Spent a few hours on the track Absinthe posted. Posted it because of coaxing/encouragement/DO EET from Qonfy.

The only thing that bugs me about it is the piano's filter. It sounds slightly muffled, but I chose to keep it low, otherwise the distort at the beginning would be deafening. I would have liked to redo some of the drum sounds but laziness took over.

I'll post the .rns if there's any interest.

I love the glitchy intro, like it's crackling in. Also the more prominent pads. The slower pace was also more fitting. I like it more than the original. :)

This is the kind of thing I'd like to see a continuation of. I'd like to see the .rns just for the sake of comparison.

This Thread Should Be Sticky! Why Is It Not Sticky? It Must Be Sticky!!!

Woot! Hoped you'd like it.

For some reason the original on Wikiupload is corrupt (at least for Qonf and I). You might want to post it again for others to compare.

BTW my rack setup got really messy, hence why I just clumped everything into Combis. Go laziness.

Along with Absinthe, I too like it better than the original. Great work, Vip. :)

"I'm Still Ill" by Distisec

Made this quite a while ago when I was in a pretty bad spot. I was browsing through my project files when I came across it and decided to upload it with a few tweaks.

That was pretty good, but um... The singing made me lol. Not my thing I guess.

I really liked the guitar in your recent track Sea, the vocals aren't my cup of tea, as you said.

I've noticed that having a keyboard helps tremendously. It's so much easier to work shit out than having to draw crap on the sequencer then go back and see how it sounds. Anyway, I'm really loving this keyboard; it has lots of sliders and knobs, which aren't much of a help now, but as I continue on, I can see them gaining functionality. It was a great purchase (and $100 less than retail, too!). So after two weeks of messing around, here's my second track. It's mainly just me messing around on the keyboard looking for what works. It's decent, even though it may be a bit corny. Anyway, tell me what you guys think.

Lots of Letters and Symbols That Don't Mean Anything

Good stuff, I like the bit that starts around 1:03, but it's pretty loud.
Actually I like all the "instruments" (w/e you wanna call them) that you used. They fit nicely together.

Good stuff. Naudian's right about the mixing; the two little 'solo' synths could be softer, but don't worry about stuff like that now. Just stick to what you're working on.

yeah, going to go back and rework this one later. add some guitar parts, redo the whole second half. anyway. tell me what you think.

clicky clicky

^ I think it's great :O Did you make it in Reason?

It works really well as a nice ambient track the way it is. How long you been making stuff?

Yep, that sounds awesome as an ambient track. Fantastic.

@ Naudian - nah i made it in ableton. i've been making stuff for a few months now, i'm really enjoying it. thanks :)

@ Qonfused - thanks haha

@ sea - thanks, and yeah soundscape works well i'd say. ill try what you've suggested with the guitars. ill post an updated version of the song when i get around to doing that.

thanks guys.

Okay okay, got an artist account up and running, and there's some streams of my most recent songs. One's a breakbeat remix of what I think is a song from the Amelie soundtrack, there's a song I made with two of my friends with an awesome guitar track by my mate and one's a track I made with my brother just recently. Enjoy!

i listened to the first track, and it wasn't bad, i liked parts of it but it felt like it was a bit long for my taste. yeah... the song i posted was like 5 minutes of ambient noise... so i can't really complain.

i just downloaded the super furry animals, so i wanted to give them a listen, but i promise ill listen to the other stuff later.

Yeah, it is a tad long. Thnx for the comments! (and I like ambience. Especially five minutes of ambience)

New Track,
uh it's dark industrial (?)

Unholy Temple (inspired by NOD from C&C)

Kinetic, cool stuff on your AS page! I have an old account I just updated on that site, ima add j00! :)
Im shit on keyboard, which is obvious from most of my tracks :D but your stuff r0x my s0x.

Undertone, Liked your ambient track I found it very interesting. I like shit like this! :D It sounded like the audio was clipping in some parts though (keep and eye on that volume!)

Sea, I like the track just a nice generic metal(?) the vocals are pretty extreme o_o I think they could have beened mixed a little lower, Also I think it would suit a slightly faster tempo!

Qonfused, cool track - keep at it. I think the lead synths were a tad loud yeah but cool stuff nontheless.

I want to hear more of your stuff guys!

March of the pigs + All the pigs, all lined up - http://media.putfile.com/March-of-the-pigs-drum-cover-cut

I don't know what happened here, I think I accidently deleted the first half of MOTP and didn't notice it, saved it and closed it, and only noticed it when I first listened to the output file. I'll record it again later and put it back up again. Also I kinda messed up at the beginning of "All the pigs all lined up"..but oh well lol.

Hyperpower and The Beginning of the End

You should put an O-Ring on your snare, or some kind of home improv.

