I've acquired quite an unhealthy body shape over the past years of being a lazy ****, and after a particularly inactive exam period have got more squidgy. To give you a perspective, I'm almost 6 foot tall and weigh 13 stone, and I'm not too bothered about my actual weight but my anti-masculine shape (wide hips, weak shoulders, getting quite a belly). I was wondering if any of you know the best way to combat this. My diet is quite poor - too unprepared to cook => takeaways often; sweettooth => eat a fair amount of sweet things.
I do quite like the food that I eat (although I know it's bad!), and am more prepared to do physical activities but could cut out the shite if neccesary. So what do you think? Would a 20 minute jog every day reverse the ballooning process?

Start with the diet. You know the problem, next step is fixing it. Eat alot of vegetables/fish etc..***n everyday and hit the weight room a few times a week....

Start slow and get yourself into a good routine

Oh God, here we go. Millions of solutions whereas a simple "eat proper food and exercise lots" would suffice.

I'm pretty much the same, but the last few months I've cut down the sweets and crisps and stuck to my sandwiches and better dinner meals. I've also been cycling to college and back (6 miles) aswell as doing 10 mile laps around my block/area, which has been helping vastly. I've gone from 100kg to 89kg in the last few weeks and I aim to keep that up non-stop until I get to 70kg. My body doesn't seem to have changed much in shape, but the scales say so, and my friends do say my face has gotten thinner haha, but we'll see.

I'll tell you this, though: Walkers Lite crisps are the DEVIL. I use to have them because I thought Lite wasn't so bad, but since stopping eating them I've decreased much faster.

Stop drinking coke/pepsi/pop/soda whatever you want to call it. I assure you, the "litre a cola" most people drink with their Big Mac's is probably more of a hinderance on their physique than they know.

The amount of soft drinks (again, primarily coke/pepsi type beverages) people consume is ridiculous.

Also, if you don't like the way you look, try wearing proper clothes. It's amazing what clothes can do for a person, regardless of body type. From my experience, don't wear t-shirts. Really skinny or fat people don't look good in t-shirts. I don't wear t-shirts because I'm pretty skinny and they look terrible.

i'd say the most important thing is working out and eating properly, you can then add cardio to that, jogging lightly until you've developed reasonable strength in your legs and lung capacity, after which you should try out guerilla cardio.

cut soda, cut chips/crisps, cut beer, cut white bread and go for wholegrain foods. you're cutting the good tasting sweet stuff because it got you the body you're in right now, the energy it contains in calories is way too high if you dont exercise. anyway, there's lots of tasty healthy stuff once you get into it. different fruits, wholegrain stuff, you can still eat plenty as long as it's healthy stuff that keeps you full longer.

www.johnstonefitness.com is a great and very motivational site, lots of information. http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=19229 the weight lifting schemes on that page are highly recommended, just get a pair of dumbbells with adjustable weights and you're set.

buy bananas and protein shakes to eat after working out, and eat alot of broccoli, it contains zink and increases testosterone levels. Try high fibre cereal for breakfast, it's great for the stomach.

QFT. I've lost about 50 pounds since January just by eating better, obeying portion sizes, and exercising. Do it the old fashioned way. I went from 215 lbs to 164, which is almost too light for me...that's 97kg to 76kg. I'm 6'1" tall.

Wear the slim fit kind of t-shirts, where the short sleeves that connect to your arms better. I don't know if they have a name, but it's better to emphasize skinniness rather than hide it in a big baggy t-shirt making you look like a total dork.

As for the OP and his sweettooth, try eating lots of (sweet) apples and bananas. I think they're great substitutes.

Find a sport you really like and make a push at it.

For instance, I hardly ever go to the gym anymore because I go swimming, climbing, play football, cycle. I don't mind the gym sessions but I prefer doing those activities over 20 min on the treadmill.

if you're into chocolate and you MUST eat chocolate, at least eat dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.

-Don't drink soda. Replace it with something else.

-Eat protein(2% Milk btw has a lot of protein, if you drink a lot of milk a day you will easily be able to hit 100% - 200% of your recommended needs. Will also help build bone.)

