Halo 3

hmmmmm, not opening the copy of halo3 that's sitting on my desk right now until friday is going to be hard!
a few friends of mine want to play through the campaign on legendary, but we wont all be able to play together until friday night... and i really want to share the experience of playing for the first time with them.......
doubt i'll last tomorrow without playing though... just one little peek shouldn't hurt :p

Impressed so far. I'm not the best FPS player out there, but Normal is providing a surprising challenge. It seems to be less run and gun than Halo 2 was.

I stopped before the first level with the Flood though. I hate the Flood.

I agree about theatre - that is so awesome. I replayed my single 15 minute game of Territories from all sorts of POV. It was great to see how stupid some of my deaths were.

The Saved Films are brilliant. I've uploaded 2 clips and a picture to File Share, the latter in which AmishSlayer will enjoy. ;) But please go and download if you can, and do any of you have any uploaded yet? Mine aren' anything special but y'know, it's the thought eh? :D

http://www.bungie.net/stats/Halo3/FileShare.aspx?gamertag=Beskhu3epnm

Let's get some of our own ridiculous things filmed! Mine are pretty silly actually haha.

So far, anyway...

Campaign

It's pretty good, much better than Halo 2 anyway and as Cormeh said, it's given me a run for my money a few times, too. I've ran out of ammo a few times and I can't bear to burder a Marine with a shitty plasma rifle so I don't take their weapons. But yeah, it's becoming everything Halo 2 should of been after we saw that E3 video a few years back, what with all the emphasis on the environments, detail, marines (such as wounded marines, as well as having a **** load on your screen fighting at the same time) and so forth. I'm enjoying it, anyway. Just about to enter Voi, gonna continue later.

Online

Just as addicting and downright fun as it was for Halo 2. Many months are going to spent playing this with close friends. Isolation is a pretty damn fun map, when the battle isn't taking place in the left hand side caverns, tbat is. Sandtrap is just winner, though. I was racking up so many kills as a warthog gunner yesterday on Territories. I'd like to play some CTF on there so we can get the full use of the Elephants in swing. Solid gaming, Bungie have done it again.

Forge

I can't get enough of it, to put it simply. It's just so amazingly done. I know map editing isn't exactly a new thing, but to be able to do it on the fly whilst playing a 8 v 8 CTF, assisting people there and then or hindering them, is mindblowing. I've been going over the maps taking out EVERYTHING then saving them as basic templates, then getting to work on them. Last night I made a gametype called Predator, on Sandtrap, where the humans start at the crashed dropship and have to make there way to a broken down convoy in the middle of the map, consisting of two abandoned Elephants and some crashed warthogs, whilst an invisible, sword weilding Predator spawns at the Covie scarab and has to pick them off. Radar is off, to make it more scarier. A selection of weapons and ammo is laid out at the Elephants in a previous-battle like manner, with overturned crates and stuff depicting a scene of ambush. Unfortunatly, when I started the game in Custom Games to give it a walkaround, the Elephants spawned in the original places for some reason. :( That sucks.

But yeah, enough rambling. I can see myself having LOTS of fun in this. Zombies/Infection type games are going to be fantastic.

Saved Films

Again, a simply fantastic option. I played a fair share of online games last night (about 10) but I spent the most of the noon and evening just watching and editing stuff. Theres nothing better than swooping down on a battle and pausing it, then going up close to see the point where the one fatal battle rifle rounds throws a guy from the back of a Mongoose. Like I said, I've got two pretty funny clips on my page that I rather enjoyed - more of a test, to see how it works, and as examples - but I can't wait to get some really proper amazing stuff films.

Warbie, honestly now, did you expect to be saying any other shooter is better than a Halo game this year :p?

tbh, after the let down that was Halo 2's campaign, I did :p

I've only played the first 3 levels in Halo 3 and they've each been far better than anything in Halo 2. Especially the second level - i've gone through it about 4 or 5 times now and on each occasion the encounters have been very different.

