Post your latest music tracks/WIP's and comment!

You guys are awesome. I love it. I want to hear it live, or at least a better recording.

What's your plan? Like where do you go from here?

Thanks, we have a show on sunday and we're most likely going to play it there, so hopefully someone will record it. We want to record a demo soon (maybe this month) and start playing at clubs and such.

Seriously, you guys are dope. From what I can tell, your singer is incredible, your guitarists are incredible, and your drumming is right on time. I love the style of the drum beat with the crashes.

Seriously, I love your band, like you're my favorite band in the world right now. :D

Is your band called Opposing Force?

I couldn't really make out the lyrics, but I was feeling them anyway. I guess he is singing about a girl.

You've got to get that professionally recorded.

We haven't really settled on a band name yet..opposing force is just my user name. Although it would be cool to name our band after a HL expansion. And yeah it's about a girl..the chorus lyrics are

"hey little lady come with me a while, what can it hurt the price of a smile"

I can't remember the verse lyrics atm..we kinda just recorded it real fast before the end of practice and didn't really set up the equipment to get optimal recording. These recordings are pretty much for references so we can listen to them and think of what parts to add and change with the song. And yeah we're hoping to get this demo recorded so we can start getting shows. Thanks again for your comments

My band's song. I play the drums (song starts at 20 secs)
lo-fi aside, that was pretty damn banging! can't imagine you guys having any problem getting gigs :)

a little ambient/downtempo/idm ditty

and i'll repost the dnb track because it's a new page and i'm an attention whore and i want comments/criticism on something i spent more than a few minutes on: http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=51222 :p

if you don't mind the quality of an MP3 player, I wouldn't mind doing some stuff.

Hmm, actually, all things considered, the quality isn't that bad for mixing.

OK, Everything you recorded I recognize as from the band Rush. Do you have any of your own material that you'd like to make a song out of? I'm not going to do Rush but if you want to make a song then that's awesome. I'm down. I've been trying to do this for like 5 years.

You're plenty good enough. The only question I have is if you can keep tempo and if you can create your own material. And I think the answer is yes.

I've uploaded a very simple kick/snare 6 minute rock loop at 130 BPM. You can play that on your computer, and listen to it quietly with headphones so that you can keep time while you play guitar. It's like a metronome. Unless you have a headphone metronome that you can use instead. Anyway, you can even put that on repeat on your media player so that it loops forever.

Here is the song example I was able to make from a piece of your guitar recording. I added a guitar feedback sample at the beginning to make it sound like you were going live.

I had to beat match the guitar to 130BPM by stretching it, so it might not sound the same anymore. At the middle of the segment, you got off tempo a little , but I still wanted to show you what I can do so let me know what you think. I know you were just messing around. I'm sure you can keep tempo, especially with a drum beat. I mean, that's the point of drums is to keep the tempo for the rest of the musicians.

So if you want to do more and make some songs, I want you to just play something heavily distorted and really simple but drawn out in length. A basic riff that can be played at several points in the track. You can also do a guitar solo to really make a song out of it. Finally, it would be good if you could include some general feedback sounds, like your fingers brushing on the strings and stuff so that I can make the song sound like you are really there and it's not just little clips.

I actually learned in the guitar thread that I have the gear to record straight to PC, so you're going to get some better quality (unless you like working with the other stuff I made).

This sounds like a fun idea, I'll make some basic riffs (no solos for now), and tell me what you think of each one, and then depending on which ones you like, I'll pan them out and expand on them.

OK sweet. Looking forward to this.

No, the better quality you can get, the better it will sound. For me to be able to work with it, it makes no difference how you record it, as long as you can upload the file.

Personally, I prefer the traditional (old school) distorted sound of rock/metal, but really it's up to you if you want to do the digital sounding effects

I'm into the harder stuff - especially heavily distorted black metal, but that's as far as I'll go to influence you. You are the musician, I'm just a producer in this case, so it's up to you.

The more I like it, the better the result will be of course, because I'll be willing to spend long hours working on the arrangement and won't mind listening to it over and over in the process.

Also one thing that makes it easier is if you let the final note of a segment play until it stops before starting another segment, otherwise it's very difficult to make it work since I have to cut it and fade it or something. You can stop it yourself with your hand or you can let it gradually fade out on it's own.

Picking up the guitar while it's plugged in and amp noise is great too if you want to record some of that foley before you start playing.

