Nice Doom 3 preview on gamespot... It explains alittle bit about the physics systems and tells about the 4 player mulitplayer... but....

well read this:

"However, we played the game on high-end PCs equipped with Nvidia's GeForce FX 5900 cards, and the demonstration ran at 640x480 resolution with only four players."

640x480 on a P4 3.0-3.2ghz Processor and GeForce FX 5900 256Mb $500 card!!! You gotta be shittin me!

Im sorry, I like Doom 3 in all but I refuse to run it at 640X480 and only get like 35-50fps..

Lol thats so horrible. Thats like the best system you can buy for the time being , and its at 640x480 , I havent played a game at that resolution , I dont think ever.

Doom 3 is meant more to be an eye-candy game than something fun to play. It's just John Carmack showing off his latest-and-greatest graphics engine with some gameplay and plot thrown in almost as an afterthought.

Wow, that is really sad. If that is true, and more stuff like this comes along,i wont even bother.

lol...that would be so stupid. Its not like that. Making max reqs a 3.0Ghz, 400-500$ video card would kill the sales. Its not gonna be like that.

Doom3's rec reqs should be the same as hl2's

Damn, I really gotta save my allowance, may take me to the next summer!Better be worth it! How much does the FX5900 cost?
After taxes and in Canadian Dollars.

agreed.

i will still purchase a copy because imma old time doomer :)

im not expecting alot from MP, mainly just SP.. besides, theres a few other games coming out with good MP so that means more time for those games

jesus you will probably be able to run the game with at least 30fps on 800x600 with 2.0Ghz and a radeon 9700pro or higher. Stop freaking out.

btw, if you want doom3 to look as good as it can, get a 9800pro. Not a 5900ultra.

ApocalypseNow, first of all you have no clue if there were reasons besides the obvious for why they ran it at such a resolution, for example there currently being a bug at higher resolutions or what have you. And ofcourse there is the obvious reason which arises from the fact that the game isn't even close to being released, hence chances are that the engine is nowhere near being fully, or at all for that matter, optimized.

exactly, listen to that post.

Every game dose some fps fixes before they release.

Where did you see that 30FPS? I heard they did it in such a low resolution just so they could be 100% sure that it would stay at 60FPS smooth, heard that from multiple places. I'd like to know your source on that.

Let's not forget Gamespot called it "extremely playable". So it didn't suck!

I was also surprised when I read about the resolution, but the only thing we know is that it runs well in 640 on a 3 Ghz with FX5900, nothing more.

oooohhh ffs

First off before i even get into this, wtf is wrong with running a demo of a game on a fast comp?

Apoc, what that mp "demo" ran like is not at all representative of the final game.
I know Apos is eager to jump in at this point with "but carmack said the technology is finished", so il lgo ahead and counter that now. Carmack said the render engine is basically done, and hes been saying that for many months. Thats not to say there wont be a whole lot of optimization going on from now till release.

The simple fact is this game as atleast 5 or 6 months of tweaking/optimization/finalization to go. We dont know why it skipped a bit in some places. They have only been working on the MP part of the game for like 2 months and that is hardley enough time to get everyhting sorted out. Its not the graphics alone that demanded the high sys specs at quakecon. They havnt done anything additional with the graphics since the alpha a year ago, and it ran fine on what we consider to be medium/medium-high systems at this point in time.

No matter what the game ran like at quakecon, the only thing that matters is what the final game will run like. And thankfully there is no need for speculation on that. By what carmack said, you will be able to run the game at medium resolution with most graphics set at high/medium-high with 2ghz, geforce4 ti4600(or equivilent), 512MB ram. And keep in mind, we are tlaking about a game that has atleast a half a year before it comes out. If any of you have a worse system than this even now, your a bit behind. Its an expensive hobby, its just something you will have to deal with.

This si absolute foolishness. I dont understand why people think that iD is only concerned with liscensing engines. They are putting alot of time and effort into making a great gaming experience. They could have released the engine to developers a long time ago if they were not concerned with making a great game. As id has stated, the Doom3 engine was built around and for the game Doom3. Instead of me listing the reasons why beliveing this is foolish, how about you tell me what makes you belive they arent concerned wiht making a great game?

Doom 3 is meant to be eye candy, funny thing is, Half-Life 2 is all about gameplay and it's graphics are even better.

i think doom3 has better graphics, but of course hl2 wins for gameplay

Doom3 is meant to be an immersive horror game. Why do oyu think the iD team is not concerned with making a game with great gameplay? As for the hl2=better gfx, the vast majority of people agree that doom3 looks better, even hl2 fans who generally dont like iD games.

but of course hl2 wins for gameplay

FFS, you havnt even played either game! We can talk about graphics because we have seen vids/screens, but how the **** can you begine to comment on gamePLAY if you havnt PLAYED the game? sigh

doom3 better make me shit my pants. The last scary game i played was avp2, and it was too easy. I NEED TO GET THE SHIT SCARED OUTTA ME!!