The new equipment adds an awesome depth to the single player - i'm especially liking the invincibility and shield bubble. You can burst through choke points, take more risks. Equipment adds even more options to a game which has always enjoyed more variety in combat than anything else.

Having only experienced the first few levels i'm not going to rate the whole game, but so far it's been great.

Having finished the campaign, I can say that by and far it's pretty awesome. Except for the entirety of mission 8. **** you, flood (also, the messages from Gravemind and Cortana on consequent play-throughs get reeeeeally old reeeeally quickly). Also, the final mission was a little meh in places, but I wouldn't call it a dissapointment, and it certainly wasn't as horrid as people have been making out.

The equipment is great and adds a good amount of depth to multi. Especially love when someone pops down a bubble shield and I rush at em with a gravity hammer. You can just see them going "ohshitohshitohshit" :D

Oh, and my fileshare's in my sig if anyone wants to take a look. Nothing too outstanding, just a few kills I was pretty proud of at the time :p

Theatre mode is so ****ing awesome! Any game after Halo 3 that doesnt include something similar automatically fails.

Well the ability to demo a game and then have free reign to watch anything that was happening during said game isn't exactly new. Granted Halo 3 has tools more suited to the task but nothing mind boggling imo.

Obviously. It's exciting because it's not relegated to a set of console commands, and because all the tools to share the files are built into the game.

It's the tools you mention and how user frienedly theatre mode is that makes it so great. There's no need for external apps and everyone with Halo 3 can create and share.

I've been making demos in fps for years and it's never been nearly this much fun.

I just don't understand why people find making demos and "omg I pwned that guy" movies fun at all. Especially considering 10,000 people are going to make a movie with the exact same thing happening. Hell skill videos just piss me off. Just seems like a completely useless feature to me.

I'm more excited about its application for single player runs. There have been very few single player fps i'd consider worthy of recording (most are fun to experience first hand but not to watch) and all the demos i've made and seen over the years have been of online fps for gathering tactics etc.

//edit

Edge give Halo 3 10/10 (Metroid Prime 7/10, ET:QW 8/10, Lair 3/10 XD)

The total lack of compromise in each and every single detail is breathtaking. Everything works with precision, everything is set up the same way, every barrier within reason has been lifted, and you never need to do any of it alone. Halo 3 was built to be used, built to be shared, built to be loved and build to last. It's a safe bet that it will still be enjoyed by a thriving community years from now. In substance it's nothing new, merely a magnificent, beautiful monster of a fps sequel. In concept and execution, though, Halo 3 is the future.

Did you mean the picture of your long-range melee or one of your video clips? :p

So far I've only recorded and uploaded a little clip of me getting a silly mongoose splatter. I was just messing around in Valhalla towards the end of a game of territories our team had already won. I took the mongoose off the center man cannon, landed clipping the ground, did a couple rolls and landed RIGHT on a guy right side up, tearing ass away.

I had a couple disappointments in the campaign (level 8 on Legendary by myself is not something I would wish upon anybody and there was still some plot points that bugged me), but the times I was wow'ed and completely satisfied with the battle that had just ended far outweighed these.

One example is when fighting the scarab in the desert area. I took the chopper (I <3 this vehicle so much) with my coop buddy standing on top of the front (his tank had been blown to bits) off a ramp and crashed down right into the battlements of the scarab, tearing through the brutes defending it and knocking them off as I slid to a stop. My friend had died the moment we hit the ramp and I watched his body fly way past the scarab. He had to jealously watch me as I had fun clearing the scarab, taking down the core and tearing ass away as it exploded.

I think the scarab fights were my favorite and most memorable parts of the game by far. They were infinitely more satisfying than the one stupid scarab in Halo 2.

I'm still on the fence about multiplayer. I have to play with with people I know for it to be a lot of fun. When I just play matchmaking I get annoyed. It still bugs the hell out of me that there isn't a server browser for custom games at the very least and that I HATE that I can't simply jump on live and play some CTF if I want. I have to go to the stupid team skirmish and wade through a bunch of other gametypes I don't like and when I finally get CTF, it's on some retarded map that isn't suited for CTF at all.

