I call BS. Abandoning the GameBoy, even if it's only the name, would be immensely foolish. You don't just walk away from nearly 20 years of incredible brand equity. We may not see one for a while as the DS runs its lifecycle, but I believe another GameBoy will come about eventually after the Advance.

Interesting.

Gameboy is a pretty corny name if you ask me. People didn't care though, because there was no good competition for it, and it was a great portable.

I mean, they have so many females and adults that like portables that it actually didn't really make sense as a name for their portables anyway.

However, if they create another hand-held with one screen, what will they call it?

Nintendo S?
Nintendo SS (Single Screen)?
Gamepeople?
Gamegirl?
Gamehuman?
Gamehomosapien?

Awesome? No.

How about...

Nintendo Portable. Just steal Sony's name. Sony wouldn't hesitate.

I don't know. I like Nintendo SS.

Continuing the Gameboy brand would seem like a step-backwards imo.

Why exactly? What bearing does the name have on Nintendo continuing down its current track of innovating in the industry. None, IMO. But not one console manufacturer, with the exception of Sony, can lay claim to the type of brand equity the name GameBoy holds. From a business perspective, I think Nintendo knows better...anything with the word Gameboy on it is guaranteed to sell and sell well. The DS was a risk that ended up working out beautifully. Continue your trends of innovation WITH the gameBoy name...that's a gold mine, IMO. I still believe that the next Nintendo portable will carry the GameBoy name.

The time of the GameBoy is over. There will be no more. The NDS is here to stay. If you don't believe me, just look at the numbers.

The DS is having amazing sales. It's still selling out week by week at every electronics store I go to - Best Buy, Futureshop, EB Games - and it's been out for two years. The Gameboy is old hat by now, very few people want it and there's no point producing them for a 0.001% market share.

Uhhh... Who cares? NDS is essentially the next gameboy as far as I'm concerned. What does it matter what it's called?

Why would you want a new gameboy when you could get a DS Advance? NOW WITH RETNAL SCANNER!

or wait 2 months for the DS Advance XLR. Comes in 3 new flavours!

Doesn't matter to me...

Plus, it's good they have a new name, or rather have taken a departure from the Gameboy... Seems just so old now, especially since the name is almost as old as me.

The end of the Gameboy brings a virtual, pixelated tear to my eye, but it must be done. The word no longer carries much meaning and it can alienate older portable owners.
The DS caters more to a Gameperson.