Try the Micheal Jackson Halloween Game, you get to see what his face is really like!
-or-
The OJ Runaway game
-or- Undying

he he.. thats not funny.
when i play cs i play in 640.. but i will never play 640 in another game.

When did this forum become a part of "Doom3.net - the definitive D3 Source" ?

This is the Hl2 forum, not doom3...

By the time D3 is out, there will be new hardware available. You'll probably be able to run it at 800X600 with AA, etc.

HOLY SCHMOKES. This means that when you upgrade again in a year or two, you'll actually be able to run it better. You might even notice an improvement from upgrading. DO YOU REALIZE WHAT THIS MEANS? It means that they're building the best engine they can -- even if it barely runs on today's hardware. That's what you can afford to do when you don't HAVE to sell a million units to survive. You can shoot for the stars instead of that old crappy 800 MHz machine some dude thinks he can STILL play games on. (HL2 on the other hand has chosen a DIFFERENT ROUTE and they're gonna be kind and let you play on that crappy old computer.)

Hmm someone cant let it go. I didnt put down either card , they are both good , they are both equal , let it friggin go for godsake let it go.

This is a pretty unnecessary thread.
Hmmm, maybe because it's about DooM III!
/me dies

Dimitri, why would you belive that bullshit in your sig? Most people who think that way also think that iD makes a lot more money by liscensing engines than they do selling games. Thsi si simpy false. So who do you belive that?

im hungry.

I'm sure they were running at 640X480 to ensure excellent framerates. It's more than likely still rather unoptimized, and they're still adding a lot of stuff (the corpse-fade effect, which involved the dead guy's skin dissolving off was added a few *days* before Quakecon started).

Yes, i was at Quakecon, I played it. You could NOT tell it was 640. It was gorgeous. And of course the framerates were just fine, though I don't know if I can tell 40 fps from 60 fps from 100 fps in a game I'm not familiar with.

Good attitude , Im putting you in for the sportsmanship of the year award.

Rabid- Yeah Im thinking its unoptomized too. Since D3 is likely coming out WAY after HL2 , Id like it to be moderately successful ;) Dont want it taking HL2 sales too bad. And Ill def play it. I was never around gaming for the initial release of any of the other Doom titles.

Id Software has invented FPS games and has been in the buisness longer.

WTF? I was asking why people belive that iD is all about eyecandy and is not even trying to impliment good gameplay.

Absolutly right, the samething for half life 1, cuz most people are poor and happy to play games on the low-end computers, that's how hl community is growning bigger and bigger. It's a marketing decision that Valve let us play on crappy old computer. Valve didn't use source engine to max on hl2 (watch the video where Gabe talks about hl2), many computer capable of running hl1 won't be able to run dod, ns, etc.

Man u guys are already talking about 800 MHz, I know many people are still using 300 MHz to play counter strike, I used to play soldier of fortune 2 mp demo with my 300 mhz(horrible experience, i have to keep my eyes on the floor whenever i go outdoor) , but I still get my position among the top10.

I second Rabid Llama, I played D3 and it was a whole lot better looking at 640x480 than most games are at any resolution. If you're playing a game where the polygons just have flat textures and the lighting is bland, having a high resolution is important. But with D3 I found that the detail level of the materials were more important than the screen resolution.

Remember, NTSC TVs only have 525 scan lines and anywhere from 240 to 500 pixels in the other direction. Most DVDs don't even put out more than 720 X 480. Higher resolution is not necessary for make photorealistic images, greater DETAIL in the images are what make them look better.

as far as scary goes, i'm pretty sure a good many of you guys played the doom 3 alpha leak?

For those who haven't there is a part in the alpha where you chase a pinky demon (half mechanical eyeless horror) into a bathroom as its dragging a fat greasy zombie corpse. You cut to a cutscene of the pinky demon taking a few bites out of the corpse and just as you are about to regain character control the demon slinks into the pitch black shadows of the stalls, just as the corpse it was munching on rises. You kill the corpse and find pinky is nowhere in sight. Well the bathroom is a mess and the florescent lights are swinging eeriely and everything is quiet. If you decide to linger and check the mirror like i did, you are greeted with the sight of the pinky running up behind you from the shadows, reflected in the mirror.

I practically shat my pants the first time this happened. I can't seem to make it happen again as you have to be standing and looking at a certain spot and the alpha is really buggy, but shit is it scary.

I haven't played the Doom 3 alpha leak
...We sould PM each other Flying debris-i have something to ask you...
