Gears of War (X360) Discussion!

Nah, I've got a 360 and I'll be getting a Wii early next year, nowt wrong there. ;)

maybe, but it seems a bit wrong to have two consoles.
Back in the day everyone owned a SNES and a Mega Drive. If they didn't, they were called gay and got stoned.

I'm not interested in GoW apart from the graphics. It seems like just another repetitive shooter. I didn't even think HL2 was better than HL1, so it'll take more than that to make me buy an Xbox.

bah - GoW is goty. There's no other shooter like it. Co-op owns and multiplayer rocks \o/

tbh, it does looks samey. it doesn't look remotely innovative or revolutionary or origional, but it does look pretty and damn cool. liking the chainsaw action.

I'm assuming you guys have tried it? There is no other game that plays like GoW - it's quite unique. One of the things that shocked me the most is how fresh and different it feels, something that doesn't happen often with video games.

Those who hve been labelling it as 'generic', or 'just another ....' etc are very wrong.

Its a mix of SWAT tactics (the whole cover thing), Splinter Cell (view and similar firing) and just cool, awesome, non-stop action. Chainsawing just brings a smile to your face every time you do it. Its amazing. When was the last game you played where you could blind fire and effect how fast you reload, and curb-stomp and chainsaw someone??? 100/10!!!!

Well Woodsball breaks legs :p

GoW is great mp, coop or dm. But the sp I'm done with and on to other games. I think by yourself you aint going to get as much mileage as say Saints Row or Dead Rising.

And GoW does feel a lot like Killswitch, well to me at least.

I wasn't talking about GOW, I was simply commenting on what he said, which in turn, wasn't about GOW. I'll be getting GOW at Christmas, I'm quite looking forward to it and I'm sure I'll have a blast. Of course, I doubt I'll tag it with unique.

I wasn't aimed at you, Samon, just the few posts above.

Agreed, GOW is GOTY. Dead rising justified my purchase of an xbox 360 and GOW sent the value through the roof. Try multiplayer, it is fantastic.

The thing with GoW, from a buyers perspective, is that it's the game you buy the console for, but you stay for the other games.

I wouldn't say GOTY at any rate, but GOW is definitely kickass and multiplayer is awesome.

My only beefs with the game is that there is little to no storyline (big shame, if they tried it could have at least been half as interesting as any other FPS, but they didn't try and there is almost no storyline thanks to that) and that the game is short. Like 6-8 hours short. Fortunately, Multiplayer is awesome, and co-op is alot of fun.

Could do with one more difficulty after "Insane" though.

Oh and the ally A.I. for Dom is absolutely terrible. Absolutely terrible.

Overall, its a great game. 9.2/10 from me.

Agreed on most counts.

Unfortunately I think it will land GOTY over Zelda because of graphics and extra press.

I'm wondering if you played Freedom Fighters at all? I wouldn't say GoW is generic at all, but in comparing Freedom Fighters with GoW, the Single-player is trite compared to Freedom Fighters.

I liked Freedom Fighters, for the short time I spent with it, but much prefer GoW. This is almost certainly down to online co-op, which is an absolute godsend, and multiplayer, which is just plain awesome.

It doesn't seem to matter that the AI for Don is lacking when you can replace him with a buddy so easily, or that the game is short when it's this much fun. I've played through GoW with various friends a few times now - if aything it's geting more fun the more familiar we get with each act. Left on my own I probably would have gone through the campaign once on each difficulty (which is still pretty good for a single player game), with online co-op there's a good chance i'll be playing it years from now.

So far it's easily my GOTY. It would have been based soley on the multiplayer. I was expecting something pretty and mindless like many people, but ended up with one of the most team focussed games i've played online.

Now it's time for Zelda to man up and show us what it's made of :)

Not if you're playing through Solo, or if you don't have an xbox live gold account. otherwise the A.I is cannon fodder, and a major burden.

I'd say its biggest problem is its length. Any game that costs $100 and only goes for 6-8 hours is a ripoff (looking at you halo 2). fortunately for Gears of War its fun to play through again but if i didn't have Xbox Live than i probably would have already traded it in.

Fair enough - I just can't imagine going for a 360 without Live. Only playing GoW on your own is like buying CS:S and only playing bots.

