Greatest GTA game of all time?

There was something great about the 2d versions that was in the move to 3D. The driving side of things for a start became less about the joy of tearing through a city, less of a game, and more of a way to get places. Not sure if that makes sense, but that's the way I found it. The original was a bit like Micro Machines, but in a massive city with cops and lots of guns. And you could play it over a lan - much time was lost playing GTA over my uni's network.

Old school.

Errm, it was a third person shooter?

San Andreas was my favourite.
GTA2 = awesome
GTA3 = crap.
Vice City = crap
Liberty City Stories = Enjoyable, but can be crap at times.

That's a good example of an unacceptable opinion.

What the ****, GTA2 rated higher than the new ones?

And you're just outright bashing 3 and VC? What the hell.

Old school.

That's not fair in this case. The series changed loads with GTA3. Obviously it improved a great deal in certain areas, but became less of a sandbox game along the way.

I'd love a new top down gta - think how cool it could look with today's technology. Little people walking about, factories spewing smoke and fumes, traffic jams, street battles - this little busy world with you in middle causing mayhem :)

That would be cool, a return to its roots with next-gen technology.

Stock response. ;)

Can't you go topdown in 3? Did they ever go topdown again with a next-gen GTA, they'd be totally panned from all corners of the globe.

The only GTAs I ever enjoyed playing were the ones with the overhead view. I can't stand the 3D ones. Ahh, the days when games were actually fun and not a tech demo.

Funny that, because GTA:SA looked pretty much identical to GTA3 (Liberty City), give or take. Not really quite sure what your on about here, but okay!

Probably. It'd still be fun.

Vice city is the best for me and is the only one i still play it had it all .Gta 3 was also good but San andreas was a disappointment sure it's bigger but the music, characters and story sucked

In terms of general story and aesthetic, Vice City.

In terms of gameplay and freedom, San Andreas. I just <3 planes and diving.

Grand Theft Auto
Great game, but damn difficult. The cops are damn tough and hard to shake. Cash and guns are a bit difficult to come by at times. Still, great game. Now, if only the tank could shoot outside of kill-frenzies.

Grand Theft Auto 3
Best story, best radio (Chatterbox FTMFW) and some damn satisfying gameplay.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Probably the most polished and all-round great GTA game. But I just never found it as satisfying as 3. Also, the FBI and army seem to be easier to avoid/kill in this game.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Has the best moments and features of the series. Great gunplay and the best vehicles of any GTA game (dogfights FTMFW). But the game just isn't as consistantly good. And the map is too damn big. Endless areas of nothing are just annoying.

As for the otheres, I haven't played them enough to judge.

Although VC is probably a better game, I'll vote 3 with 1 as second, because I've gotten the most fun out of those.

Good summary.

I love GTA...

Grand Theft Auto
I got this when it first come out, I was like 7 or something at the time. But I loved it so much. Very simple mostly, and was kinda hard to shoot and aim, but its was still a load of fun. I liked the radio too :)

GTA: London
Completed this in a day, but it was good fun. Didn't play this as much as the first though.

GTA 2
This was an awesome improvement over the original. Graphics were greatly improved and I loved the gangs system. Lots to do, tons of missions and weapons, loved driving round in the trucks :D. Radio was decent too.

GTA 3
Blew me away tbh. When I first played it I instantly fell in love with the setting. I think its my favorite city out of them all. Nice decent sized city with plenty to explore, even for the first 3D gta. Radio was awesome, Chatterbox with Lazlow ftw! :D I like the cars in this game too. Banshee, Mafia Sentinel, Yakuza car and some others. Trying to fly the dodo was fun too. Missions weren't bad either, and story was good.

GTA: VC
Good improvement on GTA 3, though I didn't like the setting as much as GTA3. Story was awesome though, and missions were awesome. Nice variety of things to do in the missions. Radio was ok, but I prefer GTA3's. Helicopters were a great improvement, loved them. I think I spoiled this game a bit by looking at all the media released for it. I aint doing that for IV.

GTA: SA
Didn't read up on this much, but I got it anyway being a GTA fan. Firstly, the map was way too big. I never learnt my way around properly and there was just too much empty space. Story was a bit meh tbh, missions were ok, but I lost intrest around the casino missions. radio wasn't as good as the previous two by a long shot. I didn't like how you had to eat and work out and stuff, I don't want to play the sims :) Did have its good moments though. I liked the helicopters, lots of them to fly, planes were ok but I don't really fly those much. Rest of the vehicles were good too, lots to choose from.

Overall... I'd say GTA 3 was my fave, then VC, then 1 and 2 then SA.
Looking forward to IV a lot. I hope its a lot more like 3/VC, and it looks like its shaping up to be like that.

