Post your latest music tracks/WIP's and comment!

If you're referring to my previous post, I'm not picking up on any glitch you may be hearing.

The Distisec stuff certainly has a lot more glitchy stuff, but that's not so much a product of influence so much as I see it as flirting with abstract noises and turning identifiable sources into something completely different. It's a hit and miss affair, as the trick is taking that abstraction and focusing it into a proper song instead of a hollow trick.

I'm still very intrigued in the potential of delay effect modulation, automating wet/dry, feedback, and step values. I can use it to make a neat, amorphous effect that seems to shift beats around in their sequencing just slightly enough for it to be recognizable while being somewhat "sloppy". Along with the chorus/flanger device, I've gotten effects that make it sound like the original audio source is spawning unto itself, imploding, unfolding, et cetera. I just don't know how to put a handle on it yet.

ie. "Photoshift Hole" WIP loop

Eventually, I'll recognize I've hit a ceiling in Reason. I really want to learn a program like Reaktor, where I can start constructing my own instruments and ensembles. But it has a steep learning curve, and I've never succeeded with forcing myself to learn something I don't quite need yet. All of my progression has been a series of fortunate stumbles that have come naturally without thinking too much.

Heh, I find just setting the feedback to max and going up and down on the delay time to be fun in itself--reminds me that Reason could also be used to make some pretty interesting sfx.

Yeah, I find that's the only way to achieve the "slow down/speed up" effect since Reason doesn't support recording tempo changes.

Yah, 'twas the Amen. I'd say I use it in about 30% of my tracks, to be honest. You just can't recognize it usually unless you try to listen for it. Like:

"Loqr" by Distisec

Nine Inch Nails - Piggy (drum cover)

I was singing along the entire time.
Edit: The more and more I listen to this, the more I'm mesmerized by it.

So I'm slowly getting the hang of Reason. Vegeta was right in saying Reason is a lot more straight forward than FL; I'm liking it a lot more. However, I always reach the point where I don't know what to do with a track. I've got the percussion down for the most part and the main bassline. And that's it. I have no lead, uh, melody (?) and I always hit this wall when I'm trying to make something.

Well, you're a nub! It's to be expected. :)

You can always upload what you've made so far and open it up to critiquing.

Gotta start somewhere.

I'd just spend some time reading the manual so you can get familiar with some basic concepts you'll be using all the time.

Yeah, you do just about everything with a keyboard.

And it's weird -- I've been in band for three years before (I was percussion, so I didn't have to learn notes) and I've been in choir for a total of eight years... but I can't remember anything from there. We mainly just sang old, popular songs, so I knew how they went anyway.

[edit]

Well, I took the 4/4 loop I had and spread it out to make sort of a proper sounding track. It's only 1:36, but, like I said, I don't know where to go with it. It's simple and features the classic build-up, tear-down technique. If the drum loops sound familiar, they're the base, built-in loops... the only changes I made where simple, nothing on the sequencer. It's my first.

Aging Ashes

Nice, I'm 18% done downloading Reason :bounce:

btw, WHY IS IT 2GB?!?

I like it. Don't really know what else to say :p *shrugs*

Here's something I made in FL recently:
http://media.putfile.com/Yup-57-14

It's a fairly short & simple WIP but I think it sounds nice...and a bit familiar. I always wonder if I'm subconsciously copying something I've heard before D:

Before FL I was playing with stuff in Acid Pro 6...there's things I liked more about that program but I really want to try Reason now.
Really though why is it 2 freaking GB?

The 2 GB size is probably due to the army of samples, loops, and preset patches it has and the Orkester soundbank that is undoubtedly with it. Not to mention the program itself.

^ Thanks, I know what you mean :p
TBH the whole track is pretty messily laid out and lacking in different sounds/melodies.

I've yet to make something that I actually want to finish/polish up :\

that's pretty cool quofused

edit: listening to percocig ..reminds me of what I listened to in the late 90's, pretty cool

Reminds me of Lentic Catachresis with those kicks, and the whole feel.