The forge is a lot of fun with people you know. We were knocking rockets around, making massive piles of fusion and plasma coils and piling on vehicles, having mongoose driver/rocket launcher passenger 2v2 races. We tried to mongoose joust with the passengers using hammers in the center lane that goes through sandtrap, but the hammer doesn't work on the back of the mongoose :( We didn't try the warthogs, but I have a feeling the hammer doesn't work in a vehicle period.

Did you mean the picture of your long-range melee or one of your video clips? :p

That wasn't me that got the kill, but regardless, it's ridiculous how noobified the lunge melee is. Needs to be toned down.

Also, I agree about the abilty to search games. About 10 mins ago, we got out of a Team Tactics game (which is very good if it's not Snipers) on The Pit, which is a shit map for snipers. After it ended we were about to play Valhalla as a standard weapons match. It would of made sense if the two game types had been swapped around to suit the map. But noooo, then everyone goes a vetoes it and we're playing Team Tactical Snipers on f'in High Ground, which is just as bad! :hmph:

I would just like to say, i'm not a fanboy of any particular franchise, or platform, but i will admit that i did enjoy the original Halo very much.

1. I can't see what people are complaining about graphically speaking. I must admit to being a complete whore when it comes to PC graphics, but i think Halo 3 looks great. Maybe not "omfg crysis makes me wee myself" great, but very pleasing to the eye all the same.

2. the levels are far, far better than Halo 2, and so very much less tedious. So much more cover, and so many more contours in the terrain.

3. loving the ridiculously large choice of weapons !

So far, really enjoying it.

I've really changed my mind about the graphics after playing for a while aswell. Technically it isn't astounding, which is what people tend to focus on as it's what you mention immediately (and of course in screenshots). But, in motion, it's pure eye candy at times. The other day, zooming around in a warthog on the third mission, brute choppers circling all around me, my gunner picking them off one by one as stunning explosions lit up on all sides of me, a plasma turret pelting me from afar sending luminous purple pellets of doom raining down upon me, and I suddenly think... **** me, this looks good. And this is just on my pissy 19" LCD.

More than anything else, it's the colour. And the brightness! Such things you don't see in good looking games anymore. Gears of War? Incredibly detailed textures, stunning shaders and lightning, totally unmatched for it's time. And all on a colour palette completely composed of greys and blues (more or less). Bioshock? Even moreso, and undoubtedly won't be outdone in terms of pure graphical splendour and art direction for ages. But it's so dark! I'm not saying these make them look worse than Halo 3, but it's such a nice change of gears to actually be able to see everything, and to fully appreciate it.

Anyway, this has somehow turned into a rant...

TL;DRers: It looks good.

I'm having trouble finding the skulls. I know where they all are because I watched a Youtube guide, but some of them don't appear at all. They're just... not there. I'm playing on normal, so I'm wondering if you have to play it on a harder difficulty to get some of them, but that seems a little silly and I haven't found any mention of it.

I think you only get the gold Skulls on Legendary, or possibly Heroic as well. I forget which of those two difficulties I'm playing on, but I found the Iron skull completely by accident in the first level :p

Also, what Bad^Hat said. The brightness, art style, and the quality HDR make the game look great despite its technical shortcomings.

Yeah, I was watching the video before level 8 and, apart from a few character models, theres just something really gorgeous about the visuals. This is no decider to my thoughts on the game whatsoever (although I think it's great) but I think graphically it looks awesome.

I played some system link today and it was AWESOME. The best game we did was on Valhalla, gravity hammers and rockets with 50% gravity and 200% speed. INSANE. I can't wait to go over the saved films tonight with that. My mate deflected a rocket with the hammer so that'll be cool to clip.

You only need to be playing on normal mode or above to find the gold skulls, but sometimes certain conditions have to be met. Also, I'm fairly certain you have to start from the beginning of each mission to find them, as whenever I've tried to go from checkpoints they haven't been there.

