Most complicated use of Havok 2

how about a windtunnel where the dry ice is blown from a fan and then streamlines whatever is in the tunnel

or waves, would be good to have proper rip currents and waves / undertow working. This could be adapted to make wind, realistic wind that carries objects, blows projectiles off course etc

a catapult, distance things go is determined by how far back the catapult is held before releae, the weight of the object (which would also slow down the catapult arm slightly) and how much it is streamlined

table football :)

jelly

a pressure hose, water breaks on things and peels off things like paint and dirt whilst knocking over light things

There's no fluid dynamics simulation in the Havok engine. Things like wind tunnels, waves/undertoes, table football, and pressure hoses couldn't be simulated in it just yet. Hopefully that's the next step.

Anybody mentioned bowling alley yet? It's always been the typical first thing you do with dynamics in 3D apps, rolling a bowling ball toward some pins just to say you've done it.. a proper game would be kinda neat?

Why can't you simulate a wind-tunnel? One of the valve developers created a tornado using Source, and they have always said there are limitless possibilities with their new engine. I hope they are right :)

the honda ad that everyone refers to was actually based on a german art piece from the early 80s.

Pretty much a german art group went and set up about 1 entire hour of actions and reactions and put it to video. Orginally the art piece took even longer because there were parts of the video that were edited out due to boringness.

Parts of the art piece included having chemical reactions slowly make foam until the foam pushed something this happens at least 12 times in that hour in different ways.

it took many tries before it worked, is completely real, and was done inside a massive wearhouse.

It puts the honda ad to shame.

There IS a newton's cradle, jonbob, its somewhere under http://oldsite.havok.com/xtra/. Look to the left, and click on User created files or whatever. Very cool, as you can edit how many balls there are; from one to more than what your processor can handle. :dork:

Seriously though, When I was little I had this set of blocks with holes in them and marbles. you would build up a tower with the blocks and then put the marble in the top and watch it fall down. I think that would be fun to watch for me cause it would be like reminising, but not that exstensive usage of the engine. Another cool idea might be like a circus. Think of all the physical crap that goes on. Trappeese ppl ballancing, jumping from rope swings, juggling. I think that would be cool.

oh god, i know what you're talking about, i dont remember the name, but some of the pieces had funnels in it, or like a wheel.

it would be interesting to mod out some mechs kinda like the ones in armord core. be kinda neat to play a mech sim on the havok engine.

Your the first person outside the fan sites of it that I've seen who even knows it (or admits to knowing it) :)

I've still got it knocking about somewhere, one of these days I'll see if I can get it to run on win2k, be interesting to see it again

Ever play the game "Mouse Trap" where you pregress throught the level while building a contraption that casue a whole bunch of chain reactions that eventually sends a net flyin down onto the unfortunate mouse? DO THAT! That would be a pretty kewl/lame mod that I'd play/for ten minutes.

I think the car idea is awsome. Id love to see that , and then get a model of my own car for it ..

I think I'd like to build a Level based on the '13th ghosts' movie. The house was amazing and ever changing. Imagine a level where it would change behind you as you moved foreward (ok maybe not to the level that would drive you crazy) but still an ever changing level with cog's, glass with latin written upon it and neon lights would be amazing.

i think fluid dynamics would be possible with a rigid body physics system. every water molecule would be a spherical shape with a certain bounce and friction amount, also weight etc.etc. ofcourse on current computers i guess we could only have 20 water molecules ineracting at one time or so..

cluster super computer anyone?

Hmm I have *always* been a fan of the completely destructive map. Anyways if u make a big motor or something make sure its interactive otherwise its not alot of fun :)

I know this is not entirely in the spirit of the thread but how about a MMPFPS massive multiplayer First person shooter? Where instead of doing boring I-get-to-be-a-black-smith type jobs u need to kill etc. that would be interesting but with todays tech theres prolly still a few big bottlenecks for that to be a possibility.

selas explain more please............

try playing planetside, its an mmofps. i pld for about 3 months, cant afford to renew my subscription tho ;(

I would like to see someone try to do something like the geo-mod in red faction promised to do. like shooting a hole in a pipe and having water flood the room...ect

how about a mod based on the film the Cube? Certain cubes have traps some don't and its a case of getting out.. Multiplayer would be fun on it, have people spawn in completely random cubes (only if its currently empty) and people can either go it alone or team up to escape the cube. Also its forever changing so going one route each time wouldn't always mean it would lead directly to the exit.. HL showed you could have things triggered by sound, have all kinds of fun traps, some from the films the rest made up. Though change it slightly so people don't stay in the same cube realising it eventually takes them to the exit.. Got the idea to do the Cube from ADV's suggestion of an ever changing map. The Cube would be perfect for that just like 13 ghosts

Any takers? :)

Play Max Payne 2 - there is a "funhouse" filled with Havok2 Engine "games". Traps, flipping and moving mechanisms and there is a pool billard table, too.

About using the Source engine to simulate an internal combustion engine:

Waste of resources. The same effect can be produced in a much more efficent manner. The only difference that you would get in game would be a fraction of your original frame rate.

About the factory line vehicle manufacturing:

It would look impressive, but it would be only eye candy ultimately.

I think that running on top of a boulder would be a good use for the engine. Once you got it rolling, you'd have to keep running to avoid getting crushed under it, or jump off.

