halflife2.net: Art contest #1 - DISCUSSION

IF no-one minds i'll make another contest here :D

if it wasn't official would you guys still enter it? I'm enthusiastic to make a contest. It wouldn't be as strict as the one before, and would instead welcome more "sketchy" drawings as well as masterpeices. So what d'ya say? ready for round two?

Now that there's no-one who is actually going to moderate the contests forum (i'm presuming none of the other mods can be bothered? lol) Is it OK if we can make our own contests here? Maybe as well as an "unofficial" art contest, people could make their own "mini" contests that have no closing date and instead just involve people posting sketches relating to the topic :)
this section will become a mess now there's really nobody to do the art contest. You could see if Hotsoup is interested or Zerimski, other than that I dunno. Doing your own it'll be unruly and just spammed to hell, you'd have no way of enforcing the rules and not to mention you can't make a poll correctly if a lot of people enter beyond the max number of poll entries. Sparrow was gonna take over it for me until he decided to quit, qck left before he could be asked.. Seems the art contest is cursed and that anyone connected to it doesn't stay a mod for long, so I ain't even asking bliink if she wants to do it, you should ask crushenator though LOL :p

It's a good thing i'm not a mod here then, isn't it

2 threads...

And personally i don't think it will become a mess... i mean the kind of people who post on the art forum are mature anyway, you don't get many spammers here. All it would need is a tiny amount of moderating, which crush could provide if he was given moderation access to this forum (which i personally think is a great idea).

there's only two threads cause of the method the contest would have been done if it had continued. If it keeps going like that it could be fun, otherwise there's little point even having this section if its just gonna be done like the old "do something HL2 related" competitions from before.

Your method of doing the art contest was a lot better, but what's so bad about the old art contest? We still had the same amount of entries, and the same (obvious) winners. Even the unoficial ones sparked a fair response. Who's to say that now no-one is moderating this sub-forum, it shouldn't be allowed to flourish, with a mod keeping an eye on it?

I, for one am interested.

if no mods will make the contest, suicide can do it no probalo.

Well if your confident you can run it properly and keep a tight reign on it, and provide prizes like I planned to then go for it and good luck. Just remember its not as easy as it looks, and unless Munro makes you a mod, your gonna need a supermod or a section moderator to edit the polls depending on entries, to remove cheats, to enforce the rules, re-edit the rules/contest post, move old entry threads when the contest closes and to keep spamming down to a minimum. Also you'd be expected to watch the other art sections too (in the case of being a mod) and keeping that neat and tidy was a lot of work, but hey, it paid off, it was the best kept section IMO, had myself and Sparrow watching over it. Merging threads, fixing titles, fixing posts that weren't displaying images correctly for new users, moving only the best threads into the showcase section.

PM Munro and ask him to make you a mod of the section so you can keep it going, otherwise its just gonna fall apart as its effectively being ignored now.

I still say go for it :D. It would certainly be a waste to leave it like that. I'll help whatever way I can (around my coursework which I suddenly remembered I have to do ) and think that if we can "persuade" a couple of mods to help, then it would run really smoothly.
In addition to this, if we manage to do a couple successfully, maybe we could make Munro see the light and actually do something about this instead of ignoring us (as do most people, or was that only since I came :P)

Personally if i was granted mod powers to the forum, i would make sure it was kept under tight watch... and if that means checking it every half an hour by alt-tabbing out of whatever program i'm using so be it... but munro doesn't just hand out mod powers, you must be "chosen" hehe :) It would be a lot easier just for crushenator to be granted mod powers here, I talk to him a lot and i could send him links to the pages that i think need moderating, plus bliink keeps a close eye on the forum (i think).

Well I think you should be made a mod. If you haven't noticed there's hardly any mods around lately. It would be difficult on Crushenator to make him moderate another section. As for bliink, check her posts, she's basically the only mod who's around half the time, doing the work that myself, qck and Sparrow would have been doing, along with the mods that aren't even available most of the time, when I wanted her to replace me, I didn't exactly have in mind her replacing the whole moderating alone part too. :(

There should be atleast two regular moderators per section, each one in largely different time zones eg: 1 US 1 UK, so there's always one available for most of the time, and a supermod watching his or her own section. Less work for each mod, and more keeping the forum clean in general. The current number of mods are only around 40% of the time because they can't be expected to all sit up 24 hours a day, or have school or work. So making the ones already around moderate even more is going to have a negative effect on the forum as a whole.

