Dragon Age: Origins

quite nice cg for a game cinematic.

yeah the lip syncing was great! we usually see horribly mismatched mouths to voice but this turned out great. also it had Dragons and it gave me a hard on

I would frankly rather watch gameplay than this. I thought that is what the trailer was for--to see party-based gameplay combat. Oh well. Still can't wait to get my hands on it...for PC. :p

Eih, I was all set to toss off some 'nice cinematic, but I'd rather see more gameplay' post, but I can't even bring myself to say 'nice cinematic'. Before I even got halfway through, it was enough to make me faintly nauseated. It's just trying so hard in a self-conscious effort to be cool, from the generic characters and their predictable sound bites, down to the music and its not-so-subtle lapses into crappy rock stylings.

Weird, I expected to be unimpressed by this trailer but not actually deflated like I am. In its own way it has discouraged me more than all the uninspiring gameplay footage that has gone before, since it hints at the game's overall aesthetic, plus it was an opportunity for the makers to demonstrate their storytelling elan, yet it missed by a mile. Not a hint of either maturity or BG-esque charm. And the voicing sounds iffy yet again.

Ah well. The proof of the pudding's in the eating, and all that. Maybe this CG was farmed out to a studio who simply miscalculated the cheese factor. I'm going to be buying DA for sure, but I wish I could be shown just one thing that suggests it isn't going to fall well short of the expectations I had a year or two ago.

This.

Was it my imagination or did the wee jumpy red haired girlie start talking like an 'Oirish' leprechaun perchance?

yea... Yeah. And who the heck wears a cloak in the mountains, one strong gust of wind on a ridge like that and you're a sail heading south. And what retard wears a metal layer without a high wicking thermal layer next to the skin in sub zero temperatures? you wouldn't catch Ray Mears doing that, it's frostbite waiting to happen, srsly. And where are their ****ing crampons?? You'd think Mountain Rescue had nothing better to do.

God damnit. I want a REAL Dragon Age review. I get my hopes up every time I see this thread.

Curse you Stern. Curse you.

I was going to just post "SHUT UP NERD!" but then i continued reading your post, and I dont think NERD is a harsh enough insult for that. That was just too nerdy to be nerdy. Even if you were being sarcastic.

If this wasn't Bioware, I would be instantly turned off by how they seem to be marketing it as "X-TREME Medieval Fantasy!!!".

The combat in this game is gonna suck. Its not like oblivion where you click the mouse and your character swings his sword as you click, its like you click ounce and you wait for it to complete a combo like The Witcher game. That system feels weird to me anyone else feel the same way?

I was thinking the same thing after seeing gameplay trailers, but I still might get this game just to try out a different style of combat in an RPG. Not to mention that its Bioware.

Because combat in RPGs always play like that in Oblivion.

Which, y'know, sucked. But whatever.

Well, after that trailer I feel significantly dumber. As much as I always wanted some Gears of War mixed in with my Baldur's Gate...

Wonderful trailer. Classic fantasy at its best. I'm hoping for some Lord-Of-The-Ringesque storytelling.

Is that shit seriously what we like now? The damn thing is an abomination--no wonder gamers are pegged as knuckle dragging chronic masturbators forever trapped in their childhoods, this is our public image. Roger Ebert wins.

Wow! Fair and objective :)
By the way, this is not what we like now. It's what we always liked when we were buying the golden boxes from SSI. Gaming history.

Maybe we should blame it on console gamers dumbing down our rpgs :p

I'll just sit in the sidelines and idly stroke my picket sign. I fear I've become a crotchety old man at the ripe age of twenty. I fail to see where you see the suggestion of "Lord-of-the-Ringsesque" storytelling, though. I've yet to see a rendition of Rings featuring cheapo guitar riffs and horrendous one liners, but maybe one is in order.

I've tried really hard to like what I've seen of this game, simply because it's Bioware, but I just can't do it anymore. I expect a certain quality from Bioware when it comes to story and acting, but from what I've seen this is truly dreadful. That video with the female mage dialogue made me feel physical pain, I was that embarrassed. I'm really hoping they've simply chosen bad videos, but if that was the case I'd expect at least one to look promising.

As of now, the clichéd story, awful acting and contrived sex scenes are too much to bear, even if the gameplay itself turns out to be great. The Witcher raised the bar so considerably with it's startlingly bleak settings and a mature storyline that didn't rely on shit metal played over flashes of tits and blood in it's marketing. Not to mention having the main character not talking in a third person game is dreadfully archaic, especially after Mass Effect and the aforementioned Witcher. Trying to be engaged in a conversation when one of the characters is staring blankly with the same dipshit expression on their face is a chore, one that we should have evolved from by now.

I hope they surprise me, I really do, but so far I'm nothing but disappointed.

I don't know ... my hope is there because I'm ignoring the trailers and people's feelings based on said trailers. And that's because Bioware have always sucked at trailers and such.

Remember the trailer for Mass Effect? It looked so boring I fell asleep watching it. But the game itself was awesome. So I'm thinking that the proof of the pudding will be yada yada.

As for sex just because it is present does not necessarily mean its presence is contrived. You could have them back in BG2 but they were hardly crowbarred in.
However it being a game for konsole kiddies means its prob just gonna be gratuitous softcore.

does anyone actually get anything out of sex in video games? it's awkward and not at all sexually tantalizing. really it's a waste of effort as far as I'm concerned

I'm perplexed. The game is not out yet and you know the full story?
I said "As of now", i.e. from everything I've been able to see so far. Perhaps the full story will amaze, but there is no evidence of that yet. In fact, the evidence suggests quite the contrary, most videos I can't even bear to watch all the way through, that's how bad I consider it.

Edit:

I usually manage to avoid it altogether, for instance in Mass Effect
I chose Ashleigh as the romantic interest, but also chose for her to die instead of Kaiden. I returned to the ship and of course Liara was no longer interested. No action for Sheperd in my game.

The day Mountain Hiking becomes more nerdy than playing computer games about dragons is the day i'll happily slit my wrists with a +3 Letter Opener of Bleeding

Why the hell would you enchant a letter opener?

Tell me a mainstream PC game that has hardcore sex scenes.

Cheer for the headsup - i'm going to make some characters :)

Was this deliberate sabotage or just how it went down?

Why the hell would you enchant a letter opener?

Because they'd never expect it ;)

Character Creator now available:

Downloading now, so I can check out all the pixilated bazoombas on offer ;)

just tried it out, not really anything special and I'm also not too impressed by the engine so far. Not detecting your resolution to start with and long non-skippable cutscenes are something I'd thought new games had learned not to do.

As for the cut-scene, it's a marketing tool. Not the actual game.

Stupid unskippable advert/cutscene and then the awful discovery of no bazoombas slider (going from from 'large' to 'own gravity field' naturally) or skimpy mage outfits....what a complete gip....

* puts away tissues

Just how it went down I'm afraid. I felt heartbroken the whole day.

Don't worry I'm presently replaying the game for the third time. I'll bang that racist bitch for you with my Paragon xenophobe. He bloody well hates aliens (though he'd never kill a kitten) ;)

Was utterly underwhelmed as well. These things can usually keep me entertained for a bit, but the lack of customization other than the face was annoying.

Well, I had almost zero interest in this game before watching the intro in the character creator.
Now I'm thoroughly hyped and am definitely considering buying this.

I hope they release a demo of the game itself.
