Fallout 3: Moar Gameplay Vids

TBH with Bethesda I can't be sure if the lack of DRM is due to consideration towards the customer or just random oversight.

TBH, I don't know what I'm gonna do. Everything I've seen of FO3 so far screams mediocrity. BUT they decided not to ship any DRM with in the game, which seems to be something truly worthy of praise these days and something I personally want to support. Soooo... should I buy the game to support Bethesda's choice of NO DRM, but at the same time support a possibly mediocre game? I only wanna support companies that make good games! ;( But no drm = WIN!! I can't decide! Impossible! Nooooo! *head explodes*

Or maybe the game will actually turn out to be an amazing feat of game design (ie. good) and I'm worrying over nothing :eek:

Where did this idea that we're supposed to buy products to "support" corporations come from? Did some genius viral marketer somewhere at sometime create this ridiculous concept?

I see it everywhere ... I don't get it. Companies aren't charities. I care nothing about "supporting" them. I buy products because I want them, no other reason is at all relevant.

I didn't even notice the lack of shadows. :|

You will.

It will be like making the jump from 3D models back to 2D sprites again. If it stuck out like a sore thumb in Oblivion 2 years ago, it will be much much much more apparent now. Maybe I'm just spoiled by every other damn game engine out there that got it right. :rolleyes:

Maybe.

Its absence didn't bother me at all in Oblivion, and I doubt it will in Fallout.

I agree to an extent that companies should be allowed to flounder and die if nobody wants their product, but I think when people say they're 'supporting' a particular company it's not because they think that company needs money. Rather, it's because consumers have looked at the conflicting attitudes and ideologies of companies within the marketplace and decided that they want to see a certain type of business model prevail over another one.

For instance some companies will emphasise consumer convenience above all else, others will try to foster new creative talent... some will act like total qunts in pursuit of protecting their IP, which they consider to be of paramount importance. Some consumers like to feel they're contributing to the prevalence of a certain attitude by 'supporting' a company that practises it.

PS: In all honestly, I mean honestly, do you really think Fallout 3 would please the mass public (and I'm not talking about hardcore fallout fans here, if that were the case, they would be making fan product that probably would sell to a minority...) if it was like the original ones, becasue I sure don't.

In all honestly, I mean honestly, do you really think Diablo 3 would please the mass public (and I'm not talking about hardcore Diablo fans here, if that were the case, they would be making fan product that probably would sell to a minority...) if it was like the original ones, because I sure don't.

Fanboy-ism clouds your judgment ol' prickly one.

Promote this man. I'll buy F3 under the condition I can mod the shit out of it. I have a few ideas I'd like to try

/evil grin.

I buy products because I want them

Then we agree. You just look at the issue from a much narrower perspective. You want a product - you buy it. And that's the end of it. When I buy a product, I buy it because I want it, yeah, but also because I want more products like it.

I believe the only way a regular guy like me or you can affect a company and its products is through (not) purchasing their products. I mean, you can send a billion angry e-mails to a company complaining about DRM or start a petition or something, but if their product sells well anyway, they don't give a crap. But if their product doesn't sell (for whatever reason), they might actually give it some thought, maybe listen to folks, and perhaps even change a thing or two concerning their next product.

So, I want games that are a) of good quality, b) contain no DRM bs that hurts legit users like myself. Thus, I buy games that are of good quality and contain no annoying DRM. And likewise, I don't buy games that are a) not of good quality, b) filled with ridiculous DRM schemes.

This is why I wrote my earlier tongue-in-cheek post about "mediocrity + DRM = head explosion".

"Sentinel Lyons is unconscious."

Uh-oh... it's Oblivion's unique NPC system all over again.

The amount of detail in the world is impressive... it's a shame they didn't add environmental shadows.
It seems that they were trying to focus on combat, but I wish they had a bit more of the looting and inventory systems shown, as well as some more RPGish elements, such as quests and dialogue.
Otherwise, there are a few little things that make me happy about this game. I love how in VATS when you target a body part, it highlights the armor or clothing model on the character, rather than a sort of abrupt "general body region" highlight.