For me GoW is anything but short - silly number of hours have been clocked up already :)

See thats the thing, alot of people can't afford Xbox Live, so they are missing out on a massive amount of replay value. Thats the thing that really ticks me off about gamesite reviews. With online console games they don't take into account that some people might not have online capability for that console and thus buy a game based a 9.6 review, expecting it to be incredible, only to be delivered with a game that can be beaten in two sittings with little replay value (given they don't have online capabilities yada yada yada).

I guess its more my beef at how much praise the multiplayer portion is responsible for these days. It's just really misleading when you're a gamer on a budget.

Not sure about GOTY, but it's most definitely 360 game of the... hell, ever, and it'd be a contender for console game (up against Zelda... which I won't play this year anyway).

Seriously, this game is pure concentrated awesome. It definitely has it's share of issues, but none of them are crippling and they don't diminish the fact that this game sets a new bar for quality. It's not revolutionary or innovative in any great way, but it just oozes class in most every way, and it's ****in FUN!

As for the issues, they've pretty much all been touched on already. Agreed on Dom, he's pretty useless in the (many) parts where you branch off from the rest of the squad. As a full squad though, they're fairly smart on their own, and they're handy for supressing and sometimes killing enemies.

HOWEVER, they can't be called a real squad when they don't FOLLOW. FREAKIN. ORDERS. Seriously, every time I give a regroup/attack/defend order it seems to go completely unnoticed. It really can't be called a proper squad-based game if you can't effetively order them around, definitely something that needs to be improved upon in GoW2.

I doubt there are may people who can afford a 360 and games to play on it yet can't stretch to a Live subscription. It's the same price as a game. I guess some don't have access to broadband, but other than that I really can't think of a reason to miss out on Live.

Haha, that was awesome. Just got out of a ranked game (well, a few hours ago anyway), it's a few rounds in and the guy who's pretty much been carrying our team has just left, so it's 3 on 4 in their favor. We're getting pretty soundly owned but we're still holding our own - almost. Anyway, this round we all rush down to the bottom (the trainstation map), but so do most of them. My two teammates are dead pretty much the moment they step out, and I'm left alone with 3 of them charging me from either side. Think quick - I whip out the shotty and move to one edge of my cover, lean out and, BAM! First guy blown neatly to gibs. Atleast I took one down with me, right? Whoops, next guy's almost on me, better see if I can get a few shots off... bam, bam... he's down, and the finisher, bam! Wow, two down, I'm going out in style. Now here comes the last guy and he's trying to flank round from behind with the chainsaw. No chance, quickly latch onto cover and blind fire him to chunks. Okay, so it's down to 1 on 1, and I'm really starting to think I can win this... but now I'm being pelted by torque bow arrows and I have no idea which direction they're coming from. Narrowly dodged two... and I already know this guy's a good shot from previously rounds... right, I caught which direction that last one was coming from. Rush right at him just as he's loading in another round. He sees me and turns tail to run for cover. Gotta act fast, one nicely timed roll to close the gap, a shotgun blast in his back and he's on his knees. Aaaaaaaand a curbstomp to finish.

I win :D

Rented this game last night. Completed it on Casual already, re-doing on Hardcore.

This game is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. So much fun, so good looking, and the weapons, enemy types are fresh and original as mentioned above.

Loving this, even though I've completed it I may have to buy it too.

GOTY

:)

He should've just melee hit you twice with the bow instead of running (people really underestimate melee).

Exploiting enemy mistakes and openings is how you win in this game :D

Sounds like a fun round

Ah, I hate being hit by melee, that little stun (Does it always happen ?) is annoying.

I really need to learn the names of the maps but that one where it's on a street and the ocean is far on the left and on the right is 2 small side streets.. anyway, it was first to 7 rounds and I was going soo freaking well (Ended up with ~19 kills I think and the next closest was 13 on the other team), it was disgustingly good. It was good too, I was playing with all Aussies and half where good friends and we both had 6 wins so the last round was really intense.

I love tagging people with grenades though it's a little 'too easy' (Though I hate when they follow you and you die too ) so I only do it if I have to or I don't want to lose.

I played a ranked match and there were 3 French men on my team.. communicating was a little tough but they were good and every now and than I'd hear what I assume was a compliment in some butchered English with a strong accent. ;)

Thing is, I can see many areas of GoW where stuff could be added/improved.