Check out these pages for instructions and videos on all the skulls - Gold and Silver (the final silver skull has just been located, it's meant to unlock hidden dialogue throughout the campaign... sounds extremely complicated to get though)

I'm going to start putting more time into this game, but if anyone wants to join they are free to do so.

Dang flood.

Couple screenies from a particularly fun match the other night...

BadHat vs. Banshee:

BadHat vs. Plasma nade (losing :p):

Nice pics :)

I was playing ctf with my mates on that level last night and it was the most fun i've had in ages. I really didn't think any game could drag me away from TF2, but this has managed it. I'm also hopelessly addicted to Slayer Duel. 2 vs. 2 hasn't been this good since Golden Eye!

Just Finished the Fight last night.

What an amazing story. I thought it took somewhat of a backseat in Halo 2, but in 3 its as good as ever.

Finished it too, last night. I'm going to my grandma's today to play on Live. I might play some co-op on legendary, or maybe just some mutliplayer.
Add me..
I'm.. Acepilotf14. oh, the IRONY!

I've been looking for some good co-op. I'll add you and see if your on later today.

Quick question guys - is it possible to set up a game with the map and gametype of your choice and for random people to join? I've been playing tonight with a few mates, hoping to team up against other guys, and these things seem to be picked randomly - automatically filling up the roster untill full (we want 4 v 4, not 5 v 5) and picking the map etc for us, which sucks. We can set these things up in a custom lobby, but can't seem to open them to the public. Also, push to talk is utter crap! Surely there is a way to turn that off.

Nope, they've gotta be invited/join your game from your friends or recent players list. Or, someone else's who's also in the game. If you know a couple of people who are usually around and willing to start a game you can fill it up pretty fast that way, as long as everyone else isn't busy already. But yeah, there should definitely be some way to invite or join random customs.

Also I really wish 360 games would give you an option to view a player's country without diving into each individual profile. If I'm in a game with other NZers and even one person from US, UK, or even Aus (in some cases) joins, it immediately lags everyone else out. Not cool.

:/ That seriously sucks. Being able to setup a game the way you want is the most basic requirement for online games. I agree about a country filter too. There's only so many times I can be called a fag by an American kid before wanting to kill somone with a joypad smash to the face.

So far my multiplayer experience of Halo 3 has been absolutely amazing when 10 of my friends are online, but pretty shite when there's not enough for custom maps. Bungie need to sort it out!

Also, are they going to offer a fix for the split screen? playing in 4:3 is lame.

I'll be back on at 7-8, y'all. Maybe me, my friend and two of you can get together and try out legendary. E.V.A. helmet is teh pwn.

Ok I just beat it on normal and looked on youtube for the legendary ending...(starts at 2:33)

What in the hell happened there? Is
the ark/halo charging or something?
Geez they even make this Halo cliffhanger style.
Arbiter kills Master Chief in the end.

Actually I have no idea what happens, and I won't since it's not coming out for PC and it's not in development.
I wouldn't be surprised it is announced some months down the line at least, I mean I don't think they want to wait as long as with Halo 2; if they release it on Vista only though, it might actually encourage updating more (maybe not, but H3 is newer...). Either way, it'll come out eventually...I'm just happy I got to beat it now and figure out just about everything instead of from spoilers on the internet.

Woo, got all the skulls. Now I look like a ninja:

Uhm.. The Legendary ending was kind of stupid. You know what the biggest cliffhanger ending would be? After the Cheif goes into stasis, and it zooms out into space, you see a single flood spore floating through space...
D:

Hey, anyone want to play coop RIGHT NOW? Seriously. Right now. PM me on XBL, at my gamertag. which is also my screen name here. Get it?

The legendary ending has alot of rumors flying about, but most people are talking about these

The planet Onyx where all those other spartans were hiding, or something about Marathon

I played Marathon for 10 minutes on XBLA... It was fun for the time, but I got lost reaaaaaaallly quickly.
Well.. We'll never know... until bungie announces..
HALO 4
Hah! WE GOT YOU!

Coming whenever the hell we decide to make it.
