I don't think you need video cards as powerfull as the x800 for any game right now. half life 2 will run good on the 9600 pro and xt. So why spend a fortune on somethign you dont need right now. maybe wait till some games come out for the unreal 2 engine in 2008 lol

lol, must say bolleh thats a bloody nice upgrade. i just upgraded from a XP1400+, 215mb DDR and a MX440 (stop laughing at the back). im now on a lovely beast of XP2600+ (OC to 3200+ 
), 512mb DDR and a FX5600...the card is kinda crap but still runs farcry, thief 3 etc pretty well. bring on my 9800 pro in a week hehehehehehehe. bring on HL2 for that matter aswell...time to play it the way the developers made it to be...

The cpu specs are damn confusing, mostly because mhz is far from the only measure of cpu speed.. for example, my duron 1300 would struggle, but an Athlon XP of the same mhz would fare much better. I've been doing a staggered upgrade over the last 6 months, and only the cpu is left now. I can say that a 9600xt graphics card rocks some serious ass, I can play farcry and ut2004 on very respectable settings.
ATi vs nvidia, I think the 6800 and x800 are almost a dead heat on power, but the x800 has 3dc, so will probably win on features, nothing uses ps3. Bear in mind that the x800 is about 100 quid cheaper. Apparently HL2 runs at 60fps on full settings with a 9800 pro 256mb.
Someone mentioned the min specs for the unreal engine being high - yes, it ran at 16fps on a 6800 ultra. Ouch. But by the time it's out we'll all be using true PCI-x graphics cards (nvidia, note that "true", and until then get out of my pc).
I reckon I could build an HL2 worthy pc for 200 quid. Maybe 300, with peripherals.

tbh, my 5600 is lagging behind on the performance front (biiiiiiig time). you can get a 9600xt for 98 quid from komplett.co.uk. im getting a 9800pro from komplett for 141 quid. y not just dish out that 45 quid or whatever and get a card that will last you for 4-5 years from now. the 9600xt does rock any game, but why not make a decent future investment...like me

I would consider that a future investment considered there is a graphics card out 3 times better.

I'm running a 733 @ 785MHz (yeah I know, that was a huge OC blah blah blah), but some of you people would be surprised at what it, 512MB SDRAM and a 9200SE 128MB video card would run. I've successfully played all the games that you have on my four-year old piece of poo that apparently can't run faster than a grandma on a gopher. I'm upgrading soonish yes, but that's not the point. Get off your soapbox telling people who have older systems that there's no excuse for having this, and that real gamers don't have PoS systems, but rather, go and get some perspective.

I'm also starting to reach the point where upgrading your PC for hundreds of dollars is starting to not make economic sence anymore. (rent , insurance,car, g/f,bills,food)
Sure HL2 is a great game and i would love to play it, but spending 5-7 hundred dollars every year/two years for a hobby is starting to become a very bad way to spend money.
(ps. yes im buying a 3,2ghz P4, 2048 mb ram, X800 pro, 20" FP monitor, beast for around €3000 in September the flesh is weak )
Owned my current machine for three years without upgrades,can't play most modern games that come out now 1.7 P4, 256 RAM, Geforce 3.
