Half life ... THE MOVIE!!!

I think I get what you mean Shift. The movie would have to explain everything since the non-game audience won't know what's going on.
I really think a unique story is do-able though. There may be references to Gordon as the man who rallied the citizens, but generally the story would be completely unique. A unique set of characters with personality, a conflict which challenges our characters, such as a notice of relocation/seperation which these close friends cannot take without a fight, or a sickness starts to effect the citizens but it's all an experiment(a bit cliche perhaps).. point is the movie would only use the setting of the game..
But you're right, there would have to be some exposition to give the viewer a sense of where they are.. but that's what movies do, if done well..

No, come on- The bit at the beginning of half-life where it goes subject, age, etc... just have that bit at the beginning of the movie, some other introductory bits, and that's all the explaining that'll be needed, except for the actual plot of the movie.

Yeah that is what i meant polypod ;)

I suppose you could make a Half-Life movie as a unique storyline related to the story we play, just so long as things are well explained at the beggining

Thats what would work the best, it'll be near impossible to follow the story of Freeman and still get a good movie, you'd need Jesus to make that movie

"Dude, do you really want me to make that film fo' you?"

films do badly with little dialogue

What? How? Movies with endless dialogue are usually quite boring and uneventful. It's just to wordy and mucky. I'm not saying like a line every 20 minutes, I'm just saying more visuals than spoken word. That is how films become successful.

Dude, you guys talk about movies set in the game universe yet not following the game storyline, those sorts of movies are generally mediocre. Half-Life without Gordon is like Doom without hell. You'd have to have the movie about Gordon.

And before anyone asks, who cares if he has to speak, as long as its in context with what's going on, its no problem.

Half-Life without Gordon is not Half-Life. Hmmm, right, Barney Calhoun and Adrian Shephard, not to mention Collette Green and Gina Cross agree with you.

I think a Half Life movie would be better without Gordon Freeman. Obviously he should be mentioned here and there as he is the main character but it just wouldn't work due to him being a complete mute.

You wouldn't have him talk, and because he can't talk, you wouldn't really make him the main character.

EDIT: You still can, of course.

It could be an artistic film.

That solves the Gordon-not-talking problem :p

The movie should have Gordon as the main character and yeah he would talk! He doesn't talk in the game you say? So what, the movie doesn't have to be exactly like the game it would be ridiculous if it was.:dozey:
I can see it now: Ep 3 Gordon braking boxes for an hour.:|

I think a HL film would be great if it wasn't about Gordon and could be cannon, revealing some major plot points. I'm still amazed that even though they have proffesional writers on staff there has been no HL novel.

I think the only way to go about a half life movie would be to start it with flashes of the black mesa events with commentry from Gman or somebody, sort of like the beginning to half life 2 and episode one. Then show life in a city or small town people just living their normal lives, maybe Freeman being mentioned here and there. Then sometime in the middle of the night the combine's citadels are teleported here and the war begins before the humans knew what had hit them. Quite a long battle, maybe half an hour or so in the film ending in the surrender of Breen and the Combine victory. For a little while after that showing some of the citizens in city 17, survivors from the war and previous scenes being the sort of main characters. Then news of Freeman returning and the rebels rebellion followed by the destruction of the citadel. Finally evacuating the rebels and the final blast to finish the movie. It would be quite a long film, not quite lord of the rings length, more harry potter or pirates of the carribean. Gordon freeman should be seen in the hazard suit from time to time like running across a bridge above the characters in the background etc. it should also include the main characters such as Ely, Kleiner, Alyx (not often though), Mossman and Barney should play a main part. If the director was a fan and studied the game well i think he/she might just be able to pull it off without ruining the entire idea of the game.

How about a massive porno with gordon and alex in a mouldy old bed in the wrecked city?

I'd buy it..

"Oh Gordon! Use that gravity gun and bring me those cucumbers...ohhh yes...mmmm...Use that stunstick now..mmmm...oh oh oh, SHOOT YOUR SHOTGUN allll over my face.."

Yeah, pefrect.

Kleiner walks in,
"WTF HAX0rz!!!"
Alyx: ":O"
Gordon: "MONKEYS!"
Squirt.