It's also not fair on them and a bit of new blood never hurt anyone :)

Edit: I also think Sparrow should be rehired, I don't completely believe he really wanted to quit, and that it was just "one of those moods" I've had countless times before (I've quit tons of times that nobody knew about cause Hotsoup suggested I think about it for a couple of days first) hehe

Well i would be happy to be an art mod- i mean i am fully prepared to constantly check the forum and keep the art contest up and running. It would be fairly ironic really... seeing as the art contest is the only reason i got involved in HL2.net in the first place. But like you said it would be far better to just re-employ farrow, he is very experienced and he probally only needed a break :P Plus it's not up to us anyway, despite the mod team losses, they seem fairly confident that the site can be maintaned.

Vote for Suicide!!! He's suicidal!!!! :D I support you fully, my friend  ( as long as you dont warn me too often :P )

If you break the rules your gonna get warned :p And crying to Munro to get rid of warnings surely can't last very much longer cause its got way out of hand with people using it to get rid of warnings, its like some wallhack in CS:S, abused hehe. There should be a 1 point warning that people get everytime they complain about getting a regular warning. That would cut trouble making and spamming down :)

This gives me an idea. We should have a HL2.net election! We could vote for different candidates to become mods! Candidates could think up diabloically subversive political campaigns! It would solve your 'skeleton crew' problem and be fun as well. :D

Sound like a great idea, though the elected people should only have a term for like a month at most, and can be instantly 'impeached' if you will by a regular mod.

It would be fun, but not very sensible. Suddenly someone would come along and post "VOTE CYBERSH33P BECAUSE HE EASTS BABIES" or something, and everyone would just vote for the comical option. Would YOU entrust the safety if this forum to it's regular members? Thought not!

you do ?

In the mod forums i take it ??

Whenever a normal member mentions the mod forum in a thread (apart from in the site forum), you should back away slowly as you know the thread has gone too far. Run... the men in suits will be coming for you now...

What mod forum? It's just a stupid conspiracy theory. And don't get me started on that ridiculous 'staff writer forum' myth...

/me whistles innocently.

I'd vote for sh33p any day. He's a sheep with a chainsaw ffs, who wouldn't?

there is a slight problem with that plan; elections are for democracies! Muahahaha!

Well HL2.net is by no means a communist site, as that would mean all members would be equal, and the post count / warning levels / differension in moderating powers would be contradicting that.

And the site is also not a dictatorship, as Munro shares his burden with selected indaviduals, who form a broad team of qualified and mature "watchers"- instead of one person forcing a reign over the site with strict rules and no exceptions.

Which leaves one option- a democracy. And as crushenator stated earlier- the mod team are in favour of votes and discussions, but they simply restrict the general members from having a say in the very important matters (just like the later stages of our parliment system). All the important matters (which regard the site as a whole) are discussed with the forum (such as the site layout). And as for elections... Who knows? in a year it will be time for the general election, and all the current mods could be thrown out of power in favour of completely different ones, leaving only the king (munro) who doesn't actually do anything.

:D

sorry made me laugh did that one ;)

sowwy Munro :E

bliink said:
"selected individuals" you mean.. henchmen? :P

And henchwomen

btw TDE, I never actually said how large that burden was.
...Actually I did in the last part...

sowwy munro :D We're only joking.

It would effectively be a republic I think, with Munro being the "Supreme-Chancellor" :D

Now we're talking politics! Remember, guys and gals, in politics NOBODY is innocent :P

It's funny how close you people are getting to the themes of the HL2.net Comic: The Sequel that I'll be working on once my GCSEs are finished...crap, I didn't just say that. Forget what you saw!

Forget what you read would be more exact :P Anyhow, I really think Suicide have what it takes to be a good mod for the Art section.

So you keep saying, but it'll take more than words to convince Munro

You'll have to shout really loudly. He's deaf in one ear.

I meant, Munro doesn't give everyone modship does he?
