HBO gave ASoIaF pilot the greenlight

They're excellent books. I'm not sure whether to advise you to read them beforehand yet, I'd rather see how the pilot seems to be coming along more first.

Also, its a tv show not a movie.

Also, WHEN THE **** IS GRRM GOING TO FINISH DANCE WITH DRAGONS? JESUS ****!

Last I heard, he was on schedule to get it out by the end of the year (or early next year). As much as I hate waiting so long for it, I can appreciate Martin's attention to detail.

There's been a lot of news lately about casting. No more confirmed actors yet, but Tom Payne says he's auditioned for a role. He doesn't say which, but there were rumors that he was auditioning for Viserys before he actually said he'd auditioned for A Game of Thrones

They're casting in LA, NY, and London at the moment.

It also looks like Extras NI (an extra agency located in northern Ireland) might be getting ready for AGOT. They've told members not to cut their hair or shave until November, which is when AGOT starts filming.

If any of you happen to be from the UK, you can apply to be an extra here:

I think I speak for everyone who's read the series when I say "Holy living f#%*."

This is gonna be awesome.

The casting has gone perfectly so far. A handful of fairly big name actors, and a bunch of unknowns (which in HBO's case is always great). Heres where it stands at the moment.

Oh that's Harry Lloyd. He was excellent in the Family of Blood two-parter of Dr. Who, seems a pity he won't be in SoIaF for that long.

Mark Addy? Alright... except Robert is 6'5ish. Meh, maybe he'll work.

They'll probably just do some LOTR type shit to make him look the right size.

What Krynn said, and anyway, when we finally meet Robert, we're supposed to be a little disappointed, just like Ned is.

ETA: I did meet Elijah Wood once, though, and he seriously is a tiny dude. Like, 5'2". No kiddin'.

A few of these haven't been officially confirmed, but odds are pretty good that this is the cast.

Theres no way this pilot will fail. Most of those are indeed confirmed. They start filming in a week or so. Anyone know how long it usually takes for a pilot to go from filming to actually airing?

The only fear I have for this show is if people just download it rather than actually watching it on HBO and the ratings wont be high enough to continue the show. I'm actually going to sign up for HBO just for this.

Oh God, this is going to be epic! *wipes awesomeness-inspired tear from eye*

My own fear is that even though they will have the pilot filmed by Halloween, and the HBO execs will probably give the greenlight by Christmas, we still won't see jack shit until this time next year. It'll be agony, I tell ya! I hope HBO intentionally 'leaks' it, to build up buzz.

Since they're filming near Belfast I know a guy who'll prob be on the crew and another who's prob gonna be an extra. Will try to get info from 'em ;)

I'm guessing they'll film through most of November, finish post by the end of the year, and we'll have a full season order early next year (January or February), and we'll be watching season 1 of A Game of Thrones some time later next year.

Frustrating have to wait so long for it, but I suppose anyone who's been a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire for very long has gotten used to waiting.

I'd be amazed if they didn't pick up this series, especially with that cast.

Yes, he was the best member of the family. Judging by his performance in Doctor Who he'll do well in this part.

Yeah, GRRM is being a lazy dick. Robert Jordan's next book is gonna be released before Dance with Dragons and RJ is 6 feet under.

I'd say the quality of Martin's work is worth the wait.

I am looking forward to the next Wheel of Time book, though.

Wheel of Time is actually being finished? When's the dozenth book out?

A Memory of Light would have been about a bajillion pages long so the publishers decided that it's being split into 3 volumes, first part "The Gathering Storm" is out at the start of November, the 3rd or so. The last two pieces to follow in autumn 2010, 2011.

I read the prologue and I'm psyched.

I just wish GRRM would die too so someone efficient could finish the series :p

The Gathering Storm is set to release on October 27th. First 2 chapters have been posted somewhere as previews (1st chapter as text, and the 2nd chapter from the audio book I think).

I know, I read/listened to em all. Perfect release date for my birthday too :)

Anyone know if the aSoIF books are on audio book? I keep telling my friend to read them, but he keeps saying "only if they're on audio book" because hes silly like that.

Also, thats another thing im afraid of happening with this show. I'm afraid GRRM will croak and we wont get a real ending to the show. Or perhaps even a real beginning since they might be hesitant to fund a show that the creator wont finish.

They have been released as audio books. Narrated by Roy Dotrice, too, for the first 3 books.

Edit: A lot of people have that worry, considering his age and how slowly he tends to work. Especially after Robert Jordan's death. He seems to be in fairly good health though, no serious medical problems that he's mentioned, so I'm not worried. 2 more novels after A Dance with Dragons (unless the series ends up getting longer) which could take 4-10 years going by the release dates of the previous books.

Pretty huge bump, but with good reason. I'm about 300 pages into A Game of Thrones, and I'm really enjoying it. Looking around, I saw that they are screening the pilot episode in a week or so, with Spring being the estimated time for airing, can be seen here.

GAH I'm so psyched after this news. Its happening way quicker than I thought. And HBO's head of programming is a fan of the books, says that everything hes seen from the pilot is "fantastic" and that even he would be surprised if it wasn't greenlit.

Its like... god exists... and he loves me!

Goddamn is this exciting. The HBO execs sound really hyped for it. I'm almost certain they'll greenlight it and then... holy crap. Do you guys want to host like a live commentary on this thread, with us posting our thoughts minute by minute as we watch? That'd be hella fun. Naturally asoiaf.westeros.org is going to implode with all the fanboy squeeing.*

*The die-hard fan community is actually really looking forward to this. There is very little purist 'it's gonna suck' bitching online.

How could there be? HBO is renowned for making excellent series', GRRM is working closely with them to keep it as close to the original as possible, and practically every single casting call was the fan's number 1 pick for each role. Its a deal made in heaven. I'm going to be ordering HBO just for this show.

Ohgod thats so long from now. Are they going to bother showing the pilot beforehand?

I wonder how much of the more graphic (sex and violence) moments will make their way into the show. I could forgive HBO not wanting to show a pregnant fifteen year old being shagged by atila the hun.

Judging by the leaked pilot script, it's all still there. All the younger characters have been aged a few years, however. The most dramatic instance is that Daenerys, chronologically 13 at the start of the series, will be played by an actress ten years older, which in my opinion is for the better.

I see no reason why the violence will be touched; American audiences are much more accepting of graphic bloodshed than sex.

She still looks pretty young, despite being 22(3?). Doesn't look 13, but still young.

Even the sex scenes will still probably be pretty close to how they were. HBO doesn't skimp on either of those things.

Have you seen Rome?

Hmmm... it does have Sharpe in it, so as long as its like Rome, it should be alright.

Have you seen Rome?

Exactly. There was plenty of rough sex scenes and incest to satisfy dozens of shows in Rome. HBO doesn't shy away from anything.
