Guys. I want you to describe the most complicated contraption you can think of that you want to make in hl2 and how it will work.

If someone mentions the honda commerical, or describes it, I'll castrate you via your phone/cable/t1/t3 line. :)

I dunno. Coming up with a good idea is going to be really hard. I dunno, maybe if someone did a version of the honda commercial. That would really cool and make good use of the engine.

actually I'd like to make a booby trap of some sort using the physics, I haven't exactly come up with anything yet but I will eventually :afro:

Seriously though, When I was little I had this set of blocks with holes in them and marbles. you would build up a tower with the blocks and then put the marble in the top and watch it fall down. I think that would be fun to watch for me cause it would be like reminising, but not that exstensive usage of the engine. Another cool idea might be like a circus. Think of all the physical crap that goes on. Trappeese ppl ballancing, jumping from rope swings, juggling. I think that would be cool.

i dont know about the most complicated, but how about this:

multiple gibshooters on a phys_pulleysystem shooting out ridiculous amounts of metal up into the air while moving, where they are intercepted by phys_magnets, when the magnets can't hold any more weight the head of the magnet crane falls off and hits a switch that activates physics for every single, wall, floor, ceiling, so basically the whole level falls under the laws of gravity and hits the bottom of the skybox killing all the players

or how about constructing a fan with a simple func_rotating, but putting phys_ballsockets on the end of each one with a ragdoll body connected to each fan blade. thatd be kinda neat to watch

Anyone remember the boardgame Mousetrap? That would be cool to duplicate, the setup not the entire premise of game.

I'd be satisfied with standing on one end of a teeter-totter and triggering a rock to fall on the other end of it.

Ah, Road Runner :cheese:

Well try making a simple mouse trap. Straching the model and calculating potentional energy and releasing it would be something to boggle the mind and the computer

YES!

Kenetic Engery Transfer! I'd like to see the G-man, sitting at a desk, with the novelty balls on strings tapping. Meanwhile he's delivering important dialogue.

Sorry, I don't remember the name of that item. I know one thing! It utilizes - Kenetic Energy Transfer - Oh YEAH!

-Ghost.

How about a fully working automobile, complete with differential suspension and a piston driven engine?

that would be neat. of course itd be coolest if it was a stripped down car so you could see all the parts moving.

wait could you have a piston driven engine like that?

Are you serious? so your telling me, you could model an engine how it is in real life. and just set 2 different gases or a force trigger in teh engine.. to make the pistons move, and it would wokr how they do in real life?

no way. i don't believe it. If that was the case couldn't they virtually test all new cars in every single way with hl2?

not accurate enough to actually test new engines, but I was gonna say the same thing, maybe a tiny bit would need faking (or would it, didn't someone say explosions could be more powerful in a smaller volume.. eg pistons firing could work) , but a working engine would be possible I think. Deffinately a machine of some kind. Maybe a Steam Engine?

Personally I think a huge recking ball with crane and a building made out of metal would be fun...

Or demonstrating the orbits of planets and their moons on each other, see how good it really is.

Or how about the inards of a VCR or DVD player, moving mechanical parts in that, setup a large set of buttons to control it (quite complex when you consider how it behaves when taking the tape from the cassette to play/ff/rw/rec eject.. Maybe use one of those cable shader things but flat as the tape itself

How about a ships engine, with controls

How about an actual firing weapon, large scale so it can be seen in detail. Maybe a giant shotgun and some poor bastard ragdoll in its sights to test it.. use the manipulator to load the shells then pull the trigger

You'd probably have to fake the engine for the car idea as I doubt Havok is advanced enough to simulate combustion.

Another idea, get a hold of some Rube Goldberg cartoons and try recreating some of those devices.

Link for those of you unfamiliar with Rube Goldberg.

what about a generator.. use the power of water.. though the flow of water itself would need to be faked with strong wind effects (if those are possible? I imagine so, wind was in HL1) but the rest of it, turbines and so on could work, there must be some kind of attractor/deflector thing to use like magnets possible in the engine

Or how about a walking robot. Think large Mech. Sit in the cockpit, have control over its movements aswell as walking which is also effected by gravity so it could fall over. Design two working ones and you've got a HL2 mechwarror game heh

A Car Wash?

working Hot Air Balloon (if there's gravity and things can go down, they should also be able to go up too)

Lava Lamp (no seriously)

ooh, put on a puppet show! But you can only use ragdolls with wires attached to hold them up and control them :)

Ok how about this... a fully working factory floor building a car.. all the many robot arms, conveyor belts. everything moving in unison and the end result, using all the bits of a car (major parts, would get silly if it was down to individual nuts and bolts.. hmm or would it?;)) there's a finished car that Barney gets in and pulls out of the factory only to have the thing fall apart as he goes over the first speed bump.

Or what about put together the center of London, including shoppers, cars, black cabs, everything going about with a purpose and behaving properly. See if its possible to solve the constant gridlock in piccadilly, now thats complex! ;)

Pinball table (probably been suggested months ago I bet :( )

Space Invaders Game

A Spectrum Emulator ;) well if it can be done in Java script why not. Play it on a huge monitor in the ruins of Black Mesa. Fix it so things referenced in the original code is handled differently within the source engine, turning old 2D few color games into actual objects in 3D. Could even be a way to establish which pixels in the original is where, getting some sort of 3D form to it. Have a way to load in any spectrum game to play in the source engine.. Hey it would be a challenge for a coder wouldn't it :)

hey yatta, you should see the pinball mode in carmageddon.
and i like the car factory idea by fenric. btw, what honda commercial?

I doubt the gravity works on point to point attraction (center of gravity to center of gravity) but instead exerts force on an axis. Or maybe they do have such a system implemented; it would also be useful for magnetic attraction.

A briefly shown commercial in which car parts are lined up like dominos and set each other in motion (but not all by falling on each other: some spin, etc.).

hey lets do that one *hides from sidewinder* ;)

*Gasp*

Don't do it, Sidewinder! It's not worth it! :E

I'd like to make a fully-simulated rope bridge, so it would bend and sway as you walk across it.

And I like the car factory idea. The hardest part would be finding someone crazy enough to map it!

howabout, a weapon, based on the rocket launcher, but instead of rockets it shoots dead ragdoll combine soldiers. like you could set it for rapid fire and shower them over a strider, and watch it's legs weaken as it eventually topples amid 45 dead bodies

Haha, that would be awesome LittleB. Better yet, launch YOURSELF. Remember the Kidapult from Richie Rich? :E

oh dude an assemply building a car WOULD BE SWEET

and totally possible becuase of that welding/glue stuff!
