, seriously, i've been here 4 years. I don't mean to toot my own horn, but that is a ALOT of time for somebody to grow up, especially considering that 4 years go I was 12. I basically went through puberty on HL2.net.

AND, i've noticed that a good portion of the old HL2.net "crew" is generally AROUND my age. Hell, even the older one's seem to have moved on with their lives. Mr. Redundant got married, Zerimski just got bored with the forums, Amishslayer got a life, Cyberpitz is a lot more low key now.

People ****ing change with that sort of time, and some of you folks have been here even longer than I have.

Like the mods said, it's not that the "forum's" have changed. Hell, the forums ****ing change every few months when a new version of Vbulletin is released, and nobody complains. It's the people that have grown and changed.

"the good old boys" basically grew up and left the nest.

That's at least the way I see it.

Really, this whole thread reminds me of an old guy yelling at a crop of kids cruising around his neighborhood about how back in his days none of that hip hop or rock and roll shit was tolerated, and how "back in the day" people were gentlemen.

OP and Vegenumbers, you are the old guy.

"Why, I would have to hike 40 miles in the snow just to get a carton of milk and a piece of bread..."

Bricky! I noticed you not being here you big cuddly D: face!

And sinko, yeah I get what you mean about everyone growing up. I've been here since 04-06-2004, so that's almost 4 years now which would make me 14.
Eventually the newer members ill take our place as regulars. Some of us will end up like Stern, with countless posts and an overlord-style personality. Hey, some of us may become mods.
Personally I don't see myself leaving any time soon. I've put too much time into these forums, and they've given me so much back. I don't really subscribe to any other forums because this is my one stop for news and hl2 related stuff. It's great.

I personally hope no one leaves. Ever.

Oh, bye Brick. Hope to still catch ye around.

Hmm... some thoughtful discussion. Again. It kind've reminds me of the US regression and the fears of global warming. Episode Two has just come out (yeah, technically it has, even though it's been around for a few months now, most people will have gotten it for Christmas. I'm personally giving it to my friend as a birthday gift (tomorrow, for last Monday :p). I've noticed there have been alot more newbies around than normal, and it's frustrating. I just grit my teeth and shout at them.

About people leaving, people will inevitably leave. Some people might come back (like myself), and new people will come. Crappy people will disappear in their infractions, and trolls will disappear with their bans. I think the mods are doing a fine job. The offending threads have been closed, and I'd like to thank Sulkdodds for some of that :p.

Forums haven't changed a bit since I joined more than four years ago. The members sure have.

I have no problem with being a less lenient moderator. I try to be nice because I like most of the forum members, so I cut those ones slack, and then so as not to be unfair I cut the douchebags slack too.

Like Pi said, be careful what you wish for... if you want strict interpretation and penalizing of the rules than you can have it, but half of you are gonna be banned in about a week if we do that.

More strictness isn't what we need. People just need to think before they post which is becoming more and more rare these days.

Yeah, I agree. Becides the last thing we need is halflife2.net to turn into facepunch, agreed?

Also as Qonfy said, people should think before they post. I always do, and I try to behave as much as possible and be a good member.

The members who have contributed the best to this thread is Darkside and Kryn. I think Sinkoman nailed another point down that is completely related but not thought of. Half-Life was a game that was released in 1998. It has been 9 years since then. As in almost a decade. Since then people on this forum made threads about:
  1. Getting married.
  2. Gone to war.
  3. Graduated school or even college.
  4. Had kids even.
In 1998 I was just 11 years old. When I discovered it though I was just 13 years old back in 2001. In fact in 1998 I was playing Pokemon. Now I'm going to graduate with an Associate in Welding this Spring. I'm even turning 21 years old this September. I mean I found a career, I wanna move out to an area that supports my trade, and find a girl who I loves me. I think overall, we will not get over this hump this time. The forum was built upon kids by kids and evolved over time as we grew older. Like Sinkoman said, our teen years in part was spent on this forum. Now the kids have lives and have moved on. One of us might even work for Valve. I remember almost sending hl2.net spies into Valve for new info on HL2. That's where the first viral site came from after somebody took a pic of a whiteboard. Now WE are the people that ourselves envied. I have been about this forum in 2003, lurking though. Nobody would ever feel sad if I left though. I already have basically a few months ago.

I've thought the forums have been great recently. :) I don't post nearly as much as I used to and mainly just come for the general gaming board and the news posts, but going over to off-topic to read has been pretty hilarious recently with people like Darkside, Stigmata, Vegeta, etc. posting there! I stay away from overly serious threads, though. :p Wait, uh... this one was an accident. Yeah...
