halflife2.net: Art contest #1 - DISCUSSION

Yes! You can use whatever means, paint, photoshop, drawing, anything. As long as you press the buttons yourself :P. Filters are allowed, but I wouldn't just use filters because you probably (definitely) won't win. I assume you can use characters, screenshots from Half-Life2, as long as you took them yourself, and as long as they have relevance. But remember, the less orginal/creative it is, the less likely you're going to win

i know. Ive got a pretty good idea of what im gonna do though

yeah, but can i use photoshop?

Course you can. Doesn't matter what you use, so long as everything in the final image you submit is all your own work.

There's basically no limits, its not a contest to see how good you are at drawing.

Anything surreal, that somewhere in the image contains an eyeball and a pencil... But thats not as easy as you might think.. you can't just put an eyeball and a pencil into some picture without any thought to it. Surreal or not.

Should hopefully result in quite a few interesting images. If this one goes well I'll setup more in future.

Hopefully less obscure ;)
What would you prefer, something loose where you can stretch your imagination, or something strict and boring where everything will end up the same?

That was a rhetorical question btw :)

ok, i get the point. Im not gonna steal the Mona Lisa and say that i did it. :hmph:

Just to ask... for the competition, if the image size is really big and is more than 100kb, can you put it full size on imageshack, then scale it down when attaching it at the bottom of the post? It's only for referance right, so it doesn't need ot be the same size?

I think that is what he said.

Nice to see there are so many people who entered. I think giving interesting theme AND quite long time to work on the piece attracts lots of talented people. Can’t wait to see what everybody comes up with.

does it have to be an EYEBALL, i think the eye looks nicer when coated in a nice set of flesh and eyelashes to boot

Can it be a half mechanic, half-organic eyeball? :D

I can´t see why it could´nt be. :)

This is actually harder than I thought it would be. I´ve never done anything like this before, but its turn out to be fun and quite challenging ecperience, at least for me :P

wish I had the time to enter this :/
all the entries I've seen are pretty good so far, looking forward to the judging :)

No, it must be an EyeBALL, as said by TDE already :), so therefore, it could be attached to the face, but must be fully visible.

This has been a good turn out. Seems everyone is getting into the spirit of the contest, coolies :D

Asshats.
It's no good - can't resist. Started on something but won't officially enter the competition until I know for sure it will be finished on time :P
And no sketches cos I usually make it up as I go, sorry...

Just a reminder, you all have until 11:59pm GMT on the 17th To enter your final images.

I may not be able to do it, if so, I will withdraw my entry

Well the contest is now closed.

Voting will commence when Dark Elf tells me just what has was planning to do :D

My fave is cremator's as it featured ladies being hung up and tortured (like another certain entry :P). Plus it just looks so damn mysterious... why are they taking her eyes? did they even ask permission first? and what is that strange thing in a cloak to the right? and oh god i just can't get over how cool a female assasain looks.

*EDIT* Just to say... will farrow be hosting the art contest from now on? If everyone's individual threads were replaced with one giant thread to post artwork it would be a lot easier to manage... I mean if we just did the same as the previous art contest but gave people a longer time to enter i'm sure it would be great :D

now i really, REALLY am going to bed now.

I think its better with individual threads for WIP images, its easier to follow. You can at a glance see if someone has replied about your entry, instead of going through a bunch of posts about other people's if you didn't want to. Also means you can, if you felt like it, not look at the other entries until you'd finished yours. So again there's a choice there.

Besides, as the contests (if they continue) move on, they'll get harder as more people enter, and more talent begins to appear. Also those threads were only moved to the main section, there's nothing stopping you from continuing to post in them with new images, say if you felt like doing more work on an entry, or a new version of it. It wouldn't be part of the contest, would just be for the enjoyment of it. The method works well elsewhere and should here too.

So out of curiosity does anyone have any idea's for the next contest? There's already a few in mind, just curious if anyone actually cares still? :p

how about drawing a junkyard? its harder than it sounds.

or you could give us two seemingly harmess objects and have us combine them!
presented is a robot/windmill:

Oh well, I´ll finish what I´ve started anyway. I think I took the surrealism thing too seriously and just didnt like the way it would have turned out. :/
gah, I really have some trouble on voting..I really like yours. The amount of detail and texture on it is just simply stunning!!1
