Don't mean to rub it in, but DAMN this game is actually really good. I may have to subscribe. Forgoten all the names of the planets and bases but playing as NC we just kicked the TC's arse! Took over about 3 towers and 3 bases moving from each one with a fleet of Galaxy drop ships, about 6 Vanguard Tanks, loads of those Mech things, just a whole army swarmed all their bases :D Playing as a sniper (only way I can get kills) I formed a kinda sniper squad with another two snipers, and we just stayed back and let her rip while the rest of us just rushed in. I think I got 8 or so kills in 8 shots on one base :p Great game!

Anywho, I have to actually subscribe now. My trial ran out. I might not though until after I get my midterm schedule so I can see if it's worth it to pay $13.00 to play for the time I'll get this this month.

Wow, Jimmeh, you caught on fast. Also, it's not often you see Galaxys being used anymore. You must have been attacking with a large outfit of some sort, because most people use personal transport nowadays.

Sniping in PlanetSide is one of the most skillfull ways to get kill possible. It becomes easier later once you can afford Rexo, Engineering, and Medical, so you don't have to carry around medkits or keep going back to that AMS or local equipment terminal. Not trying to brag, but I'm a very good sniper. It takes practice, but the most satisfying feeling in this game is sitting atop a tree on one of the more open continents and sniping during a big zerg, prefferably on the defense. I remember last time I was subscribed I got so many BEPs by just sitting in a tree with my rifle and scouting for any enemy AMSs. I moved around if I couldn't find any, but once I did, all I did was wait for them to appear from inside the cloaking bubble and I'd have so many targets.

Sniping is a great way to keep the enemy at bay, and will come in more use then you expect.

I'm glad you're considering subscribing Jimmeh, and I hope you do.

no, they release a trial when the game is old, like planetside and SWG.

If you prefer FPS to RPGs you will like WOW 10 times more than planetside.

If you prefer RPGs to FPS you will like WOW 1,000 times more.

that pretty much sums it up- WOW is just so fun to play- the enviroments are lush and varied, the characters diverse in options and there are over 1,000 quests. You gotta love WOW.

I'm not trying to defend PS against WoW, but from things I've read and seen, WoW looks just like any other MMORPG, yet the game has receives so much praise. What is so amazing?

Wow, well, a lot. I'll give some idea, but I can't list all of the changes.

Liberator (bomber)
SkyGuard (AA vehicle)
BFRs (big, shielded mechs)
Lots of balance changes, general latency issues fixed
Core Combat (expansion pack which opens up new technology and locations)

I noticed that. I remember, when I played my other trial (way back in 2003) there were loads of Galaxies flying about. Now they are really rare and I'm always surprised to see one.

Has the way you drive vehicles changed? I seem to remember them being first person but now it defaults to third person. I also remember the ANT having a cockpit and you could see your hands on the steering wheel.

I'm rubbish at this. I seem to have lots of problems making a kill. No matter what I'm driving or flying I always die as soon as someone sees me. It seems that even if I was in a tank and came across one infantry guy running around he'd manage to kill me. Since I took a left out of Jimmeh's book and became a sniper I've had a few more kills though.
 
You can switch between first and third person views. Check your keymapping. Very handy.

Yeah, but I meant that it defaults to third person. I remember it being first person most of the time and vehicles (Particulary the ANT) having a cockpit.

basically, it combines all the BEST ideas from other MMOs into one game, and polishes it so much, and makes it fun. There's nothing incredibly new in WOW, except for the fact that it's the very first MMO game that feels like a singleplayer game- the quests are interesting, the enviroments are varied, the cities are huge, the wildlife is lush- everything about it feels like it's been hand crafted. SWG just has bare landscapes with a few pre- made houses... PS has large continents with nothing but identical facilities and TREES galore... But WOW has barren feilds; it has dark forests; it has huge citadels; it has bustling trade districts; it has dragon's lairs! when the sun sets over a magical lake, fading behind the mountains, spreading a bautiful red light over the darkening scenery, you can vaguely see in the distance a group of warriors battling a troll. If you look to the forest you can see some strange little houses hidden from view. If you look into the sky you can see legandary heroes riding on griffeons, flying to ironforge to sell their goods at an auction. WOW is the best MMO game ever, par none.

If you give WOW "a go", i can garantee you will be completely and utterly hooked and will (probally) never see the light of day again. That's what happened to me in the beta, and that's whats happened to many people here... look at letters- he bought the game 13 days ago and he's almost played it for 100 hours. That's 7 hours a day... which could be from 3 in the afternoon 'till 10 at night EVERY DAY. I mean sheesh, this game is addictive.

you don't need to do your exams. the only qualifications you need are in the proffesion of your choice... i'm going to be a leatherworker / enchanter :) before i was a miner / engineer and made bundles of gold selling my recouces at the auction :p

lol, For one moment I thought you were going to go on about only needing to do qualifications for the job I want to do in real life.... I shoulda known better ;)
 
What's the combat like in WoW? One of the things that was so piss poor in that Anarchy Online was the combat, oh dear it was laughable really, but so poor I felt more like crying I just wasted 4 hours downloading that crock of shite.