Ok, bit of a snag, guess my sound card blows ass (It's like 5-6 years old), so either the software I'm using to record (GoldWave Full Version) isn't configured correctly, or like I said my sound card sucks, but it record pretty badly, I'd be better off with the MP3 player.. For some reason it's really quiet even with every cranked at max, and if I use software to make the recording louder, it has all kinds of hisses and pops and stuff in the background. It'd be easier to just use my MP3.. Hopefully it doesn't sound too bad.

As for the recording stuff, first I'll record a bunch of 'live' sounds like my fingers scratching on the strings, feedback, etc. Then like I said, I'll record a few licks and riffs, I'll keep most of them distorted (tbh I like any music as long as it sounds good, so I'm open to anything), but I'll get a few ones with digital effects and a few with regular rock kind of sound, but I'll make most heavy metal sounding. Just for some variety for you to choose from, then when I create around 15-20 riffs and licks, you just choose your favorite one and I'll expand on it.

Are you sure you're using the line out or headphone jack from your pedal? A guitar signal needs to be amped to line level as you know, before going into the line in on your pc.

My pedal has 5 inputs:

Headphone
Guitar line in
Amp line out
Power
'Jam-along' (plug your MP3 player in it so you MP3 plays while you play with it)

I plugged my guitar in the pedal, the pedal into the power, and I plugged the headphone cord into the headphone jack in my pedal, then plugged the other end of that into my speaker headphone jack.

EDIT: FFS I ALWAYS DOUBLE POST IN THE MUSIC FORUM FOR SOME REASON SHIT!

All I do to record through the PC is connect the pedals I want to my guitar, and then connect it to my sound card (the slot I would use for a microphone) using a normal guitar lead to small jack audio. The sound is perfect.

My pedal has 5 jacks:

Headphone (Output)
Guitar line in (Input)
Amp line out (Output)
Power (cocks)
'Jam-along' (plug your MP3 player in it so you MP3 plays while you play with it) (Input)

I plugged my guitar in the pedal, the pedal into the power, and I plugged the headphone cord into the headphone jack in my pedal, then plugged the other end of that into my speaker headphone jack.
Lol woah woah woah. You plugged an output into an output? Ugh. You plug the headphone port from your pedal into your line IN on your soundcard. Do you understand the flow here? The audio goes from your guitar, gets boosted by the pedal to line level, goes out the headphone port of your pedal, into the line INPUT on your sound card.

Hope this makes sense.

I should probably try a bit more.. I plugged it in a few different ports on my sound card, and the second it didn't work I pretty much pulled it out and tried the next.. Will post in about 10-15 minutes with results of trying harder.

Sometimes soundcards use one port for both mic and line in, in which case you need to set in your audio settings to make sure it's functioning as a line-in. Otherwise your already line-level signal gets boosted and the world explodes.

It would help to refer to your soundcard/drivers manual.

Nah, thinking back on it, my sound card does have a line in for mic (which I've used for a mic before, too..), the reason I didn't think it was working is because I didn't hear anything through the speakers :p I'm stupid, I realize now that if I want to hear it through an amp, I just plug my amp into my pedal, and it all goes down smoothly, records nice, and I can play through the pedal/amp.

http://www.zshare.net/audio/1688674103218156/ - Just a test.

Sounds so good, with no amp or background noise or anything.. I'm really surprised, and a little pissed I had the equipment for this all the time..

I first had it at the highest bitrate it could go, but it was a little.. big in file size, so I shrunk it.

Atleast I didn't blow anything up plugging things into the wrong holes D:

I didn't use my Les Paul for this one by the way, this is from my Ibanez. Picked this bad boy up for $75! :D

Why does that track remind me of Daft Punk?
Dog-- said:
Around the World, maybe?

HA. OK How about this?
daft dog virus.mp3 - 0.89MB

lol.

I can't match that guitar any better unfortunately. It fluctuates in tempo a bit. Dog decided to do it faster mid-way through, then changed back... or whatever.

EDIT - oh. The test sounds fine. I don't hear any hiss. just make sure to do a quick test before you go on and record for 10 minutes. You'll be pissed if it wasn't set up right and it's all for nothing.

Crazy Harij, I like your tracks, especially Highway, and the latest one you did.