Or how about midair dog fights between air ships. Sounds fun to me.... maybe that Stargate mod someone suggested up higher could work. hmmm....

I think you could do that with metaballs, if you're familiar with the term. Basically, a metaball is a sphere that attracts (or repels) another one when placed close together, so they join together (or the opposite). If you had a load of falling metalballs that attracted each other it'd be like a liquid, but not so accurate.

well the factory line and combustion engine would be just to see if it can be done, wouldn't be part of a game and framerate wouldn't be a major issue really.

I like the rock idea though.. the air ship dog fight thing I believe thats in a small european game already. Saying that, I'm a huge fan of airships and that kind of technology and the thought of a culture that hasn't reached jets and airplanes yet. Sort of a mix between victorian style, like the old classic films, two thousand leagues, and journey to the center of the earth and a lot like the Master of the World film with Vincent Price http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055152/ and some more futuristic technology, like that style and with holograms and fun things like that, that whole style fascinates me and I wouldn't need to be asked twice to work on a mod like that! *hint hint* :D heh

Funny you should mention Stargate, I just had yet another person beg me for my Stargate model for a mod.. They didn't say what it was for, HL, Unreal etc. Didn't even say thanks for crying out loud! lol. Didn't get it though lol

'bout the honda commercial... everything is real, they only needed CG to make the exaust roll ;) just my 2 cents

Guys just remember this is a computer game engine, not a 600 million dollar nasa physics reaction simulator that the french were using to gather data on nuclear explosions.

Its good to add a bit too game play but its not THAT good.

which suggestions are you speaking of?

We're coming up with possible idea's on what could be done with it within the limits of the source engine. If you mean the suggestions of things at an atomic level I'm pretty sure those people were joking :) The others though would be mostly possible

Nothing in particular I'm just saying a fair few of the suggestions are a bit out there. Don't expect TOO much from the engine thats all. I get the feeling a lot of people are going to be disappointed thinking it can do and simulate everything in the universe.

P.s. UNDER A KILLING MOON ROCKED!!!! I played it ages ago, 4 or 5 CDi's I think it was. I got up to a place where I used the dart gun to shoot the button through a laser net in some house before getting suck.

Either way I don't have the game any more but I would LOVE to have it. I still think about it sometimes, no idea like I said where to get it from now though.

There are some silly idea's but I do then most could be done, maybe not in actual games (the engine for example) as it would be too taxing on its own. But as a challenge, something to see how far the engine could be pushed it would be great, and useful too for anyone later trying to do things with it. I wonder if anyone has suggested a breakout/Arkanoid style game? :)

lol that sounds familiar... i think i ended up stuck aruond that part too :D though it rings a bell that I got to the moon or something at some point. Or was that the sequel

I don't remember exactly how many CD's it was now.. I remember it was a lot yeah, especially for back then. I remember it didn't seem to be slow either, and I think this was like with 486's and stuff too heh

I know I've got it somewhere, haven't found it yet, legit version just not got a box for it (got it years back with a few others from some carboot sale) Heaven knows where I put it. I suppose carboots or markets, maybe ebay? might be there. Maybe its freeware now, being so old?

If any of the fans of the game fancy trying an updated mod for HL2 of it.. I'd be interested :D

Didn't that Ed O'Neil play the part of Tex Murphy in it? lol, he probably didn't but the character just reminds me of that guy, someone brought it all back when they suggested him for one of the parts in a theoretical HL movie

Edit: http://www.unofficialtexmurphy.com just saw this site.. I didn't even realise that old Amiga game Mean Streets was actually the first game in the series lol.. oh and he does look a bit like Ed O'Neil! :)

hehehe, Fenric is a Jules Verne fan....well, at least the movie adaptions.

"20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" is still one of the greatest novels I have ever read.

:D

I've never really thought about it before but you could be right. heh I sometimes wondered though why I was so fascinated by that kind of style, just never put two and two together. Weird heh. I dunno about the books, if I ever read them it must have been when I was really young, but then I've read a few books I don't remember anymore (terrible selective memory sometimes :D)

I'd jump at the chance to do a mod in that style though, designing and building those kinds of vehicles, but adding a futuristic twist to them, but no big fancy powerful weapons, I've always prefered the way battles and things used to be fought, swords and cannons, crossbows and stuff like that. Nuke's and shields and lasers are kinda boring sometimes :)

Another author I recommend for you in these styling is H.G. Wells. An amazing author... in fact, now that I think about it....

THOSE STRIDERS ARE STRAIGHT OUT OF "WAR OF THE WORLDS" BY H.G. WELLS!!!! Good grief, they match the description precisely, right down to having 3 legs and patrolling through cities.

i dont know about the most complicated, but how about this:

multiple gibshooters on a phys_pulleysystem shooting out ridiculous amounts of metal up into the air while moving, where they are intercepted by phys_magnets, when the magnets can't hold any more weight the head of the magnet crane falls off and hits a switch that activates physics for every single, wall, floor, ceiling, so basically the whole level falls under the laws of gravity and hits the bottom of the skybox killing all the players

cool

heh oh im well versed in WOTW ;) great story

ideas come to mind of a "War Of The Worlds" mod. The "heat gun" is already mounted on the striders. Hmmm, something like having to cross a city with around 20 striders hunting you down. Fun.

actually i kind of want to recreate my first car accident and see if that'll work... somehow i doubt it but you never know.