But for Planetside, I think I need to get up another rank (I think to BR 6/7) so I can get my hands on a MAX Suit or one of those BFR's. :D
 
it'd be wise to invest in the Uni Max cert early on. you can get 5/6 points from just going through training, so you should have enough to get it. i initially got the Air Support cert (gal/liberator/lodestar) but realised there wasn't any demand for my skills, so i quickly switched and it's looking to be a good one. being in a max is both a blessing and a curse. you get loads of kills, but you become a bullet/rocket magnet, so make friends with an engineer!

also a note about some of those upgrades in Planetside...you need the Core Combat expansion to be able to use most of those. eg. the BFR...none of us can use it since we don't have Core Combat.

Yeh I've gone up another rank after a spanking game, so I'll get the MAX anti-infantry one. I figured you'd be able to get the BFR as you can use 'em in VR Training but dammit :(
 
well after a full day of installing and patching, reinstalling, trying to launch the game i finnaly started. it all has great potential to be a good game and everything but it appeared that nobody else was around. i saw a population meter that said 50% there and 50% where i was and when i moved location the 50% followed me.

Well, you should use your map. It easily lets you know where the biggest battles are raging. And it doesn't matter what time it is, because the other night I played from 12:00 - 5:00AM EST and I was fighting in a mildly large battle the whole time. :p

Oh, and the percentages are just the percent of the total population on a continent per empire. So say you're on a continent, and you see it says the NC has 56%, VS has 32%, and TR only has 12%, that means, of course, that 56% of that continent's population belongs to the NC, not 56% of the NC is on that continent.

So even if your empire had 76% of the population somewhere, you could only have 5 guys there, with only one or two other guys.
 
Yeah I had the same trouble at first, but once you find a decent squad you'll be fine - the first decent squad I was in was a full 10 man squad with a galaxy, we got tonnes of kills and experience from it, and squads are always heading off to the hotspots.

And Malfunction, are Outfits the Planetside equivalent of clans? I was asked to join a few but declined as I thought there was no point if I've got like 5 days left on my trial. I'll probably subscribe but I'll decide when me trial runs out.

Well, they can be gigantic. There is one outfit that has over 700 members.

Oh, I just found out that in order to subscribe you need to actually purchase the game. It's only $9.99 though, but it'd be cool if we could just use that trial cd-key and subcribe to it through that.
 
anyone else having trouble getting into the game? whenever i try getting in it spits me out to the character screen and displays a a timer (set to 10 hours!) and something next to it saying 'Empire Characters Disabled'. anyone know what's going on? is this a regular thing? if it helps, i created a TR char just before trying to log onto my NC char. :|

 
...I try to to get through the launchpad thing, and when I hit "Sign In"
Then "Subscribe"...It tells me my trial subscription expired?!
What the hell?!
 
I got this weird thing going on with the game.

Once I have played for like 1 hour and 29 minutes, the game ALWAYS freezes. Not the whole computer, but just the game. And when I try to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and "terminate" the game, the computer just loads and loads but nothing happens.
This has happened two times now, and it's getting extremely frustrating. Anyone having any idea what the hell is going on?

Dedalus, you answered your problem. If you create a character of a different empire on the same server, your other characters of any other empire on that server are disabled to prevent people from hopping from empire to empire in order to be on the side with the biggest advantage.

That may sound stupid, but it was a big problem a while ago. Empires would become so overpopulated that the other two empires would be obliterated very easily.

I have no idea about your other problems guys. The only advice I can give you is disabled all anti-virus and firewalls before playing. AV programs have a knack for interfering with PlanetSide sometimes.

Oh, and little headsup to anyone considering subscribing after their trial ends. I recently found out that you must purchase a retail copy either from SOE or any other retailer for a CD key. I have to do that now since I made a new account and I don't feel like losing my trial character.

Now, I'm pretty sure after your 7-day trial is up, which it probably is about now, I can give you one and you can continue playing for free for another 10-days, but think about this. Will i lose my trial character? i really want to keep playing but wont get money till late next week. if so please send me the key and i will be very gratefull :)

The only way your trial character will get deleted is if it's inactive for 1 year. As long as you don't delete him/her and you use that account, the character will be there.

After your trial is over, when you go to play it should ask you to subscribe or something. So at the CD-key entry page, I'm pretty sure you just enter the code I'll get you there, and it should work. The worse that could happen is that it won't work, which I can't see why it wouldn't.

So, I assume you want a key then? E-mail me at [email protected] for details.

EDIT: Monthly fee is $13.00 + tax.

I'd like a key, too. I tried the 7 day trial, but for most of it I couldn't even launch the damned program. After 3 days, I gave up on it. Although, I did like it when I could play it. This 10 day trial thing might make it or brake it for me.
 
Dude, I'd like a key - but something's up anyway, as my trial was meant to end yesterday - Friday the 8th, but today I'm still playing :p

But, I really do enjoy the game, and an extended free trial couldn't hurt ;)
