FIFA World Cup

I don't think they will win it though, I'm certain we'll see mostly South American teams in the quarters and ALL SA teams in the semi's.

The team with the best defence wins the world cup. A common theme this year has been playing with 2 defensive midfielders breaking up play and protecting the back four. Look at Mexico, Uruguay, Brazil & Germany for example...uncharacteristic for Brazil but Dunga swears by it.

Argentina - very good offensively but wait till that terrible looking defence under pressure. Jonas Gutierrez spends 3 minutes at right back. Heinze & Samuel are old and slow. I think Mexico will do well this evening.

Jury is out on Spain. Torres is missing, Villa looks good. Will rely on their ability to not concede too many...

Throw bricks at whichever team you like, just keep in mind that it could be construed as a petty act of jealousy, that's all. I won't be cheering if Germany are knocked out, although i won't be supporting them. I guess i'd like Brazil to win, as they are by far the best to watch IMO.
No, it would only be jealousy if it was a sport we really cared about and failed at, rather than just a chance to cheer on a national team now and then when they happen to qualify. And when Ireland get knocked out they're welcomed home enthusiastically, not pariahs. An entirely different attitude to the game.

Spain have lost the flare they had in the last Euros, Torres is just not performing but Villa still looks very dangerous, as does Fabregas. My money is on Brazil, their defensive capabilities are superb, Gilberto Silva sitting in front of the back four is in the form of his life and we have all seen Luis Fabiano can do, and when you have the likes of Kaka and Elano supplying him, thats the right ingredients for a world cup victory.

Does anyone know a link to a good graphic of the knock-out stage?

This ok for your Shaker? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/groups_and_teams

I think Brazil will go all the way to the final but I'm not sure about their firepower. I don't rate Fabiano as the spearhead Romario or Ronaldo used to be. Kaka hasn't been the same since he left Milan & didn't Elano pick up a nasty knock in the Ivory Coast game? I can't deny I do adore when they pass the ball around in typical Brazilian fashion :p Like you say they look really solid defensively (except that North Korea goal!) so if they can feed the wing backs & Robinho then it's worth putting a few quid on them.

We reached the quarter finals and crashed out in the same fashion, players not playing to their potential, the team itself not working properly. Big ****ing deal if we reached the quarter finals. The basic premise is, that we have always had a really good England team, and we have rarely given anything spectacular, its not just the one or two times, its EVERY time now. We didn't even get that far this time. We are very clearly, a joke. Anyone who says otherwise really needs a reality check.

I too am gunning for Holland now, really want to see Van Persie scoring some goals so he is raring to go for Arsenal's new season.

Reality check? You seem to think we have had the best players in the world, which is flat out wrong. If you did a list probably only Rooney / Gerard would be in contention for the top 25. Spain would have half of their squad.

We have been fairly good, but only quarter final good IMO. Any England team that has ever been REALLY good is entirely in your own imagination.

I'd probably struggle to write a list of all time England greats that could beat just the current Spain / Argentina / Brazil etc teams.

I understand your disappointment, but we just aren't good enough. We build ourselves up with this expectation that we are the best in the world, which is just delusional. If we had performed better in the earlier stages I dare say we would have gone a stage further, but no further than that.

So why so happy that England are out, or are you just copying Scotland?

so now I heard that a suposed invalid goal was valid to argentina?

well this and the german one smells like a sold game

Nah, these people simply need to allow video replays for at least goals and off-side. It is ironic really that the FA actually can make a change but hasn't so far.

Too bad for Mejjico btw. Argentina wasn't playing very well. Who knows what would have happened if that first goal was disallowed.

Yeah, Mexico came off to a really good start, this game could've gone anywhere if it wasn't for those two first goals. I think the Germans have a fair chance of beating Argentina.

Looking forward to the Argentina v Germany game. Germany really put on a ****ing clinic in the match with England, sucks for you guys :( I sat in a room with a bunch of friends watching the USA game yesterday and you could have heard a pin drop. Tense stuff.

All of a sudden, everybody I know watches soccer. During Euro 2007 I knew like 2 other people following the tourney, but this world cup is as big a deal as the superbowl for some reason. I think it's awesome.

I'm so close to Mexico it's all I hear about.