I sure hope this porno doesn't take place in Ravenholm, do you know how many STD's you'd get from that bed? Headcrabs Disease, yuck!

A Half-life movie. How dumb. Movies can be turned into games easily but games can not be turned into movies fullstop.

hey dumb ass...the movie DOOM was originaly a game then they made it into a movie

hey dumb ass... it sucked.

What the hell did you resurrect this thread for, anyway? to show us how stupid you are?

They tried WAY too hard with Doom, and honestly, the original Game (doom 94) was freaking sweet, I STILL play it!

If it was a half-life film & there was no Gordon then they wouldn't name it "Half-Life" they would have to name it something else like Black Mesa or anything imaginary.

IF there is ever a Half-Life movie & Valve is involve you can bet your ass that GORDON FREEMAN will be in it. ;)

Also I would like to say, Most of the games that were turned into movies sucked because they're main character was not in it. The Doom movie for example, Instead of having this quiet lone wolf marine that arived on mars alone & surives the whoel thing & takes on demons & big gaint 90 feet tall monsters from hell(the bosses like cyber demon) & survives the whole damn fiasco. Alot of characters where missing like Dr. Betruger(if he were in it Anthony Hopkins could've been in it) that eventually made a pact with the devil, Sergent Kelly, etc. Instead of having the main character in it they put a handfull of marines & instead of a teleportation experiment that had the stupid extra cromosome...instead of having demons from hell.

Dr. betruger? That means traitor or liar in german..just with an ü instead of u XDDDD What a cheap joke

Well really, I don't know what more could've been expected out of the Doom movie. I'd say it's one of the better game-to-move translations.

Anyone expecting a story out of Doom is playing the wrong game/watching the wrong movie.

Both the game and the movie were about dark environments, monsters jumping out of those dark environments, and people with big guns taking out said monsters. That's all I expected out of watching the movie and that's what was delivered. I don't see how it could be called a bad movie in that respect. Were you guys expecting this thing to get an award for best writing or something?

Guns, Mars, monsters. Movie delivered. Also, "I'm not supposed to die!"

Not to mention a weirdly pointless section where all you saw was the guys' hands, his gun, and presumably some cries of pain and hatred, supposedly from monsters but most likely from the audience.

I just felt that if you're gonna base a movie on Doom you can at least follow what little story there is, instead of make some sort of weird hybrid between the doom-story and the story the producer wanted to do.

Don't be so hard on them for it. It was intended to give appreciation to gamers and the way FPS is.

That's the thing, though - I don't feel Doom does deliver on monsters, guns and action. It's rather pedestrian.

A dumb action movie with cardboard characters but lots of exposions isn't such a bad thing. It just doesn't work if the explosions are crap.

But they didn't pull it off. I mean, it's admirable and all, but it just made for a shit movie.

I think if you make the half life and make it into a movie you would have to make a LOT of movies to cover what the hell it is about. Firts you would have to make a movie explaining what Black Mesa is all about and then explain whoall the people are. and who the hell the gman is. and then you would have to show about everything went wrong and over turned. that already would be a 2 1/2 hour movie. then you got to show how gordon freeman got to the top layer of black mesa and then to xen *which i think if was ever in a movie should be cut out...frankly too sci-fi for me haha* anyways then BACKKKKKKK HOME....and that is only half life 1!! in the second one they would have to show HOW everyone got rounded up and shipped away! and then you will have to show how ppl basically got over turned to run for this governemtn!...i think it would be better as a...non fps movie..and a non sci-fi...like it would be more of a drama with guns type thing? haha like dont base the movie all on headcrabs.

my rant is done haha..

my final word is Doom the movie ruined Doom for me as i know it. Come on...the ROCK? as an action hero? come on! when he went past the scorpion king is ruined it for me! then he goes on to be Doom...WOW

Wohoo! I want a movie, I want a movie!
Oh, don't listen to me, people are right, no need in spoiling stuff with Hollywood interpritation of the game. BUt I want a movie! Hey, there, Valve, if you hear me, girl-fans want a movie! I wanna know, who will play the key role. And where in the world they will find an actress, as nice, as Alyx? But if the movie will be done and it will.. you know what it will do, if it is bad enough, I will :hmph: eat the director of the film alive!