-No Fast Food, except on rare occasions(once a month).

-Exercise. Even if it's just walking 3 miles each day. Walking 3 miles each day was shedding easily a pound off of me a single day when I weighed quite a bit more. This is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. You can drink soda and east fast food, if you're active enough. You wont be shedding pounds as fast, and soda/fastfood are unhealthly for you.

No matter how healthy you eat and what diets you go on. Nothing is going to beat exercising.

Just about everyday after work you can find me practicing for Soccer at my local soccer fields. Sometimes I get off work at 9:30p.m. and i'm still out there.

Go to lively indoor gigs/clubs once a week with friends or just wild dancing at a party. The pounds'll drip off. It's more fun than exercise. :p

Ive been trying to convince myself to loose weight too. How good is swimming compared to jogging or other exercises? I absolutely can not stand sweating, so I think that would be my only option.

Getting Fit, losing Fat

LOL, well in my case I would actually have to gain weight to get fit. I would say my appetite is rather normal, but no matter how much I eat or how high in calories the food is I never seem to gain any weight.

My diet isn't all that healthy either although I do enjoy the occasional fruits and vegetables. Also I wouldn't exercise even if my life depended on it LOL.

Swimming's a great exercise and a excellent supplement to going to the gym. Whatever you do, you going to end up sweating, there's no way around this. If you don't you're just wasting you time.

gl, and get on that running machine!

I've gone on a diet and lost 45 pounds or so, but gained it all back. I'm now back on the diet I was on (I don't know why I ever quit), and I've lost about 12 pounds so far.

Here's what I do:
-Eat only meals. Don't eat anything in between meals. Its much easier to control your portions this way, and a good rule I picked up was to always eat while sitting down, and always eat something on a plate or in a bowl.

-As people said before, no soda. I drink diet soda, and I don't give a shit what people say about aspartame.

-write it down. I find that the number one way to eat right is to write down what you eat. Just carry around a little pocket journal and write down things like: "Breakfast: toast and a scrambled egg.." etc. This gets you to thinking about portions.

-Exercise. You can eat more this way, or expend much more energy. I ride my bike several miles a day, and sometimes go walking or running. You can also go to the gym and lift weights, or swim laps in a pool, whatever. The more you exercise and the less you eat, the more weight you'll lose.

-Drink lots of water. It keeps your stomach full and your digestion going. It also helps with your metabolic process.

-weigh yourself. I say weigh once a week, others weigh once a day. Weighing yourself keeps you motivated and lets you know when you're doing the right and wrong things. If you, for instance, gain a pound one week instead of losing, it will get you thinking about what you did to gain weight, and you can stop doing it the next week. And, if you lose much more weight than normal, you can find out what made you lose that weight and repeat it. In any case, weighing yourself makes you feel like its working, like you're actually doing something.

Well, I do wear slim fit clothing, but I can't see how it would be possible for a t-shirt to look good, regardless of the fit. I'd rather just wear slim-fitting polos and collared shirts.

For example, this polo: http://users.eastlink.ca/~mullinsg/tight.jpg

Thanks for all your help!
Got lots of good ideas from this thread within such a short time. Just got to try and break my pathological laziness! I imagine replacing snacky stuff with fruit, beer with wine and chips with rice will be my first steps.
Also, how much better than ordinary coke is coke zero? I actually prefer Zero but not sure whether it's all a sham.

-As people said before, no soda. I drink diet soda, and I don't give a shit what people say about aspartame.
Do not drink Diet Soda!
1.)It does absolutely nothing for you. You gain no nutrients besides a small amount of sodium from them. They also ruin your stomach. They provide no energy, nothing really.

-Eat only meals. Don't eat anything in between meals. Its much easier to control your portions this way, and a good rule I picked up was to always eat while sitting down, and always eat something on a plate or in a bowl.
I do the exact opposite. I eat small meals throughout my entire day. This keeps your metabolism running 24/7, and it is much easier on the body.

