Doctor Who: Season 4

Just seen the new episode, quite good :)

Currently I think the 2nd episode is the best so far

 I thought it was better than the first episode by a mile personally, shit ending though I will say that.

*watches latest episode*

Wow... that was shit!

You're shit. Zing!

Dr. Who is so crap.

You're crap. Zing!

Doctor Who seriously splits opinion. Some people see it as horrendously camp and some are just immune to the whole thing. I personally think it's the best sci-fi TV series there is and isn't as overly pretentious as things like Star Trek and Stargate etc.

Each to their own.

I find it to be random, seriously bad sci-fi that is just ludicrous science fiction for the sake of it. And it is completely awful because of it. I haven't seen Stargate before but I'm going to watch through the first series of Atlantis so we'll see.

Then why are you here? o_O

Just droppin' my opinion.

You're crap. Zing!

Ok ok, I'm starting to 'get' the show now, with the aid of the third season which contains safe levels of Catherine Tate and Martha, who is just a better sidekick. I still maintain that it's an awful show, the difference is, that is why I kind of like it now.

Also it's on before 'I'd do anything' and I need to melt my brain on something suitable before I can get through an hour of guffawing at Graham Norton / John Barrowman using the word 'Nancy' straight-facedly.

Admitedly I couldn't stand the third season apart from a few episodes :|

The first and second seasons were so good and it's just gone downhill IMO

I only saw one episode with Martha but I much prefer Donna to Rose. BTW, when did they change the theme-music?

As for the Ood episode: It was ok but could have been much better. I hope this season improves. I really liked the Ood but this episode messed them up a bit for me. The thing about the mini brain was quite rubbish and the giant brain could have been so much better. Did they really have to make it a giant brain? Could they not have been so heavy-handed and having something that wasn't blatantly a giant brain as the Ood's central consciousness?

Reginald said:
I saw it coming and I really thought they wouldn't show it. Then they did and it was absolutely horrendous! Even worse than Doctor Constantine's transformation into a gas mask zombie in The Empty Child.
I noticed that he was being influenced by the Ood's version of the Vortessence (I'm using this phrase because I don't want to say "giant brain" again) but I didn't expect him to turn into an Ood. I agree that the transformation was even worse than the gasmask zombie one.

Did anyone else notice that they have brought up the bees disappearing thing twice in the first three episodes? BTW, that's actually a real phenomenon.

Christmas special I think. I could be wrong but I think it had a different theme.

Yeah, was the Christmas Special that started with the new theme. Still unsure about it to be honest.

As for the bees thing, I'm pretty sure it relates to next week's episode (the first of a two-parter) which is supposedly to do with global warming etc.

So there was a big thing made in the Pompei episode about the fact that the Doctor couldn't stop Pompei from being destroyed in the same way he can't stop the Time War from killing all the Time Lords, but he could save one familiy. One of the upcoming episodes is called The Doctor's Daughter or something similar. Anyone else make a connection here? Reg?

The very earliest Doctor Who said that he had a grand-daughter IIRWC.

I'll start re-watching Doctor Who when Davros comes back.

Seriously, I hate the way BBC do TV shows. Everything is just so glossy and shiny, and happy! Ohhh yes, couldn't be without lashings and lashings of horrible, cheesy comedy to lighten the load.

Bring back Sylvestor McCoy comedy, I say. Now that Doctor was a funny guy. Too bad he had a really ****ing stupid death so that a new Doctor could be crowbarred in for the movie.

Sylvestor McCoy was the worst D Who in history, and the reason the show got cancelled for so long in my opinion.

Steady now - worse than Colin Baker, or Peter Davison? The two Doctors who did nigh anything really rememorable (at least to me, anyway), over the Doctor that killed a Dalek by ranting to it? You're crazy, man. Crazy.

No, but seriously, apparantly a lot of other people disagree with you. He was voted Best Doctor over Tom Baker at one point I do believe, and let's not even stray into the territory regarding how fantastic Baker was.

I'm not too great with the history of Doctor Who's running time, as I use to watch on VHS years ago, but a quick Wiki search doesn't indicate any long standing gaps between the Sixth to the Seventh Doctor, or then again from the Seventh to the Eighth, which I do believe was that god awful film with that... whatshisface. I dunno.

Yes, even worse than them.

McCoy was an awful Who, and rated over Tom? Ridiculous.

As for long standing gaps between McCoy and McGann:-

"Alas, no. As Season 26 ended, so did Doctor Who, and in 1989, the show was no more"

"By 1996, the world was ready for a new Doctor. Paul McGann stepped into the role of the Doctor, with a sendoff sequence by Sylvester McCoy (reprising the role), for a joint US/UK production of "Doctor Who"

That`s a gap of 7 years, The scripts were brilliant in McCoys era, but he as an actor I don`t believe was suitable for Who, he was about as dynamic as a turd. So they stppoed the show until the US Tv Movie, which flopped so hard it hurt, which was a shame because McCann brought something good back to a Who performance.

No I agree with TheAntipop on this I really like sylvester mccoy as the doctor, I found him quite funny and the question mark umbrella quite unique as well.

