[Euro-04] Portugal - England expectations

we got robbed (again) wooooo!, should have won portugal 2 - 1. nevermind, 2006 only 700 days away.

I don't really think Sven's that good of a manager. His tactics seem to be too passive, like his personality.

Better than what we used to have :)

I think perhaps you are right on him being passive but England haven't fared to badly...They only really lost this one because of several key problems they faced.

well I don't think Portugal should have made it to the quater final, but what difference does one oppinion make to a biased referee

i only have one thing to say.

portugal's twelfth man was swiss...

damn ref, f*cking disallowed goal. :flame:

why couldnt we have the ref with the bald head and the eyes that are about to fall out? he looks funny and hes fair!

Yea, he's probably one of the few respected ref's, players respect him because he makes good decisions.

Not like that Swiss fool.

Did you see him when he made the decision? You could blatantly tell by his body language he was making it up.

agreed. then we might have won!

*singing* Collina Collina! You... something something that ryhmes with the original tune and sounds cool!

And I'm sick of all the damn focus on the managerial side. I could go out there and say "do this, do that"; it's more dependant on the damn team. Captain's seem decorative these days; issue radios! Then we won't suffer a breakdown of communication!

i think the manager is there to give the players a specific mental state. the coaches (like steve mcclaren in england's case) are the one's who deliver actual football and training instructions.

anyway, i'm sure there are gonna be the old media mob calling for sven's head :hmph: well i'd rather have him in charge than anyone else, certainley not scolari (big lucky sod anyway).

one step back, two steps forward? roll on 2006.

I don't particularly rate David James as a good goal keep either. He seems to make lots of mistakes. I'm not talking about the penalties as, granted, most of those were near impossible to save, but he seems to make lots of mistakes.

If only Alan Shearer would come out of international retirement as well, he's quite old, but he's cool under preassure and one of England's best strikers (argueably the best).

That

"Low velocity lob"

was because of a really shitty penalty spot. Which is also the reason why beckham missed completely then looked directly at the spot with evil eyes....

I've seen it in real slow motion, Beckham just didn't put the ball down properly.

And that lob was intentional as far as I could tell, or it was a mistake by the taker, but it wasn't due to the pitch.

WE WON

WE WON GOD DAMN IT

I just returned from ouside, we won to England!

You didn't do poo Sprafa :P

Anyway, Munro is banning you for being Portuguese.

Nah I'm just kiddin, I'm posting from my wirless outside your house and i have a large cannon aimed and ready to fire.

The freakin city is boiling, I was around to the Main Square & it's time to PARTY!

Thats another good point...Lets face it, Portugal doesn't have the same weather England :)

GET USED TO IT!

bwahahhaa!!

This is too good to be true.

Not really...if it were too good to be true then it wouldn't have happened outside of your head. Who knows, maybe this is all part of a cruel dream you are having which is overriding your memory of the real game.

sprafa's endless taunting has driven FLS completely mad.. the odd thing, he's not all that different because of it.

WINNERS MAKE HISTORY!

SCOLARI DID HIS JOB AND HE'S KIKING ASS

Scolari did **** all. The ref saved your arse big time.

you Britons can whine all you want, we won. end of story.

Grrrrrr...

I wouldnt have minded you winning at all if it wasnt for that damn goal being disalowed... it just seems WRONG! :(

Well played tho I guess! :)

I just read the whole thread....damn that was a lot of flaming.

I don't think anyone has the right to blame a ref for making a bad call unless they have reffed the sport themselves.

I ref hockey and soccer. I know how tough it can be. Imagine at that stage? It totally changes your perspective on the sport once you've reffed it, believe me.

Unless it truly is a blatently obvious call that he misses.

A ref bases decisions he can't see on his supporting team of linesmen. It was obvious he couldn't see that goal and therefore he should have gone to his linesman, who in this case said the goal was valid. So he overturned his linesman on something he couldn't even see. Complete BS.

You're a ref? "Get 'im lads! 'Ere gives us the broom....No, the broo- Come here. Look, the broom, see! Now 'it 'im with it"

Ahem...I believe timmy may be right. I'm going to lie down...

This is how it feels to have a blind ref on the pitch!

* thinks about the match Holland - Czech :rolling:

Both teams deserved to win, Portugal were far better in the second leg and played some nice offensive football !

I think Campbell's goal should be allowed. So actually England was robbed!

Beckham again! Missing a penalty during a big tournament! He was running way to fast to the ball and by using his full body weight was just wrong!

In slow-mation you actually see the ball moving to the front a little... right before beckham hits the ball! His left foot hitting the grass with full pressure making the grass and the ball in the end to move a little!

And keeper Ricardo haha :bounce: saving a penalty with his bare hands and claiming the winning penalty! I think he is quite a hero in Portugal!

What is wrong with Figo? He is being the biggest *ss of the tournament! He was playing a very bad game, claiming almost every free kick and when he was taken off the field he was walking away right into the stadium, he was not even wishing the subsitute luck during the game!

Figo has such a big ego, only on the pitch the space is big enough for his ego! I hope Scolari sends Figo home! He don't deserve to play anymore IMHO!

I've been a ref myself at one point; albeit only during a brief stint in school :|

Mortiz put it better than I could; it feels to me almost like the guy was trying to be contreversial; responding to something he didn't even witness.

Someone tell me how international rugby is so anti-traditonalist that they stoop to using replays, but why we continue to use bloody idiot officials with no immediate playback in football?! Why?!

Portugal kicks England's ass, eh? Good job, because Figo clearly can't kick a ball any more...

that was an exciting game!!! :)
i don't watch very much soccer/football but am glad i did this time :)

Portugal didn't deserve to win at all. I knew the only way we'd go out was through penalties, and thanks to Sol's goal being dis-allowed, a Portugese player standing on Rooneys foot and injuring him, and David James being totally useless at saving penalties, we got shafted as per usual.

Ronaldo was covered well, and you could see he wasnt happy about it and to be honest if Portugal make it out of the final 4 i'll be very suprised.

Oh, and well done Owen, what a goal! Suprised the ref didn't dis-allow that one too :frown:

My god what a bunch of sore losers. Both teams played excellent football. It was a great game. England was the better party in the beginning but leaned too much on the first goal. Portugal scores after playing much more attacking and aggressive. In overtime both teams play and fight like lions, excellent match. The referee decision on the english goal was a correct one imho, because you simply can't lean on a goalkeeper with 2 guys and expect him to do his job very well.
You are out. Get over it. No offence but England is not the only country playing great football that loses anyway. Mark my words, look at the Dutch in the next match :|

If you watch the replay of the Sol goal you'll be able to see both sides of the arguement; Terry's arm only comes down on the goalie after his leap; just as the ball is inevitably passing under the bar. I think it would take a very strong minded player not to raise their arms when jumping. Campbell brought Terry down mind; had they brought the goalie down it might have been more understandable, but we're good at self destructive tactics...
