New Hi Res pics of HL2

Wow. Those shots are pretty ucking fugly, if I may point out the obvious.

I know this will upset alot of you, but you need to wake up and realize the obvious.

I agree... I feel kinda dissapointed now... those screens are so damn ugly...

The character's shadows don't line up with the light sources either...

???

They don't cause hl2 doesn't have full dynamic lighting. If you look at earlier screenshots you can see the shadow inconsistencies as well.

As for the screeshots in general, I agree, I am less than impressed that these are supposedly 7 months more developed than the last ones.

One thought I had, though, was what if these aren't the final compiles of the maps? You know how in HL1 you can choose to do fast rad, normal rad, or extra rad? Also you can use commands like "bouce 3" to get better shadowing. Well what if Valve is still in testing stages to make sure there are no bugs? Would it really make sense for them to do a full, final compile on everything when it would probably take 4 times as long and then just end up having to do it again when they find a bug?

Just a thought and could very well be wrong, but it might explain somethings if these are using the equivalent of fast vis and the like.

What do you guys think?

What do u expect from 5 years of development, i bet they have u huge cache of old screenshots from over the years to throw at the wild dogs while there trying to sort out the important stuff, the whole point of E3 is to hype stuff up, why do that if u just gave everything away in a magazine a week before.

how long do you think this thread will go till valve answers the call?

Brass, thanks for being captain obvious :) lol

Anyhow, I say we wait for E3, if the game still looks like crap as seen in these shots.. well.. then that's a sad day for gaming history.

What? And be logical? Never. :sniper:

No Soup for You!!!

I just looked at those screens again....they are friggin horrible...they look like something from GoldenEye...

I bet Valve won't say anything until E3, and then we'll have different questions and uncertanties...over and over until the game is released. But who knows if it'll be good.

I think it would have been better if they wouldn't release the screenies and we would speculate ;)

All I have to say about all this is that I'm scared, and I had a hard time reading through all the posts. I started on page 1 out of 7 then it was 5 out of 8 and finally I made it to page 9 out of 9. You guys are posting too fast.

I dunno but if you want this thread to stay open, don't anyone get into some flame war or spamfest. Remember, Munro didn't agree to this and I'm probably screwed for even allowing it. So try keep it as nice as possible, please? :D

Hey who knows, keep it clean and maybe a Valve employee will actually bother this time to reply and atleast stop people worrying. From a PR point of view that would be one of the better things they could do right now, that and quickly show us something amazing would be nice.

wouldnt that suck? the most anticipated game of all time, turns out like Deus Ex2?

maybe they released those screens on purpose, so they can blow the shit outta us at E3..

Seriously doubt it, but if that is their plan it's even more pathetic. Intentionally releasing shitty screens in an attempt to make other content look good doesn't go a long way in giving me hope for hl2.

So what do you guys think about my idea above? Sorry to repost, but it got a bit lost in the flood.

Seemed about the only explanation that I could come up with. Though it still wouldn't really make sense why Valve would show screens of it.

ouch! thats cold
didnt mean it to be, in fact Im hoping for the contrary.
at this point I think we all just want the damn game, good, bad or even ugly.

then gabe is like "muhahahaha i am t3h l337 h4x0r, I caught u off guard, LOL!!11!1!1111111111one11111!!!" ;)

maybe this whole leaked build was intentional, so now anything that the public doesnt like they can blame the hackorz. not likly but a thought

I'm guessing the real ugly ones are just beta images with effects turned down.

I don't see how source/hl2 could regress so much in a year, especially with the newest source bink(when was that, september?) with the new light system in the house and whatnot.
So I think you guys are just over reacting, especially the doom guy.

edit: and if they aren't from the beta, then they are probably just shots with the graphics tuned down. Unless valve really mucked up and pulled a DX2, but I think we all know that's not likely.

I dont understand whats yalls problem with the screen shots. they look fine to me. damn perfectionists :)

Yah that Doom guy. Prepare yourself mates and yanks. These screens will be given the opposing fanboys of Doom III, Halo 2, and Farcry some fine ammunition to launch at our beloved franchise's honor.

sorry to hijack, but can anyone explain my sig?

Take it up with a moderator via PM, me thinks.. prolly not a good idea to be brash about it in "public"

Take it up with an Admin, site blocking is their department, not super moderators or moderators or news writers or irc channel peons;)

Anyways, back on topic :D

Assuming that these are old shots with settings turned way down is just a feeble attempt to comfort yourselves. There is absolutely no logical reason to release a series of intentionally shitty screens to a mag for print. The whole point of giving mags content is to intice the public, and you don't intice them by intentionally making the game look bad.

It's obvious that hl2 has suffered a great deal since the delay.

So you guys think that half life 2 is going for that more dark tone?

yeah, apologies... it got away from me there for a second :(

Damn you lot are so shallow... basing your opinion on how a game on how it looks isn't something i would recommend you do. When the first screenshots of unreal 2 were released i thought they looked stunning at the time and that the game would be brilliant. We all know how that game turned out.... :|

Please reserve your judgement until you get your pwns on the game a few months down the line.

Too many of you guys are living in denial! :D

That is what the game looks like. We were impressed with it last year because it was our first glimpse. Now we've adapted and it doesn't look so good. In fact it looks like crap!

At least it has physics...

but, if you were to have a hungry dog, wanting some meat, and you give a dog meat would he judge the quality?

doesn't explain where all the other stuff Valve claimed it had has gone though

normals
HDR
specular
reflection
refraction
custom shaders

etc. and so on

I have noticed that more and more with these modern games. Older games were not graphically capable (shadows and lighting wise) of having a dark forboding environments. Now we have computers that can have these pretty graphics and some of these games are going for very dark tones.

The original Half-Life did a pretty good job of keeping me in suspense, it looks like HL2 has the chance to scare the crap out of me.

[Edit]: Not worth making another post, but, compare the "new" screenshot to the old ones. The old ones look far better.