IIRC, you can only go topdown in GTA3. It was never added for Vice City or San Andreas.

Anyone else remember the timer in the GTA 1 demo? I think you had 300-400 seconds of playtime before the game quit and you had to start it again :)

How in the ba-jingles did GTA3 have the best story? It wasn't very involving, you did little more than move from one gang to the other and there was never really much going on. I did enjoy the story, but VC's was so much better (even if the pacing was slightly off).

Maybe 3 had better missions than VC, but overall...

I haven't played a single GTA game. :| Bah, I shall try out 3 and VC.

ba-jingles - I'm going to remember that forever. :D

Does anyone remember that racing mission in Vice City where you have to go against some fat guy in a erm...fast car?

That mission took the biscuit and it took me many times to complete it. (After being on the brink of self-explosion)

300 seconds, I always ended up running north from the start to grab the SMG and the sports car, then I'd randomly drive around until the timer was over. Was great fun at the time :P

I only played GTA3 and Vice City. I guess I'd have to say Vice was better, but in a sense it didn't feel as revolutionary as GTA3. Come to think of it, GTA3 also has that great finale on the dam, and the deliciously mordant epilogue with the hero capping Maria, Hmmmm...

I finished it the second time after I cheated and ran him straight into a wall.

That was good, but I absolutely loved the Vice City ending. Truly one of the greatest game endings ever. It felt so right, so humbling and brought the storyline to a great close. And that music. Ahh, I need to play again.

Based purely on how much fun I had with them - probably a tie between 2 and 3. Vice City would come a close second, if only because it came after 3. Bikes = uber, though.

I remember that mission. Here's my trick for winning:
Just before you activate the mission, go into your club and throw a molotov/grenade into the dance-floor. You should get 3 starts, if not, get 3 stars. Then activate the mission.

If you're lucky, (Happened maybe 1 or 2 times out of 5 for me) as the mission starts a cop car will, hopefully, turn the corner around the corner and ram your opponent off the road which will send him into a spin. It may also hit you. If it does and if you handle it correctly you should be able to use it as a speed boost to get a head-start.

Also, the cops are likly to throw spike-strips on the road. If you can avoid them, they should cripple your opponent and they are easily avoided, if you have a good eye.

Then all you have to worry about is avoiding cops for the race.

Damn you guys suck! Depressing how many people have never player the GTA games before 3. You practically ignore the games before 3. Shame on you.

GTA2 by far brought me the most fun. It even had multiplayer built in, which was fun as ****.

Agreed. They were awesome.
They're also free so anyone who hasn't played them yet has no excuse not to!

J00 sux0r. Bringing in cops? Screw that, I just drove alongside him and shoved him into a wall. He crashed, i flew on ahead, he never caught up.

/EDIT My fave thing to do in Vice City was in the beginning, when you have to get the Cell Phone off the Chef. I would drive a car full speed at him, bail, and the car would roll forward and kill the Chef in the cutscene.

Awesome.

And I played GTA2. I remember standin' by lakes and watching cruisers dive into the water.

You guys all suck! I beat him the way he was supposed to be beaten. Pure driving skills. :P

But hey at least this wasn't as hard as the legendary Mafia race..

I have the collectors edition with all PS1 GTA games.

The story in SA is ridiculous. A gangster can get into a carrier a stole a fighter. Yet, he can shoot down other fighters with the stolen one. Gee. A gangster is better than well-trained soldier?

The trick to beating Hilary in the race is simply doing it in good weather. The car they give you (a standard Sentinel, IIRC) sucks and you'll have a hell of a time cornering on a rain-slicked road.

I still say the absolute king of frustrating GTA missions is "Gripped" in GTA3. It's the one where you have to collect checkpoints while driving a Hummer up an seemingly sheer rockface. Took me three days and some major heartbreak to complete.

The two Vice City mission in which you race a crotch rocket across rooftops could be frustrating too, but nothing touches "Gripped."

Two things kept Vice City alive for me long after I'd completed it: The Bloodring, in which I managed a 22 miunte personal best and The "VC Endurance" race. Blasting through the town in a stock racer listening to Minor Threat one the radio was killer diller.

You're not the only one. Wow, that was a bitch. Almost as bad as the one in the park.

Ah yes the all mighty "gripped". I struggled for an entire afternoon to exactly map out the path and order of rings I should take.

But the hardest mission I have ever played is the checkpoint race in an old WW1 type plane in SA. That bloody plane wont even fly straight!

Because a game cannot strive upon swearing, doing drugs and using pistols alone, or would you of preferred that? **** that, I want fun, and the Harrier was the best fun I had in that game.
