Doom 3 is screwed....

dont even bother, i tried to get it work and it just freezes. If you do get it to word i doubt you will get it to work well...

as far as scary goes, i'm pretty sure a good many of you guys played the doom 3 alpha leak?

For those who haven't there is a part in the alpha where you chase a pinky demon (half mechanical eyeless horror) into a bathroom as its dragging a fat greasy zombie corpse. You cut to a cutscene of the pinky demon taking a few bites out of the corpse and just as you are about to regain character control the demon slinks into the pitch black shadows of the stalls, just as the corpse it was munching on rises. You kill the corpse and find pinky is nowhere in sight. Well the bathroom is a mess and the florescent lights are swinging eeriely and everything is quiet. If you decide to linger and check the mirror like i did, you are greeted with the sight of the pinky running up behind you from the shadows, reflected in the mirror.

I practically shat my pants the first time this happened. I can't seem to make it happen again as you have to be standing and looking at a certain spot and the alpha is really buggy, but shit is it scary.

Wow, I should give it a try upon what u just said, where did u get the alpha, where can i download it now? high speed plz.

I had to play the alpha with god mode on, because I only got half a frame per second in some spots.
Before people jump on it saying "SEE D3 SUCKS," it was a very, very unoptimized alpha version. It's gotten better, I'm sure.

im positive id makes more money on licensing than their games

so many games use q3 tech

Im sorry, I like Doom 3 in all but I refuse to run it at 640X480 and only get like 35-50fps..

It will definately run better in sp.

I've seen the alpha run at 1024x768 on a P4 2.8 w/ 9800 pro @ 30-40 fps.

I'm sure the fine version will definately be optimized for ATI and NVIDIA gpus. High end systems should be able to run it at 1024x768 w/ max detail and still be @ 30-40 fps which is playable.

I'd love to atleast see a "official" optimized benchmark for D3 so we could see where we stand system wise.

Speaking of benchmarks, I wish Valve would release the Source benchmark, so we'd atleast be able to see how smooth Source would run in comparision. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to run full detail, quality at 1600x1200.

Just a curious question if anyone is informed more:
The MP images released of that red reactor and shooting dudes, was that from this 640x480 demo test? Or did they up res just for the shot? If they didnt, it looked absolutely gorgous in 640x480. No jaggies whatsoever. Either a totally revolutionary rendering method, or extreme FSAA (16xFSAA forced with tuner, hehe :))...

Yeh, it was probably running at about 150fps.

Some recent benchmarks here and here show the latest cards are more than capable of running D3 at higher resolutions.

Those shots were originally in 4000X3000 (!), I saw the originals on a site a few days ago. They were NOT gameplay shots, obviously. They were shrunk down to 1024X768 for/by gaming sites. They look better at 1024 anyway, because at 4000X3000 you couldn't tell what was going on :D

Oh, but that was the map we played. The red glow is only there when the reactor thing is actually firing, though. The room's normally just a cold, dull, metallic grey. Very Doom3-ish :cheese:

I dont trust them. Unless my eyes are really tired and ignorant, I dont see a single line about which driver patchs they use. If they switched on the NV patch and never touched it, no wonder that the 5900 wins :dozey:
Secondly, its OpenGL. The figures arent surprising at all. We KNOW Nvidia has always been the king of OpenGL. But its really not that important, as 90% of the games seem to come out using DX.

Edit: 4000x3000 DOES explain it quite a bit :p

This should end the argument thanks.

It runs at 83 FPS in 1024x768 on a GeForce FX 5900 (which is what was used at Quakecon).

OFFICIAL Doom 3 Benchmarks on the most recent graphics cards:

I rest my case. :dozey: Now shut your mouths and quit your bitching about Doom 3, it'll be a good game just as HL2 will be.

Yeah, and a note for ATI fans: These drivers are BEFORE the OpenGL speed improvements.

Edit: And it wouldnt surprise me the least if they actually just the same stupid technique as Bioware in Doom III, maybe some day we will see doubled score :p

To the guy who couldn't get doom3 alpha to work:
You sir, are an idiot. You don't click "New Game" to start a game.
That's all i'm saying.

From experience, when he could'nt make it work, no one can.. It's impossible, anyone thinking otherwise has to get a medical check... Is'nt that right Ridic?

Haha... i read the stuff about frames per second... nice one.

Doesn't matter now does it? the game is not due for release till 2004. And it isn't finished so there are still tweaks to be made, the whole optimization process :)

If you like a plastic looking game :p

WTF. How is Doom III plastic lookin'?
It's not plastic. If DooM III looks plastic to you. Then Half-Life 2 must look plastic to you.

Let it be Tredo.

By plastic looking he actually means that his virgin eyes are not used to graphical enhancements of the kind. :)

It is all shiny, with little to no textures (from what I've seen so far, who knows what the future holds)

Don't tell me everything doesn't look shiny, and bulky, kind of like kids toys. ;)

I kind of like it... But only kind of, its far to grey and poor of color. I'm sure the shadows and lighting will make it look cool, but I still prefer the HL2 approach with much more color.

I've noticed with the HL2 footage, everything has more....charactor to it. I guess its the bumpmapping or something. Doom is all smooth and shiny, and HL2 is more gritty and, well, real.

Prolly cuz it's supposed to be scary. DooM III isn't supposed to be all "happy" colours.

I think hes referring to more variety of colors, Doom 3 is all the same color scheme, whereas HL2 has taken a wider approach to their colors.

And HL2 will be a happy story with an entire city dead and turned into headcrab zombies and/or killed by the combine? :)

the visuals and such certainly carry a much brighter tone, and also Doom 3 carries a very evil, demonic atmosphere, while HL2 is more sci fi

Evil? Demonic? I find it mostly just hilarious today :p

Ahh! A portal to the gates of hell have opened and only one man can save us all! Ahh!

Guys, have u seen the movie Final Fantasy : the spirit within? If doom3 looks plastic to you, u must also find that film looks plastic. Movie industry always get the highest technology in graphics, doom3's graphcs can be compared to the level of that film, u can say u like hl2 graphics better, but u couldn't deny doom3 has better graphics. Don't agree with me? Watch ff:the spirit within, see how the characters' faces shine like plastic. We all know that hl2 is designed for a wide range of computers from about 800 mhz to the high end computers, it may be a marketing decision to get more buyers and to build a greater community for hl2. Doom3 is more for the next generation of hardware since it will come out couple months later than hl2. Therefore it's absolutly normal that doom3 will have better graphics than hl2. However hl2 should be still compatible by the time due to its huge community. See how come games today using quake3 engine or having great graphics, but none of them is as popular as hl1.

yeah, but it's on Mars, so why don't they just nuke the ****ing place?

lolol, good idea. it's just on Mars, so who cares, we are human living on Earth. Those creatures from the hell just looks like some animals, they won't even have the technology to travel to the Earth. Besides, if one man is enough to kill off them, what if Bush sends the us. army there, human simple rules. Why do we give shit to those inferious poor creatures from the hell.

I like the way u say "just nuke the ****ing place", that's what i do all the time in starcraft.

**** that, just strap some Georgians in a rocket with plenty of beer and ammunition