Oh god i'm seizing with excitment over this game! Only16 more days!! OH GAWD IVE NEVER BEEN THIS HAPPY FOR A GAME.

Sorry Fallout, You're not on my list anymore.

I'm going to stab you right through your liver.

I mean, what's going on with you?

Jintor's sarcasm-o-meter is broken, we need a replacement! Hold him down!

Yeah, I am gonna stab you through the liver.

Oblivion had bad graphics and you can stop playing because you are obviously missing something about what the graphics in a game should be :)

I liked oblivion's lighting engine, and I liked the draw distance. Their models were ok, and the stuff they got from speedtree looked alright, but holy **** I hated their textures. They all looked so bad. Characters faces, the ground textures, wall textures, uhg. Thank god some of the people in the modding community had some texturing skill, because god damn the originals were FUUUUUGLY.

hi i'm Krynn! i write game reviews without ever playing the game!

You know you quoted me talking about Oblivion right? The game thats been out for two and a halfish years, and that ive played for over 60 hours?

In essence, yes.

Yeah, God forbid if he's excited for a game that'll probably get rave reviews and provide many players with hours and hours of entertainment.

If only god would forbid it, my faith in humanity would be restored. And I guess I would show a little more faith in god's existence.

Look, I just want to kill someone, ok? It's not about what he said, or even what he did. It's about me and this knife.

U ppl r 2 srs.

Ugh. This game looks so amateurish it's unbelievable. If I didn't know any better I'd think it was some budget game that you would get off of Steam for $15. It's inconsistent, stiff, and lifeless. I guess that's what you would expect from a Bethesda game, but I was kind of hoping they had fired their animators and character modellers. Whatever. If the RPG element is strong enough it could be pretty good, but all they are showing is action, and that part of the game looks pretty awful. Especially VATS, that's just a dumbass idea that will only waste everyone's time. When I'm faced with a common enemy in a game I want to shoot him and get rid of him, I don't want to watch a million stupid zombies die in slow motion. It doesn't even look cool because the models and animations suck so bad.

As long as you don't expect too much, and remember that it's obviously not going to be the best game ever you should enjoy it.

You know full well most reviews nowadays are completely and utterly pointless, as they are little more than hype flagships of marketing.

Like the exclusive reviews certain mags will get from Bethesda. Gee whiz, what rating could possibly the game get in such a case?

I think it looks fun. :) I'm just looking forward to making a character and exploring.

(assuming I even have time to play it; dead space, fallout 3, far cry 2, littlebigplanet, all within a week of each other :x)

A lot of people will say it's good and a lot will say it's bad. Yours and my opinion do not account for everyone else. Just saying.

The problem is, bad game design is not subjective.

I wouldn't be so sure of that.

* Bad texture work
* Mediocre animations
* Lack of any reaction to being hit from the AI
* Lollerskating enemies (animation not reflecting the speed of the character)
* The magazine not being detached when reloading the AR
* Badly implemented ragdoll system
* Lousy AI (BoS behaves like a bunch of retards with lasers when attacking)
* One-shot killgun.

Off the top of my head. It's simply bad game design.

Funny how a lot of games share many of the traits on that list. Current and past mind you that many people have enjoyed. I'm not saying it's not a bad game just that you need to rethink what game design actually is and realise it's completely subjective. What you specifically mention in that cute little list aren't all problems from design but technical, artistic, and all other manner of problems.

I say "game design" as in "all elements of the game".

And last I played, high profile AAA titles didn't have flaws Fallout 3 has.

IMO most of these are problems with the presentation rather than the core gameplay, so it's not really accurate to call it bad game design. To me, the core appeal of this game is:

- Creating and developing a character
- Intuitive and accessible controls
- Exploring an interesting world

and as far as I'm concerned, the game hits all three.