And tighten up that highhat for March of the Pigs? (Atleast, they don't have it that lose for the original song itself ;P)

I lowered the volume on the lead synth in Lots of Letters and Symbols That Don't Mean Anything. It flows better now. I didn't fix the keyboard playing, I might go back and redo it later, but I need to move on. I'm working on something right now, but it seems like it'll be awhile until I release something. I'll get better with practice.

If you play around with the keyboard playing on Lots of Letters, try playing around with mellowing out the sound, using like, Compression or something? I'm curious as to what sound that'd make

Mixing vocals is really difficult for me. My microphone is basically a piece of junk, so in order to keep the lyrics distinct and understandable they need to be powerful enough to shine through. Unfortunately, since my equipment is poor and doesn't capture a decent frequency range, there's no thickness to the sound, and I'm forced to compensate by mixing them higher. It's more a problem with growled vocals like those, because wind noise interferes with the audio quality as well (you using a lot more air to produce those than regular singing) and obviously since they're lower in pitch they rely more on bass frequencies, which just don't get picked up properly. For guitars and other instruments it's not so much of a problem because they don't have to be that distinct to have a presence, but vocals are more important in that way. Though, to be fair it's not like I'm mixing for every sound system out there, so it's possible that differences in speaker setups cause them to sound louder than on my own (filter presets in programs like Winamp can cause this).

Thanks for the input, though. I'll try to keep things in mind for next time.

Although I didn't listen to your track yet, I'll try to give you some tips based on what you've said here.

For your vocals, use compression to even out the dynamics in the signal (if you don't already). There are a lot of instruments that can get by and sound good without compression if it is a very good performance, but for most types of music, vocals will always need at least a small dose of compression to fit in a mix well. From there, it will be easier to EQ and use other post-processing as needed. This will probably aid you significantly in getting vocals to sound distinct and upfront.

I would also recommend toying around with reverb a bit after you've got the compression and EQ how you want them. I find that a good starting point is to bring the reverb up until you can start to hear it, and then back off about a dB. Your mind won't "hear" the reverb trails, but it will subconsciously register the added ambience and the vocals will fit in a little better. Be careful with the decay times (for modern sounding mixes, I'd keep it under 500 ms at the most) unless you want it to end up sounding like some cheesy 80's vocals.

What kind of microphone are you using? To get a professional sound, you'd need to get a nice condenser, but you can still get by with a decent dynamic microphone. If you have about $90 to spare (and don't tell me you don't), pick up a Shure SM-57. It is a workhorse microphone and will work for just about anything (well, maybe not a kick drum) if you have the time to mess around with placement. If you're using a really cheap, Radio Shack microphone or something like that right now, I'd advise you to pick up an SM-57 and I'm sure your recordings will improve dramatically.

As for the air noise with growling vocals, you can also buy a pop filter (AKA: wind screen) for pretty cheap. If you're crafty, you can Google how to make one yourself. It's really easy. And trust me, even for growling, you're not going to need many low frequencies for vocals. I usually high-pass vocals at about 150 hz. If you have anything below there and you start some growling, it's just going to muddy up the mix insanely.

A few years ago, two friends and I decided to start a band. These two friends happen to live in Australia and New Jersey, and I live in Texas. We decided to try out the idea of an online band and see how it would work. Anyway, we ended up writing an album's worth of material pretty quickly and started recording our stuff. Over the past few years, we've ended up writing, recording, and scrapping and starting over various times as we get upgrades to our equipment and find better ways of doing the whole process. We're finally at a stage where we can finish the album at high quality and things are running pretty smoothly.

Anyway, here is a clip of the outro of one of our songs called Aftermathematics. The mix is still a little rough but I think it's coming along pretty well. The vocals have not been recorded yet and there will also be synths added to the final version.

By the way, I'm playing guitar and doing all of the mixing.
Let me know what you guys think.

I like the guitar sound, but it could probably use some variation. I think the slowdown on the middle could use more drums. Good theme song. For some reason reminds me of 1990's game intros... like C&C. :O

Listen to it again tomorrow and see what you think then lol. I know what it's like after spending a stupid amount of time on a track... you cant stand it by the time you've finished :D[/url]

This is the story of my life as far as mixing goes. I work on mixing a song for hours and hours until my brain is just lying to me and I don't even know what I'm hearing and then I give up. Then the next day I listen to it and I'm like "Hey, that's not too damn bad!" The process repeats until I'm finally satisfied one day.

You're quite lucky there, mostly for me it's the opposite - I'll spend the time tweaking the bits I don't like and think it's eventually done. Go back to the tracks after they've been forgotten about and think, that's shite! What was I thinking?

I should have hopped on this thread earlier. Didn't realize we could post MIDI stuff.

Our "online band" that I spoke over earlier writes all of our stuff in MIDI. This is the last song we wrote but we decided not to record it. A bit of a shame because I really like the song, but oh well.
