as far as scary goes, i'm pretty sure a good many of you guys played the doom 3 alpha leak?
For those who haven't there is a part in the alpha where you chase a pinky demon (half mechanical eyeless horror) into a bathroom as its dragging a fat greasy zombie corpse. You cut to a cutscene of the pinky demon taking a few bites out of the corpse and just as you are about to regain character control the demon slinks into the pitch black shadows of the stalls, just as the corpse it was munching on rises. You kill the corpse and find pinky is nowhere in sight. Well the bathroom is a mess and the florescent lights are swinging eeriely and everything is quiet. If you decide to linger and check the mirror like i did, you are greeted with the sight of the pinky running up behind you from the shadows, reflected in the mirror.
I practically shat my pants the first time this happened. I can't seem to make it happen again as you have to be standing and looking at a certain spot and the alpha is really buggy, but shit is it scary.

Those shots were originally in 4000X3000 (!), I saw the originals on a site a few days ago. They were NOT gameplay shots, obviously. They were shrunk down to 1024X768 for/by gaming sites. They look better at 1024 anyway, because at 4000X3000 you couldn't tell what was going onOriginally posted by dawdler
Just a curious question if anyone is informed more:
The MP images released of that red reactor and shooting dudes, was that from this 640x480 demo test? Or did they up res just for the shot? If they didnt, it looked absolutely gorgous in 640x480. No jaggies whatsoever. Either a totally revolutionary rendering method, or extreme FSAA (16xFSAA forced with tuner, hehe )...
I dont trust them. Unless my eyes are really tired and ignorant, I dont see a single line about which driver patchs they use. If they switched on the NV patch and never touched it, no wonder that the 5900 wins :dozey:
It runs at 83 FPS in 1024x768 on a GeForce FX 5900 (which is what was used at Quakecon).Originally posted by ApocalypseNow

Yeah, and a note for ATI fans: These drivers are BEFORE the OpenGL speed improvements.Originally posted by Yatta
This should end the argument thanks.

I rest my case. :dozey: Now shut your mouths and quit your bitching about Doom 3, it'll be a good game just as HL2 will be.

WTF. How is Doom III plastic lookin'?
It's not plastic. If DooM III looks plastic to you. Then Half-Life 2 must look plastic to you.

I kind of like it... But only kind of, its far to grey and poor of color. I'm sure the shadows and lighting will make it look cool, but I still prefer the HL2 approach with much more color.

Prolly cuz it's supposed to be scary. DooM III isn't supposed to be all "happy" colours.
And HL2 will be a happy story with an entire city dead and turned into headcrab zombies and/or killed by the combine?Originally posted by Tredoslop

It is all shiny, with little to no textures (from what I've seen so far, who knows what the future holds)
Don't tell me everything doesn't look shiny, and bulky, kind of like kids toys.

Evil? Demonic? I find it mostly just hilarious todayOriginally posted by Doobz
the visuals and such certainly carry a much brighter tone, and also Doom 3 carries a very evil, demonic atmosphere, while HL2 is more sci fi
