Eager to Tap Iraq's Oil, Industry Execs Suggested Military Intervention

Two years before the invasion of Iraq, oil executives and foreign policy advisers told the Bush administration that the United States would remain ?a prisoner of its energy dilemma? as long as Saddam Hussein was in power.

That April 2001 report, ?Strategic Policy Challenges for the 21st Century,? was prepared by the James A. Baker Institute for Public Policy and the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations at the request of Vice President Dick Cheney.

In retrospect, it appears that the report helped focus administration thinking on why it made geopolitical sense to oust Hussein, whose country sat on the world?s second largest oil reserves.

?Iraq remains a de-stabilizing influence to the flow of oil to international markets from the Middle East,? the report said.

this is some nice direct evidence, that almost puts to rest the 5 year old dilemma

scott mcclellan also confirmed this the other day:

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/07/08/mcclellan-cheney-oil/

MCCLELLAN: Certainly you can?t discount the large oil reserves inside Iraq and how much that plays into our national security interests and I don?t think you can discount how much that plays into the vice president?s thinking.

BROWN: Or his portfolio for that matter.

MCCLELLAN: Or his portfolio for that matter, absolutely with that being a former chief executive officer for Halliburton and that certainly played heavily into his thinking more so I think than the idea of transforming the Middle East into a beacon of democracy.

But anyone that suggested this was the reason for us going in to Iraq just a few years back was labelled as part of the looney left. This idea isn't that looney anymore, is it? You ask where these people tha called us this are now? They are all making a killing over at fox news.

No shit. The whole Iraq situation is such a great big cluster **** that no one in Washington really dares complain about it officially because the vast majority of democrats & republicans have been complicit in it, and if they do (Kucinich, Paul, Gravel) they generally get sided lined by both sides. It's a dismal state of affairs indeed.