Really awesome... fast and complex. I think maybe it could use a more prominent lead though, imo.

you bring the music, I'll supply the doobies + party favours ...oh know any good babysitters? perferably one that wont raid my liquor cabinet

Do March of the Pigs and I will love you forever.

[edit] Holy crap Neptune. I almost thought I was listening to NIN.

Don't compress (is that the right word for the track having very little volume range throughout?) it next time, and the background synth should vary more. But damn, nice job.

First thing I started in Reason so far:
http://media.putfile.com/reason1-90
The drums are just a pre-made placeholder, but they kinda fit. I haven't tried to do much with it yet, probably because I still don't fully know how to use the program...

And now to find some tutorials...anyone want to recommend one?

March of the pigs + All the pigs, all lined up - http://media.putfile.com/March-of-the-pigs-drum-cover-cut

I don't know what happened here, I think I accidently deleted the first half of MOTP and didn't notice it, saved it and closed it, and only noticed it when I first listened to the output file. I'll record it again later and put it back up again. Also I kinda messed up at the beginning of "All the pigs all lined up"..but oh well lol.

Well, I've uploaded a collection of breaks that I've acquired. They've already been sliced, obviously, but there's nothing stopping anybody from altering them if they want to. Some you may already have or are already used in some variant in the loops that come with Reason, but these are just their original, unaltered forms. You've undoubtedly heard some of them, but quite a few others are more obscure. Quality sometimes varies, simply because I can't find cleaner versions, but then I generally screw with them in some way so it doesn't matter to me personally.

Breaks include:

"Amen" (3 bars), "Mardigras", "Hotpants", "NT", "Scorpio", "Apache", "Spinit", "Synthetic Substitution", "Tightenup", "Williepass", "Whole Thing", "Assembly Line", "Barry", "Hitormiss", "Join_the_gang", "Superman", "Sweetpea", "The Worm" (I don't use this nearly as much as I should), and four variations of the "Think" loop. Also included are two breaks that came with FL Studio ("DnB" and "Ringmod") that I sliced, as well as "Squigglebeat" which was just a treated break I exported from Reason. That makes a total of 25 breaks.

Absinthe's REX Breaks

Hope some people have fun with these. :) I know some people had issues with Wikiupload before, but seeing as how it's an archive instead of an audio file, I don't think there should be any problems.

Here's what I've done with that track so far:
http://media.putfile.com/Reason0

After listening to it for the 100th time it sounds pretty meh...but I'm gonna call it finished. Comments/suggestions are still welcome though :)

Also thanks for that, Absinthe!

Me and my friends are doing some music together, nothing serious... just for fun when we're bored and drinking beer.

http://media.putfile.com/Omg-Nuclear-Men

None of them are really finished, we're just playing around until we get our asses into gear and finish building our SID-synth :)

Btw, the singing on the first one is done on a laptop which lowers the volume when it feels like it... so thats why the quality kinda sucks. But you know, thats the whole thing with it! :p

****ing great songs majestic!!!

I've mostly been dabbling with my microkorg now, have no internet access again, i'm at a lan caf? right now. I found this great jazz theory site with my cell phone, i've learnt ****ing tons with it! http://www.petethomas.co.uk/jazz-theory-beginners.html

check the different sections to the left. It's really taught me alot on odder chords, extended chords and making cool progressions. I really suggest you read it if you're abit tired of using the typical 3 note chords with typical scales. it's pretty insane to make a several chord progression containing almost all 12 keys, and making it sound good. it really freshened up my interest in melody and chords.

Long time no see, CrazyH! Thanks for the comment :)

I should really sit down and study stuff like that, but I come up with excuses to do other stuff instead (maybe I have too much stuff to do...).

Anyways, when you will be uploading new songs? I havent heard from you for a long time now.

Bwahahaha, rough vocals sound like a Cookie Monster impersonation