GoW 2 will more than likely come out.

So what's everyones fav weapons combo for SP?

I like the Assault Rifle (chainsaw) with a sniper most. While the sniper doesn't have the punch to take out targets with a single shot (unless you hit a power reload + a headshot) its great in coop as a softener for your buddy or a finisher if he's hit the Locust a few times. And I simply find the Assault rifle the most versitle weapon in the game, good at all ranges.

I loved the shotty/chainsaw combo. Close range I blew everything up, and from further away, I'd do damage with the assault rifle then rush them and blow them up with the shotty.

I like having the shotgun equipped for CQC. I keep the Lancer for firefights, and the Magnum for when I'm feeling lucky. An alternative to the shotgun for me would be the Longshot. The headshots look great amirite?

I go for sniper/shotgun if I can. Otherwise it really depends on the situation and level. I like the burst rifle wep. because it deals a lot more damage than the lancer, but then sometimes I miss out on the chainsaw opportunities - like when I rush boomshot on gridlock, wait for another player to grab it... chainsawed before they can even squeeze off a shot.

As for my fav. sniper/shotgun combo, if you can even hit somebody in the arm when they charge you with your sniper out, they're just about dead. A quick switch to the shotgun and a decent blast will put them down.

I feel naked without the Lancer. My two favourite sidearms are the ones on my shoulders. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

No, seriously, the shotgun and the magnum. I think the magnum is underrated. At least in SP, it's great for taking out boomers at range.

Halo 2 cost a hundred dollars?

Thank God I just borrow most games...

Its $100 AUD, so yeah, its expensive.

$100 AUD is $78.95 USD.

So yeah, thats expensive. Really ****ing expensive.

Finally got to play it this weekend when my friend and I were able to hook up his 360 on my 61" HDTV and lay the smackdown on the locusts with real jaw drapping visuals. (I can only meet him on weekend when I come home and even then it's only once every few weeks because of his work schedule). Just got done with Act 3, gonna resume 4 later today. The game is addictive as hell, all I've got to say so far is that I hope that there's a sequel. Also can't wait to get it on PC whenever it comes out, definetly hope it gets revved up to DX10 capablities and then I'd have to upgrade to atleast a 7900 graphics card to enjoy it at the 360 level.

I'm not interested in GoW apart from the graphics. It seems like just another repetitive shooter.

To be honest, after beating the game four times (1 Casual, 1 Hardcore, 2 Insane) i tend to agree. There are few fights that actually stand out in the game, and most of them tend to be exactly the same as the last one. The are only one or two standout and truly challenging fights in the entire game. Thats the opening fight of Act 4, and the fight in Act 1 where you have to storm the machine gun nest in the musuem or town hall or whatever it is. Other than that i really can't remember any fights that made me smile. Overall, the single-player campaign is fairly weak on anything but Insane. Although even on Insane, some of the bosses and incredibly easy. Especially the Corpser, which is just a joke.

Now i'm pretty sick of the game. Multiplayer is fun though, but i don't know how long that will last, as i've never been a big multiplayer kind of guy. I gotta be in the mood to play, i can't just pick it up and start an mp game expecting to have fun.

So I finally got a proper go last night at a freinds house. The game is stupidly impressive in alot of areas. The visuals, sound and effects are beautiful, and it really does add ALOT to the game. Although I only played up until around the second area (Ashes: Trial by Fire, at the fountain with the Grub Holes that keep popping up), I think the characters are fuppin' AWESOME. The video at the start of Ashes, in the gunship with that Colonal guy or whatever he is was brilliant; I loved it.

I like the gameplay, but I was feeling repetition only 2 levels into the game. Hiding, popping up, shooting, hiding again behind a convieniently placed wall (and seriously, theres ALOT around :| Why? I mean, apart from giving me cover, why so many, in places like corridors aswell?) But this is early days for me, being only at the second area-level-thing and against only one of the types of enemies, so I can't talk at all.

Very fun though, and my jaw was hitting the ground for alot of time, aswell as constant gibberings from me to my mate like ''Nick... this game... just wins'' and ''That was BEAUTIFUL! Chainsaw to the FACE!''

That's how I played before getting pretty decent multiplayer. It's here that you really get to learn the cool tricks - single player is alot less hide and cover now, especially with a mate in co-op.