''In 1990, readers of Doctor Who Magazine voted McCoy's Doctor "Best Doctor", over perennial favourite Tom Baker.''

- Wikipedia.

Like I said, though, I had no idea on the time frames of each series but I don't see how he had anything to do with the shows halt. I was always lead to believe that back then, he was to be the last Doctor, and that the film was the revival of the show (take that how you may, as I didn't think much of the film at all) but who knows. I honestly doubt it's anything to do with McCoy, though. Whether you like him or not down to personal opinion, he was one of the most famous Doctors. Or at least, I always saw him up there above Davison and Baker, anyway. Way, way up there.

I always loved him to be honest, but horses for courses.

What I think we are all forgetting is that John Pertwee is the best. :p

@riomhaire: The family he saved in Pompeii, that of Caecilius, is going to come back and bite him in the arse. Just you watch. Even my history isn't so awful that I know that he was supposed to die in Pompeii.
Having said that, there are a lot of red herrings this series. I reckon only about 2 of the possible 8 so far hinted at story-arcs will actually come to fruition this year.

@kupoartist: The First Doctor had his granddaughter travelling with him for the majority of his run. The Doctor has also made reference to being a father, having a father and even getting married (or whatever the Gallifreyan equivalent is!). The fact that the Doctor has a daughter is not the huge excitement of the upcoming episode. It's the fact that she appears to have survived both the Time War and the "burning" of Gallifrey. My guess is that she isn't his daughter at all and it's all a trap.

Dr Who magazine is hardly the deciding opinion in the matter though eh? ;)

As for being up there with Davison or Baker, maybe, but he was nowhere near the most famous doctor, that`s would be Baker (Tom) without a doubt.
Also, he was never supposed to be the last doctor, the show was stopped after the story with the Master "Survival" rather suddenly, the ratings had been going down since McCoy took over I believe, that`s why it stopped.
As for the question marks, they were possibly the worst thing ever introduced into Who, they came in wth Davison and thank **** they died with McCoy, cheesy crap. I guess we both want different things from Dr Who, I like the direction the new series has been going in, and rate both Eccelston and Tennant up with Baker (Tom), both being able to make light of a situation, but also, when they are really up against the wall, show why the Time Lords were feared by evil doers all other the galaxy. I never ever got that feeling from McCoy, just that he bumbled along with his umbrella. He certainly was not what I would consider a timelord to be anyway.

Your right though, that is just my opinion, and everyone has their own ;)

Why not? The Doctor Who Magazine was and is the official and biggest source of Doctor Who knowledge, information, fiction, etc and has a huuuuge following of readers. It was the Beano of Doctor Who, lets say. I didn't say ''everyone in the world'' disagrees with you, but when is that ever apparent in online polls and whatnot? All I was saying is that a helluva lot of people seem to think that McCoy was a great Doctor. I respect your opinion on him, I'm just saying. :p

Because Dr Who Magazine isn't representative of an entire fan base that`s why, same as the polls in music magazines that have the 50 best albums eva!!!!!!!!

Polls don't mean alot in the scheme of things, the only thing that proves popularity are ratings are far as TV stations are concerned.

No, I know that - I even said I wasn't saying everyone in the world agrees/disagrees. :p It's just the Doctor Who Magazine fanbase is fairly large, and it seems that a lot of them liked McCoy. I'm no saying anything other than that.

I don't think you seem to know just how big a magazine it is. Like I said, the Beano of Doctor Who, or the Official Xbox Magazine of D Who.

Anyway, moving on!

Just out of interest, when was this poll conducted?

Thought so, seems to be a case of everyone voting for the current (or most recent) actor to play him, in the same way that if you did it now, Tennant would probably be number one..oh wait:-
from wikipedia:-

"In 2006, readers of Doctor Who Magazine voted Tennant "Best Doctor", over perennial favourite Tom Baker"

I rest my case.

Well... yeah, obviously. :p I didn't say anything to resist that, all I said was that obviously people did like him. I'm not trying to get across anything else over that, as like I've already said a few times now, it's a matter of opinion and I can respect that you didn't like. I don't agree with your reasons, natch, but there we go.

Just let it drop already. :p

Moving on (again), I do believe the Sontarans are appearing again tomorrow so I'll deffo be watching. I can't expect much from this horrid shiney bright coloured Doctor Who series but a classic enemy usually makes for some good entertainment.

Looking at the new Sontaren costume... urgh, looks horrible. I use to actually be afraid of their horrible, burnt/patched skin but now they just look laughable. And the body armour and the fancy AWESOMEULTRAMEGAEXTREME looking rifle... no thanks, but we'll see.

I hope they don't do the same to Davros.

Well that episode was just crap. Thank god for Tennant who's amazing hair and jolly good acting saved me from potential suicide.

Well you don't like Doctor Who anyway, you've already admitted that, so no one was probably expecting you to like it. I hope that doesn't sound bad or anything. my apologies if it does.

Don't apologize to him, makes me wonder why he was watching Dr Who who if he doesn't like it :cheese:

It does. You offended me. :(

Incredible boredom.

Samon is often sarcastic. That's why I think he really doesn't like halo but he says he does.