So much stuff happening. I CANT KEEP UP : )

Dog-- Shortly I'm going to list my favorite effects that pedal has, after hearing a demo of them. I'm hoping your pedal has the same effects and numbers as the 250 or else this is a wasted effort.

some of the ones I like that I've heard so far (starting to number them if that helps)

34 BIGROM
36 FUZKNG
TWNRVB
MTLFUZ
MTLHED
KILLER
DC/AC
STACK
CLNCMB
38 CHIMEY

BOOGMN

- Those are from the website that showcases the 250?

Don't bother numbering them, my pedal was used anyways and has half it's memory wiped, I can duplicate those by making my own. List the ones you like, and I'll check them out.

I'm not starting anything today (other then this studio I set up in front of my computer.. lol), I only got 4 hours of sleep due to me trying to get to a normal routine again (I tire myself, then go to bed at a regular time like 11pm, rather then 5am), I got the next 3 days off work, and nothing else to do, so I'll be working on this stuff.

My pedal has the same effects, just not the same numbers.

EDIT: Maybe if we end up with something good, we can include a bass player, or keyboard or some other instrument?

No rush. I'm done for the day TBH. I have to get dinner and then fill out two more job applications. There are a few more that I like, but I'll get back to you on that.

No matter how much work I put into this one.. ****ing thing.

There are brief moments where I feel something, but then it's gone. The song is missing something. I think it needs some kind of substance as it's just like a funky drum symphony, but I can't find anything that goes with it.

defeat feedback remix.mp3 - 3.42MB

Could use some feedback please.

EDIT - I think there are plenty of areas where I need to work on which drums come in at which time, and there are some good parts that I don't flesh out or use more than once or twice, and there is some stuff that comes in at the wrong time or is overused. I need to clean up the arrangement even more.

it's so ****ing complicated and difficult to work on, but I think this song could be cool.

OH GOD MY FIRST SONG here and it's horrible heh.

Yes, I was messing around with a DJ tool. And guess the crap I came up with, you must listen to the scratching noises and turn tabling, pretty intense. If I'm ever making music, I'll stick to my guitar for the time being. Once I buy the line in cable that connects my amp to my com, I'll upload some decent stuff I've made.

Insane clipping is insane.

Agree, needs tone, melody, etc. Are you using drum loops or syncing samples yourself?

My suggestion is to get a small mixer with firewire or USB out, then you can mix stereo or from multiple amps/sources.

Something different this time - probably the best song I've made so far:

reflections of the sun.mp3 - 2.29MB

How hard is it to learn to play guitar like that? Because I'd rather do my own stuff. It seems fairly basic to me.

Sample packs never really work well to carry a song with guitar.

Clipping? What's that?
it's when the source volume is so loud that it clips the edges of the waveform off and the result is the worst kind of distortion.

To reduce clipping, lower the volume of the sound you are recording so that the level meters don't go past yellow. (wiki this stuff if necessary)

Song is kinda hot though, especially for a first effort. Nice work. Maybe cut the beat sometimes when you scratch. I guess you recorded live tho so that might be difficult.

Agree, needs tone, melody, etc. Are you using drum loops or syncing samples yourself?

I made some of the loops in FL Studio but lately I use a lot of pre-made loops. Making drum loops is something I have done hundreds of times but it is time consuming.

... don't know what you mean syncing samples. Am I synchronizing them so that the drum loops interweave with each other at the right times? Yes.

I meant "are you using samples of single drums and making your own loops?"

it's good but a bit sampley for my tastes, the fills don't connect well with the loops. i like the way your different guitar sequences interplay with the excellent bass line

I really enjoy this track, there's a flurry of hits and random sounds that are a tad disorienting, but the bass, drum and expansive pads are ****ing great.. I think you should put the focus on them. There's a kind of bad ass klepacki edge to this sound that I can barely grasp myself.

Went through the hard drive and discovered a track I made back when we did coke. Figured I'd post it in it's original, unedited form, for historical purposes if nothing else. It's pretty ****ing kicking!
http://media.putfile.com/coke-side-of-music
This is my favorite one of yours. I wouldn't mind putting it in my rotation if I had a copy.

Speaking of old stuff, this is my first full song I made in like 2001 using incredibly ancient software. I actually don't think I've modified it since 2001, but I recorded it in like 2003, so I may have played with it a little.

the last version of my first full song.mp3 - 3.19MB

That's rather funky, T. Hirschberg. However, it got a tad loopy... The marimba sound is lol.
