I say develop simultaneously for whichever platforms suit the hardware, programming, and sales requirements of your game, and if necessary port to additional platforms at a later date.

Developers will probably make more money from Sony by staying with the PS3 exclusively.

Yeah, a nice exclusivity deal would be great for a developer: focus on one platform and get a huge chunk of money for it. The question for them is really can they make more from sales after spending whatever it takes while devloping for another system. Who knows what sort of deals go on behind closed doors? Just think about how many doors are closed right now in the whole world and then just imagine all of the incredible things that are happening behind them!!!

But can't they make more money by catering for more than one system? Especially not the one system that is last in sales.

I still see MGS4 coming to other platforms a year or two after its PS3 release. By then, no one will care. PS3 fans would be satisfied, and Konami-Sony would have made their sales numbers. I'm basing this on history: Half-Life 2, Gears of War, GTA, Tomb Raider, Halo, Knights of the Old Republic, etc. All "exclusives" that came out on other platforms much much later for people to ever care.

By being bestsellers?

No, by causing the developers to spread out their talent. A game could be so much better if they focused on one platform only. If developers start multi-platforming every game we would have a huge problem on our hands as well. For example: If every game was available for all platforms, there would more than likely be drastic decreases in sales of certain platforms. That would be most likely linked to the hardware performance.

They are only bestsellers because they have multiple target audiences in the way that they get to advertise and sell to 5 times the amount of people.
