FIFA World Cup

Its a shame, both teams deserved to go through. Just unlucky.

Did you guys hear that the England team visited an orphanage in Cape Town before heading home?

“It’s heartbreaking to see their sad little faces with no hope,” said Jamal, aged six.

Watched the second half of Spain - Portugal (1-0). The Spanish team was a lot of fun to watch with players like Villa and Llorente, but Portugal was so very uninspired. Ronaldo summed up his performance succinctly by doing this after the game:

lol they showed a bunch of venezuelans whit the flag in the seats

sure someone people went "who are these?"

:(

Portugal basically set up their tactics so as to contain Spain and take them to penalties. It worked for a time, they were very impressive defensively and were quite dangerous on the counter but once Spain scored they just switched off, they had no backup plan. Very nieve approach to it, you have a player with the ability of Ronaldo and you play a defensive game? lol.

Still Spain were very impressive to break through that defense, just shows the amazing quality they have in attack, watching them just further confirms just how little a chance England had of getting anywhere near winning lol. David Villa is the player of the competition for me so far.

Well he played up front with Silva for Valencia, for Barca he'd likely be the main spearhead with Messi and maybe Henry branching off him.

Yeah its insane really when you look at their time now haha. They already have two of the best players of the world cup in there, along with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and maybe even Fabregas in midfield providing he makes the move from Arsenal (although I REALLLLLLLLLLY hope he doesn't).

Well, Brazil it is then. This is gonna be really, really tough. *prays for a replay of the 1974 semis*

Yes, Holland are my new team. I have a Holland football scalf from when some dutch dudes came to stay at our house :)

Unfortunately, it doesn't look hopeful against Brazil this time around :S

I thought Henry was going to America or something?
Yeah he almost certainly is. I think he's going to the New York Bulls team or something. So Villa will probably be down the middle or the left. Ibrahimovic is going I hear too. Rumours that Barca want Torres for the left side, Messi holding the right as usual.

Also Real Madrid signed Di Maria from Benfica yesterday.

He is now dating Cheryl-lookalike Sarah Purnell, a lapdancer, who revealed yesterday he had been in touch with her every day during the World Cup. The 23-year-old from Birmingham told how she first met Cole at a London nightclub on May 2 – and slept with him that same evening after he wooed her with a McDonald's takeway. That was just three weeks before Mrs Cole filed for divorce.

Classy!

btw I am suffering from withdrawal symptoms. This is the first evening without football in ... over two weeks or so? And I don't even follow league football.

Well played Holland! :D

Sadly missed the match but will catch the highlights. Did catch Snejder's goal though, was awesome (although a fluke) xD

Ghana should win tonight!

That first goal was indeed a fluke. The second one though was a gem.

And yeah, I am rooting for Ghana too.

Ah yes great second goal. Amazing to go one down against Brazil and bring it back like that, good show dutchies!

I estimate Spain vs. Holland final, but I think Spain will fly to the victory. They played against an immense Portugal defence but still somehow managed to fight through. But who knows! I am rooting for Holland allllll the way :D

No nails left, almost out of cigarettes, but WE WON!!!!!

I have never been so excited about football! That match was ****ing great - but brazil lost their sanity in the second half.

Spain would be nice. Germany would be even better though. That is such a historic match.

Yeah, that red card was atrocious. Melo knew Robben had an injured thigh. What an asshat.

EDIT

From the BBC's running commentary:

Can I just clarify something here? Prior to today, Brazil had lost only two of their 25 World Cup matches in the southern hemisphere - against Yugoslavia in 1930 in their first World Cup match, and the final in the Maracana in 1950. This is a shock of huge proportions. They call the 1950 game 'Maracanazo' - I wonder what they'll call today? Still reeling.

*glows orange with pride*

*ponders changing nationality to dutch*

That was a sweet strike, just came out of no where.

I think this World Cup has had the biggest collections of shocks ever.

Italy out.

France out.

Brazil out.

England out (not that that was going to be a shock).

I was about to say that those teams are facing new and inexperienced players, but then you look at zee Germans.

Italy was a huge shock for me, then I realised how many players I didnt recognise on that team.

And Ghana has completely shocked the world.

So in future, lets not make ***king PREDICTIONS BEFORE THE GAME STARTS...English kunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnigits.

Oh yeah England to win for sure.

Wrong.

Brazil will win for sure.

Wrong.

Italy to reach the finals.

Wrong.

Stop making predictions in football, its all bollocks.

I agree, nothing is certain in football anymore, its certainly not in premiership when teams like Burnley can beat Man Utd. But it now applies to international football. Ghana have, as you said, shocked the world, and Brazil being beaten by Holland is just incredible. Its awesome though, predictable football is never any fun.

As for Italy, most of their great players are just too old now, Del Peiro retired after the last world cup, Pirlo, Gattuso, Camoranesi, Buffon and Zambrotta are all well into their 30s and even beyond now. And well yeh if I ever hear anyone say England are going to win it before a competition I will march over there and slap them.

This is incredible. Has to be the best match of the competition so far. Utterly amazing drama.

Ghana was robbed, what a fucking dick move by Suarez. But then, why shouldn't he have? He didn't have anything to lose. As far as I'm concerned, they should have just counted the goal, instead they have rewarded sabotage. But at least the Dutch are now facing the weaker team with an important player missing.

Agreed - like rugby has the penalty try, football should have the penalty goal. Cheating ****.

Yeah taking the time into account, I think most would just palm it away. From the result, he did the right thing really, despite it being very dirty. Uruguay were always going to win the penalty shoot out, but Gyan was just in pieces in the end, was actually awful to look at it. Can't even begin to think what he is going through at the moment.

Still, they should hold their heads high, they defied the odds and showed yet again that world football isn't decided before the games start, and they've shown that all teams should not just be overlooked. Well played! And yes as you said ryan, the dutch now play the less dangerous side with one of their key players missing, straight to final.

Suarez was on the line, he blocked the first shot. The second one was instinctive, it would have hit him in the head anyway. Ghana had a perfect scoring opportunity from the penalty and they spurred it. Cut the guy some slack and learn2football.
Maybe Suarez can be the keeper for Ajax next season.
Haha, good thing Suarez is suspended for the next game...if he had kept in that form against the dutch he'll end up moving Maarten Stekelenburg from no.1 :p

He reached for the ball with his arms. The goal should simply have been counted. A penalty isn't fitting punishment as a certain goal was turned into a maybe goal, is there any reason not to take that opportunity if you were Uruguay in that last minute?

It wasn't certain, it was being blasted in his face.

The look on his face isn't "heh, let's cheat" it's "DO NOT WANT FACEBALL".

It's virtually impossible not to put your hands up when your brain figures out what's going to happen.

As Glenn said, instinctive.

EDIT: Actually, i had only seen it once, and it only came from a header. Having seen it again on youtube, he uses his hand on purpose, he moves to paw the ball away.

It's a flaw in the game that such an act would result in a penalty, which takes some nerves to score in the 89th minute to send your country through.