Wonder if their gonna mention the world cup they WON IN 1966! Again?!

Don't hate the game, hate the player. That pisses me off to no end as well but it's just a result of flawed rules.

Also, there's no reason we can't let referees watch playback video for questionable calls. People treat the notion with such lunacy, like you're taking away something special and quaint about the sport. Soccer needs to get on the technology bandwagon already...

The game seems to reward the player, in the sense that they don't punish them enough, and so they'll keep on doing it, or attempt to do it at the risk of getting caught.

I mean come on, it's rampant in the sport, enough that it's basically expected now.

I want to see summary executions!

Oh it's simply lovely watching the English media squirm and implode :)

I'm disgusted by the way the media have reacted, and all this fuss over whether Capello can remain manager. Of course he ****ing should, why is anyone even questioning this?

It was the same with Sven in the end, and as a result we got rid of the best manager we ever had (IMO).

Truly shocking response to our exit, I'm ashamed to be English today, not because of our exit, but because of our response to it. What's next? Drowning the manager if we don't win it?

Maybe if we spend a few years actually enjoying the game like the Brazilians / Spanish / Germans do we would get somewhere in these tournaments.

I agree. Its an absolute joke that they could even think about getting rid of Capello. Yes some of the blame needs to layed on him but its not like he is solely responsible, the players didn't play the way they are meant to. He is a great manager and definitely needs to stay.

For England to start playing better, first the hype needs to go. We can no longer look at ourselves as title contenders anymore, or keep saying 'THIS IS OUR YEAR LOLZ', our players obviously cannot handle pressure, but then again its England, even with a team of lepers many will be convinced we will win it. There needs to be the want to play well, and the enjoyment of the game needs to return, which I don't think has been there for a long time.

FIFA really needs to start acknowledging their faults. EVERYONE can see the terrible officiating going on and the lack of goal technology is just ridiculous. I want to punch people in the face who say diving and bad calls are "part of the game" uh NO IT'S NOT.

Soccer players these days KNOW that a dramatic dive will win them a free kick and card. Replays with controversial calls will eliminate most of the stupid calls and ridiculous dives making the game much more enjoyable and a lot less pathetic.

You see players with IMMENSE talent but that all goes out the window when they do ridiculous dives and fight with the ref for hours and basically do anything to sway the game in their direction.

It's getting pathetic and maybe this is why soccer is not accepted so well in North America.

I'm not saying that EVERY game is like this but there has been an increase in bad sportsmanship and bad offciating.

at least you didn't get knocked out by ghana

You make it seem like Ghana are bad when they are a good team. They gave Germany a damn hard time! You were fortunate Michael Essien is injured otherwise it could have been much worse, the rest of the team play in decent leagues.

when that happens to a team like argentina you will see how it will change

A 9mb animation? Really?

Could have went and found a youtube clip of it that it was taken from.

I only comment on it because it plays so slowly on Chrome. Doesn't have any impact at all due to that fact. Need to find it full speed!

That was so entertaining to watch. This is what I'm talking about. Players played rough yet didn't over exaggerate with every little challenge.

Also, how much smaller was that field compared to today's field?

To be fair: Netherlands - Brazil 1974 was an exceptionally aggressive game and especially the Dutch would have deserved more bookings than they received. But other than that you're right.

Dunno about the size of the field though.

I feared that Germany result coming from a long way off. They were thoroughly deserved winners and their players function miles better as an actual team than ours do.

Having said that, the officiating was an utter disgrace (and for Mexico vs Argentina on the same day). From Germany's perspective, there's a huge psychological difference between a team that has just chucked away a 2-0 lead and a team that has led for most of the match. Sometimes a poor team can overcome a good one if they do the right thing at the right time, but uneven refereeing made it difficult for England to do that. When all's said and done though, we can only blame our own poor play. The only positive is that we took such a thorough drubbign that no one individual can be set up for crucifixion by the papers (although Capello might cop it in the throat).

I might root for Germany now, why not. Ozil/Muller/Khedira etc are exciting to watch but the team's not so all-powerful that they'll make an easy go of it.

God, this Paraguay - Nippon game suks ass. Extra time and pens methinks.

Japan lost on pens. They were my team after South Korea.

Now I have to pick someone else... probably Argentina.
