Fallout 3 walkthrough with combat footage

Right now they're "polishing" it (so basically sitting around doing nothing).

Sure when I polish my apps I sit around doing nothing but wasting peoples money. Then critical systems start shutting down and shit hits the proverbial fan. The Q/A process keeps going long after a product is apparently finished.

Do you honestly think they can rewrite the AI and animations in the two to five months they have left until Fall 2008? This isn't VALVe we're talking about.

No Valve would make it worse then silently fix it. Which somehow would cause something else unrelated to cock up.

TBH half an hour was more than enough time for me to discover that the dialogue in Oblivion stank, or that the writing in Planescape was superb...

Patrick Stewert made the Emperor work. Then he got killed off halfway through the friggin tutorial. Nice going, Bethesda.

For this, I demand you remove me from your signature. You're an idiot if you think that sitting around doing nothing is what polishing is.

He voiced the part adequately, but in all honesty even at that stage of the game I was underwhelmed by the script itself that he was working from.

Hopefully this has the broad mod-community that Oblivion has, because even then that'll make this game 20x better.

I just hope we have a save system that doesn't require me to make a half arsed vb project for multiple profiles and the like. Although I could probably just do it in .net and save myself a lot of time. Really it's very simple. If I have multiple saves with different character names those different characters should have their own autosaves.

My point being, no matter how shitty your script is, if Patrick Stewert is speaking, it's alllllll-right.

By "finished" they likely mean content complete, or it's out of beta and into pre-release testing, bug-fixing and polishing. Fable 2 is in the same situation right now. You're a fool if you think that work on a game stops long before release - in 99% of cases, the developers are crunching away right until they pull the latest build from their hard drive to slap on a master disc.

That's often why patches appear as soon as a game releases; the developers had issues identified but simply weren't able to fix them in time. Publishers are essentially monsters, and they'll pull the game from your calloused hands regardless of how complete it is, come release time. They don't care about bugs, only cold hard cash. Studios like Valve and Blizzard are incredibly fortunate to not have to conform to hard release schedules, and with the luxury of Steam and other auto-updaters, they're able to quickly and effectively issue patches to their games as soon as the issues are fixed, usually without the incredibly extensive testing that other publishers like EA and Take Two make their developers go through. Hell, unless you're releasing a multiplayer game, you're lucky if they even give you permission to patch the thing for more than a month after release. Just look at BioShock on the PC, which still has significant issues yet support for it has dropped off the face of the Earth simply because the executives have got the team working on the sequel already.

Tell me again, how they're supposed to rewrite VATS, AI and animations in the little time they have left?

Tell me again, how they're supposed to rewrite VATS, AI and animations in the little time they have left?

1. VATS is fine from what I saw, only one glitch.
2. Until I see a demo or the final product I'm not going to base how good the AI is on a few minutes of shitty footage. Word of moth from randoms who could have very well been playing with a negative mind set don't count either.
3. Animations are not written. Being serious yeah could use some work but 5 minutes in Max I could fix a lot of the issues I saw.

All comes down to how skilled their code monkeys are or if the higher ups/publishers actually care.

Wow, I went into this thread expecting a bit more support of what looks to me like a promising game. Of course these trailers aren't gonna blow you away, they're trying to appeal to Mr. Mainstream and his idiot wife by showing combat. So why is everyone bitching so much about it when this is an RPG? I found the combat in Oblivion pretty damn awful, but loved the game because of the RPG elements. Now I'm pretty much certain Fallout will be better than Oblivion, with a much improved story for example, so where is all this hate coming from? And if you're one of those oldschool Fallout fans who's crept out from under a bridge, don't bother answering my question.

Personally, Fallout 3 is one of the games I'm looking forward to this year. Sure, the combat isn't as good as dedicated shooters but this isn't a shooter and it sure as hell isn't for a second why I'm interesting in playing it.

I check this thread 10 times a day to see if its updated. Please keep posting even if you hate the game. Mmmm kay

Lol what's with all the unnecessary swearing in the vid at the start?

*continues watching.

1UP don't hold back on the swearing, they are pretty casual about what they like and how they feel about things, it's not for effect. They do good Audio podcasts as well 1upyours, and GFW, which are both well worth listening to. They did quite a few reports on E3 over the last few days.

1up show interview and footage of Fallout 3 (2nd part after RE5)

The dude is pretty frank about a few things which is quite refreshing tbh.

That video made me feel a lot better about the game.

I still dont like the combat system though. It seems, from what we've seen so far, that using the targeting system is far, FAR better than just shooting in real time. I dont have a problem with that kind of combat system, in fact I think its pretty cool, but they're splitting their focus between two combat styles, and I think neither of them will be very entertaining after a couple hours of play.

I think the AI looks kinda dumb with melee weapons.

I LOVE the hacking game though. I might just make a hacker character just so I can hack everything. :3

Lack of vocabulary strikes again. The occasional swearing is fine but when it's constant it get annoying real fast.

Lucky for me I don't pay attention to half the crap PR guys spout before a release unless it's someone who actually tries to deliver i.e. Valve. I don't think anyone here needs reminding about how much of a let down Oblivion was from all the so called promised Oblivion, but hey still a good game.

Are you a Nun perchance? :dozey:

Also Valve don't deliver on all their promises. They made some bold claims when they first showcased HL2 regarding dynamic AI, which never transpired in the end.

Neither am I, but I'm also not a wilting flower when it comes to the use of the English Language, or it's full expression (life is not a 50s TV show..people swear..get over it). You anything constructive to say about fallout 3, or you want to moan about the 'declining standards of game Journalism' further?

Boomerang to the head!

Back to Fallout 3 (i'm capped, so I haven't seen the 1Up cast yet); will the VATs system work like action points like in Fallout 1 and 2? Or is it only for targeting and whatnot?

Less squabbling & winding each other up. Back to the awesome combat of Fallout 3.

I've not seen much on the game, except a gameplay video from E3 with that minature nuclear device you can fire. It looks great, but if you introduce that kind of power and control into the game, surely there isn't any skillful combat or strategy involved? I'm completely new to the Fallout series so I'm not sure if this is the point or not...

It seems to be the general agreement amongst the UnpleasableFandom of NMA that the mini-nuke is a 'bad idea', to put it politely.

It's worth watching the 1up interview. Todd pretty much explains why they've showcased the guns etc, rather than the dialog etc at this stage. I wouldn't expect to get your hands on mini-nuke early in the game either, plus from what's said it's as much a hazard to you as it is to the enemy due to the nature of the beast.

The 1UP interview is pretty good, but I hate how Howard just runs straight into fire, without using any cover. I wish they asked him about that - how realistic is the damage system?

Well, they have to compensate for all the brain-dead MTV-influenced troglodytes who were raised on Halo.

The trailer itself is literally just a weapons demo and an opportunity to show the game in motion, plus the demo character is hacked to be all sorts of powerful for the demo. I'm sure in real play cover will play a role. I thought the hacking/lock picking was good, the fact that the made power armour use require a perk and that they talked about the size of the game world overall. That Todd freely admitted that other games (Mass Effect perhaps?) were much better at characterization of NPCs than Beth had achieved in Oblivion, and that with Fallout 3 they were actively working on addressing that issue I thought was good. That being said I don't expect Beth to fully realize those ambitions, but if they can get halfway there the game will be better for it.

And the modders will do the rest! \o/

I'll go take a peek at the 1up review now; it's probably worth waiting a little while.

If a joke needs to be explained, then teller needs to reconsider his approach. ;)
