Hey, I'm about to go out and buy a MiniDV digital camcorder. I'm leaning toward a Sony DCR-HC30 right now. I'm wondering what software is the best for editing the videos with.

At Best Buy, they told me about needing a firewire connection and Pinnacle software for editing. They said that a USB connection would be too slow to transfer movies, and that Pinnacle was the best software.

Are there any other cheaper and useful editing software programs? And also, is a USB connection indeed too slow? (I don't have a firewire port, so I can't plug a firewire connection into my computer).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you will need a firewire port.

What about Pinnacle? Is that the best bet for an editing program?

Adobe Premiare gets results, the best out there...

expencive though...

Pinnalce is definetly easy to use, and the lastest version is pretty cheap, they say pinnacle becuase its probably the only one they have in stock athat has the same power, but don't always listen to people at a store liek that x-X

If it's Pinnacle Edition you're after, beware. It's a strangely coded program and has a lot of odd flakey behaviours. It's laid out nicely enough though, and if you can get past the odd behaviour it works well.

Edition kicks butt. :p

The PR dept. here also likes Vegas Video.

However, which program is "best" is largely subjective. Try the demos of several. Find the one that works best for your work style.
