So I was looking at the random ads on a couple of the sites I visit and I noticed one particular site pop up pretty much everywhere I went, plentyoffish or something along those lines. They've obviously bought up some adspace on googleads recently or something, and it got me thinking. What are your thoughts on the legitimacy or the practical usage of internet dating sites? I generally dismiss them out of hand on the basis of 'it's the internet hurhurhur', but I'm wondering if that's an informed opinion or if I'm simply generalising based on the places where I hang out.

I'll say straight off the bat that I think the potential for deception is much higher on the internet than in real life.

Internet Dating is the easiest way to stalk thats for sure. you can be completely naked and the cops won't arrest you

My friend's mum uses them a lot.

She's still single.

That should be a good indicator.

Internet relationships can be fulfilling. Dating sites, though, don't seem any more useful or conducive than Facebook.

I have quite a few artists friends via dA, some of whom I've met at conventions or just when I was overseas and stuff, so that kind of stuff is fine enough. Internet Dating sites, that is to say sites specifically for internet dating, still seem a bit creepy to me.

A friend of mine met someone he knew on WoW.

He turned out to be a generous drug dealer that gave us this hectic home-brewed alcohol.

The next week was a prompt blur.

I personally think internet dating is cheap and a dead-end and a sign of failure on your part to make the effort to find someone without hiding behind an internet alias, a pleasant writing style and a touched up (or completely fictitious) photograph.

Still, there are true enough stories of people meeting and falling in love and marrying from an online relationship, but most of those aren't from dating websites.

I dunno, I guess I see dating sites like prostitution, its a quick fix but hardly ideal and tends to leave you still single and disappointed afterwards.

I'de rather just take the time to get to know a girl in RL and make a go of things from there.

This.

I used dating sites for a while. They're ideal for one night stands, but don't expect to score a relationship.

I highly advise against strict internet dating relationships. They only end in heartbreak!

I never used one, but I don't look down on any who do. I used facebook a cupple of times to meet up with girls I only met once or twice and didn't get a number from, you know.

Twice.

the statistics for the number of marriages as a direct result of internet dating are climbing every year...last number i heard it was somewhere around 35 percent or so. It gets a bad rep because any time the relationship goes sour it can always be blamed on the fact that it's "internet dating".

it's only going to become more popular and since everyone and their mother now has a computer there's no reason to suggest it's going to become any less so.

It might be great for people that live in very small towns or are isolated by being out of their normal environment.

I don't know anyone who uses internet dating sites, but my friend had been talking to this one kid since she was like 15 or 16 (She's 20 now) via AIM (forget where they met online, some forum), a year ago or so they decided to meet up, and then the second time they ended up dating and now they live together and have been in a relationship for over a year.

I used an internet dating site to meet my current internet girlfriend (who is in China), and she's the most amazing and perfect girl I've ever encountered (not that I've gotten to know a lot of girls as much as her). So, I guess I got really lucky. On the site I could view her profile and see her pics but I had to buy one month of membership (25 dollars) to be able to send her a message containing my email address. From there I was able to get her Skype and the rest is history.

We aren't sure of our future as far as how we'll be together on a permanent basis (we both want it very much, it isn't that kind of unsure, it's a "how are we going to do this" unsure), but I'm starting out by visiting her in about a year.

The luckiest part I think, is that I found a girl who was as interested as I was about having an internet relationship. She hasn't had a boyfriend in several years (rl or net), her last one being her first boyfriend (rl), who she left because he was cheating on her.

We realize it's going to be tough with all the waiting just to be with each other for a few weeks, and then back to more waiting. But, we can only hope it'll be all worth it in the end.

In the mean time I have zero confidence in meeting a girl in real life or even a girl close to me through a dating site (I tried several), and definitely won't find one as perfect as her, so it's not like I would ever feel locked down by her if I ever did get tired of her.

I don't get the entire concept of internet relationships. A relationship without physical contact doesn't make any sense.

I'm kinda glad I visited this thread before logging in; vegeta ..I dont know where to start  ...why do I see a chinese gulag in your future?

as more people start using these services they're becoming a legitimate source of finding a date/a relationship etc. call me old fashioned but I think I'd rather the face to face encounter. just because text and photos cant really give you a whole picture as to what the person may be like etc. Plus I wouldnt want to accidentily find out she has a very large ass or a peg leg

I should add that I never had a girlfriend before.

I suppose that not knowing what an RL relationship is like is what enables me to settle for an online one.

Though of course the desire to hug and kiss her is almost unbearable at times, I can still feel so close to her when we have intimate chats.

I should also add that we webcam frequently.

You unblocked Veggie then? :P

As for internet dating, I guess it could work, but it's probably even more of a needle-in-a-haystack situation than in 'real life'.

Also Stern I get enough shit from Raziaar, I don't have time for yours, so kindly **** off.

The biggest drawback I see to an internet dating site is that you have to pay for it.
Also I don't think I'd want someone in my family to stumble across "MEET MEN IN YOUR AREA FOR SEX NOW" and a picture of me to come up.

I had an internet relationship with a Danish girl for about seven months from the beginning of last year. It went from a message board to Facebook to MSN.

I became completely obssessed with her to the relative detriment of my social and academic life. I met her twice and both times were wonderful. But she didn't like me enough; it would've been obvious if I'd really sat and thought about it for a while. Evidently I wasn't worth the frustration of the distance etc. - and that really is the tormenting part of it - so it all fell apart. I had been willing to put up with it.

It never felt like an abnormal relationship, and it wasn't something I had set out looking for. We just met and got along well. It was fine while it lasted. But it was quite naive. Perhaps it having been so contingent made it easy to get excited and carried away. At any rate, there are some depressing artefacts from the relationship but none of them is overtly a consequence of it having been mostly conducted over the internet.

Next time I'd prefer a relationship with somebody living where meeting up won't pose any immeditate issue. Which come August will actually be Denmark. Seems I like teh Danes.

your family doesnt know you're gay? you should probably just come out to them, they'll be supportive. till then you miught want to stay away from gay dating sites

;)

Back in ye ole days of AOL, my ex found me by doing a search of online members located in her area code. So while not through a dating site, we did meet through an IM. Back then it was super easy to meet people in your area through AOL. However, it was also easy for gay old men to find you too :frown:

But lets say one of his family members found him on a gay dating site; who would actually want to admit it?

Seriously, I know some girls that look like garbage in person; but you would never know that from their close up my space pictures. It's almost a form of art the way they are able to transform themselves using the right camera angle.

To quote IMpossible by Figurine, for truth-

Instant Message conversations are filled with empty exclamations
Twelve point text cannot replace
Five minutes with you face to face
Geneva is such a cold cold font
I'm sorry if this comes out wrong
But I met someone new today
Long distance love is not my thing

oh that's where that went ...did you find my industrial sized jar of lube? I cant find it anywhere and well ...it's difficult to sit cuz of the chaffing

*rummages around*

k, beach ball, zucinni, ..day old bagel? how did that get in there? polish sausage, umbrella stand, empty jar of lube ....nope, not there

It's a relationship built around personal and emotional intimacy. In that way it can be just as strong as a relationship that allows for physical contact, since physical contact isn't there to become a crutch when no emotional intimacy can be had.

On the other hand, not getting blowjobs f*cking sucks.

[edit] Oh and Veggies, she might be fake, but highfive. I hope she's as good as you make her out to be :)
