FIFA World Cup

I have a feeling the game was probably cut off in North Korea after the third goal.

That's a logical fallacy. That's no reason why Portugal should have not played their best.

So having a few extra point in case it comes to goal difference or goals scored is more important than people facing death or imprisonment? It's happened before in totalitarian countries.

I'm sure the Portugese team will feel proud if the N. Korean players or their families are imprisoned or worse when they end up qualifying without it going to GD anyway.

Yes. It's not the Portuguese team's responsibility to consider how their opposing team's government will react. Just when exactly should Portugal have eased up?

Any country crazy enough to execute its football team over a 7-0 loss is crazy enough to execute them over a 1-0 loss, too. Or over anything but a Glorious Victory for the Motherland, for that matter.

Yes, its football. If you want to watch politics go watch the news or something.

No, don't you get it? If you die because of a football match you die in real life!

Oh come on.

"OK team, let's not go too hard against these guys, we don't want anyone to end up dead"

If that's the way NK operates, there's not a lot we can do. They choose to play overseas, and overseas is not NK.

Kaka's sending off was incredible, one of the worst red cards I have ever seen.

Agreed. I mean he looks completely unaware of the other play and when he accidentally hits him in the chest, the Ivory Coast player falls dramatically covering his face as if he punched him in the there. :|

Oh snap, thanks for that. Seems like it's quite an elaborate thing to qualify.

LOL you can't hold it against Portugal for scoring 7 goals against North Korea. Its the world cup, they have every right to demolish a team if they provide the opportunity. If it were North Korea with the quality they wouldn't hesitate. Its a bloody football game for crying out loud, thats how Portugal treat it, they are hardly gonna think 'oh hang on a minute lads, these guys are from a tolaterian state ruled by a bastard dictator, so just beat them nicely', it should be 'guys we need the points today and it would help to increase our chances on goal difference too so go out there and destroy them!'

If the North Koreans knew their lives would be in danger if they did badly then they shouldn't have gone in the first place. They are likely just playing the sympathy card anyway, to make the world feel badly about their utter mauling on the field. Doesn't do anything for me.

No you don't understand. It's not like they could say no. North Korea is a state where if you are sentenced for political crimes, you and all your extended family are sent to concentration camps. They have special concentration camps for the family of 'criminals'.

One woman told of being forced to assist injection-induced labours and then watching as a baby was suffocated with a wet towel in front of its mother. Many former prisoners told of babies buried alive or left face down on the ground to die. They were told by guards this was to prevent the survival of half-Chinese babies. If fleeing North Koreans are discovered by Chinese police, they are almost always returned home.

It's very possible players, and the family's of players may face this now if they return.

Well its just completely absurd. You cannot hold it against teams who beat North Korea just because they will face persecution back home. A) its got nothing to do with the other teams, its a game of football at the end of the day and B) its the biggest competition in world football and if a national team are given the opportunities they will batter teams by as many goals as they like. If it were the other way around, North Korea wouldn't hesitate to batter a team 7-0.

In all honesty FIFA should have disallowed North Korea from participating if the players may face penalties if they lost games.

It's not just that they lost, but a 7-0 defeat is an absolute humilitation which dictators like Kim Jong just can't accept.
After Zaire's 9-0 defeat in the 1974 World Cup the dictator Mobutu reportedly told the players they would never see their families again if they conceded more than three goals in their next game vs Brazil. It wasn't the act of losing to an acknowledged superior team that mattered, but losing in such a devastating manner.

Portugal could have eased off after getting a lead of 3-0 or 4-0, and imo should have.

Well that's football I'm afraid, if the North Korean's don't like it they shouldn't even have a national team.

The North Koreans don't have a ****ing choice the country is run by a single man who is a ****ing lunatic.

For what it's worth, I agree that NK shouldn't have been allowed to enter a team, the safety of the players must be guaranteed.

also I dont think the portugal players know how is the situation on north korea

Man, that would've been amazing if it ended up being NK vs SK in the final. God a war would surely start over that...

Why do people always assume it's the "whole countries" fault?

The face and reputation of the entire nation is at risk, and the dictator of that country is an amoral nutcase who will not hesitate to completely alter history to fit his agenda.

You think this same guy will tolerate his country being humiliated in that fashion? You don't think the coaching staff will suffer severe punishment for embarrassing the nation?

World Cup football is not mere football. Only blind idiots would think World Cup football is nothing more but a friendly competition. World Cup is politics, and the winner establishes superiority in the most prominent sport in the world. Scoring 7 goals (without any sign of complacency) against another country is a giant middle finger in their face. In this case, Portugal just gave one of the most unstable countries a middle finger.

If it were any other country, I would've probably laughed it off. Of all the countries Portugal could humiliate they decide to humiliate the most dangerous of them all.

Politics my arse, its a sport, I highly popular one no doubt. Anyone who thinks of it as anything more than that needs their head examining.

You discussion is ridiculous. If anything, FIFA should have denied North Korea's participation in games. To expect Portugal to in the heat of the game consider that the other ones might be send to labour camps or worse, is quite frankly ridiculous. As pointed out, Portugal needed as many goals as possible to assure as big a goal difference as possible towards Ivory Coast, so one can't blame them for continuing to push on.

Dramatic ending, South Africa almost had it. French coach is a complete twat though, he didn't even shake the SA coach's hand, bad looser or what?

Hence why I said, FIFA should have disallowed them access to play in the world cup.

Are there sources saying that the korean team will be punished or all of you just speculating?

I will have to speculation. It will be based off the time when the Columbian national team were punished way back in another world cup final, their goal keeper was shot or something lol.

Yeah, wtf was that about? France were a disgrace. CBA all tournament. Gtfo.

I heard the entire French team didn't even practice together? Apparently they all hated their coach.

They missed one day's training.

The coach was leaving after the world cup, and France had already decided on his replacement, so using him in the first place is a joke.

North Korean team. Please say that.

And Us vs Nigeria. Huh. Good, I suppose. Now I am sleep deprived and shall sleep until noon.

Yeah Argentina vs. Greece was one of the worst matches of the competition.

lolz.

South Africa are now out, but I'm adamant that their first goal, the first goal of the World Cup, has been the best so far.