Coke Zero has zero carbohydrates. Carbs are energy. You do want carbs, however you want a certain kind of carbs based on your activity.(For example, eating Pasta the night before a big game. It'll give you a ton of energy for the game.)

In order to be healthy, you need energy.

what I gain is taste :farmer:

Well I mean, eat as many meals as you like, just don't snack continuously. If you eat many meals just make them small. What I'd used to do is just walk into the kitchen, grab some food and go into another room, and then on my way back I'd eat something else, and do all of this in addition to meals.
.

Over the past 6 or 7 months i have lost about 66 pounds. All i did was diet and exercise. Its as simple as that. I stopped eating fast food all together, and gave up soft drinks. I work out about an hour a day, then i upped it out of boredom to 1 and a half hours. Its really up to you how you wanna go through with it.

Well of course.

There are much more tasteful things that provide you with some nutritional value.

66 pounds, good stuff man ;)

my sister joined weight watchers, while some may scoff and think its too girly they have male only classes too. And they are hardly classes afaik, my sis just went each week, got weighed, then left, you just haveto follow the diet point system thingy, she lost a load of weight by doing it.

Thanks. Seriously, you feel a lot better about yourself afterwards (at least i did) especially seeing people you haven't seen in a while act all astonished when they see you. It makes me feel like i did something right for once.

As for diet sodas, i only drink them once in a while, i stick to water the most. Every so often i have a glass of orange juice or other 100% juices.

Remember, when you exercise, know your limit, don't put too much strain on yourself or else your body just collapses on itself.

Which is also why it's very important to get nutrients and have enough energy.

i gained 30 lbs in the past 3 years and im trying to lose weight by going to the gym every other day. i dun eat fast food and i dun go out to eat often. im only 5' 5" and weight 155 lbs... i have been trying out tshirts and they dun look nice on me until i tried shirts and polos shirts. anybody else have attire problems?

lol, I'm 6'4" here and weigh like 145 lbs D:

My body seems to be at a pretty good equilibrium there since I don't gain or lose weight at all.

Diet is the MOST important part of losing weight. Exercise is 2ndary.

Basically don't eat crap and exercise for an two or three hours a week, total.

Start smoking cigarettes. Your body will burn extra calories trying to rid itself of the toxins.

Thats such an expensive solution. I would need a much cheaper drug.

One important thing to realize though, is that it will take years for you to become very fit, and be very er.. fatless? Don't be discouraged by not having results from a few weeks or months.

It takes a while, but not always years. I've two friends that were alot bigger than me and now they've gone and done it again by becoming thinner than me in the space of 7/8 months. And I mean really thin, but you'd need to see what they were like before to see how impressive the change has been on those guys.

I'm guessing from what you said that your an unmotivated fatty? The best advice is to find a sport you enjoy and get into it, after a while you'll usually want to get better to match other people so you will have the motivation to eat right and get fit. There are lots of weight loss plans and other crap out there but all you need is a reason to lose the weight. So find a sport and get into it, the rest will follow.

Unless your to lazy to keep going with it, then you have a problem.

Very true.

Many psychological factors are involved in losing weight. Here are some tips:

-Focus on your successes, not your failures
-Have faith in yourself
-Be patient (very important)
-Self-Discipline is very rewarding
-Try to have fun. Like Robbo said, get into something you find fun. I love swimming, so i do that a lot. Time flies when your having fun.

Bikings a great way to shed the extra pounds. One of my favorite exercises fs. Unfortunately, I totalled my only bike a couple of years ago due to narrowly escaping certain death from oncoming traffic. If I still had my bike, that's definately what I'd be doing rather than jogging.

Also, your gonna have to lose the sweets if you want any kind of results at all. If nothing else, try to find some sweet alternatives such as fresh fruits and such, but if your serious about losing the lbs., well, natural sugars is still sugar.

I lost around 30 lbs. once from completely cutting out sugars because thankfully, I never really had a sweetooth problem. My weakness was, and always has been, starches. :(

I got lazy when I started college, and well, we're both in the same boat now!

EDIT> LOL, I just realized how old this thread is. :p
