viper: doesnt work at that length, needs some variation. but i like the vibe. beat doesnt really fit in

naudian: like pistons. got a nice thing going on. like vipers, could use variation. meteor shower is really cool!

A couple I felt like posting. None of them are really what I'd consider done, except for maybe "Petrotil". Mostly I was just getting into some shrooms and exploring within that mindset. Should be warned that they are all fairly repetitive, some more than others. I got hooked on particular sounds and felt the need to hear them again and again.

"Petrotil" by Distisec

Cavernous, almost ambient track. I liked the panoramic twittering, the disheveled square line, and the rise of the voices at the end.

"Clipsub" by Distisec

Loopy thing. I just really liked the sick, warped sound of the main synth, and the off-kilter hi-hats.

"Niovx87" by Distisec

Whiplash drumkits with a synth that seems to warp in and out of the foreground. It becomes a bit glitchy later with a lot of stutters and delay modulations.

Those were interesting, Absinthe. I liked Niovx87 the most, but I'm partial to glitch stuff anyway (not necessarily glitch, but sounding-like-that stuff). Your stuff really sounds like something I would hear off a true EP; take that as you may.

Theotherguy, I liked that, for some reason. I usually don't like that type of stuff, but for some reason, I'm really like the main line and the singing; the infrequent off-key actually adds to the feel. I dunno. Good song.

I finally finished my newest thing after nit-picking for the past week. I might have cluttered it with too much shit. I guess I have to draw a line somewhere to quit before I do that again. Anyway, when I first started, I had troubles with even starting a melody. Now it's easier. I'm slowly progressing, I guess. I look forward to your comments.

Kick N Spoons by Qonfucius

I guess this would be my first contribution for this thread.

In writing terminology this improv would be the equivalent of a prewriting technique (brainstorm, first draft) so obviously it is a WIP. And it is going to be heavily edited to make it sound as beautiful as I can.

Oh yah, don't mind the strange dialogue at the end, it's just my dad barging in and interrupting me.

I think it would be really good idea from now on if we rate the songs we poast on a scale from 1-10.

So, the brand spanking new Reason 4 is within my possession. I'll admit that I was first taken aback by the new interface, even though I knew what to expect. Slight learning curve, but everything's falling into place and feels far more sensible. Thor looked daunting and I almost considered skipping playing with it. I'm glad I didn't, because I love it. Once you start fiddling around a bit, everything makes sense and it becomes an incredibly intuitive synth. With all its modulation potential, it's a pretty spiffy addition. Oh... recordable tempo changes! \o/ And the arpeggiator is good fun too.

Any way, here's something I made in the last hour or so. Nothing special. Mainly just playing with the new features. If you're a Reason user, you have to get the upgrade. It would be a crime otherwise.

So putfile is down, it seems. As is wikiupload. And Soundclick won't upload. It's like the internet is conspiring against me. So for now it seems I must rely on ze Germans.

"Prome v2" by Distisec

I was thinking of posting a little demo song of all the new features, but then it turned into another track that I've yet to finish. Tempo change is cool, but I see a lot of potential for it to be overused in people's tracks. Thor is cool, although I'm disappointed by the lack of velocity control for certain effects. Have yet to use Regroove.

The Arp is just asking for acid tracks.

What effects? As far as I can tell, almost any variable can be tied to the Key Vel source in the programmer.

Hmm, I appear to have missed some of it. I was using 'voice key' instead of 'midi key.' Interesting. I guess I should actually read the manual.

I should probably read the Operation Manual again. There are few minor things here and there that I don't know how to address yet. But... it's so big and I can't be bothered. I need to get my head fully around clips in the sequencer tracks, but so far it's come pretty easy, working on tracks feels far more expedient as a result.

Didn't even bother reading up on Thor. When I first loaded up a Phase Oscillator into it, I was taken aback thinking "Where the **** is the pulsewidth automation?". Thankfully it dawned on me pretty quickly that it could all be handled in the bottom shelf of the synth. I find it all very organized and easy to edit. My only complaint with the instrument is the same one I have with the NN-XT. It's just so damn big.

Wait, clips? Audio clips? Or just sequencing clips.

*yet to "aquire" Reason 4*

Sequencing clips. The way it's handled now, it's easier to overlap instrument sections and arrange them freely without getting into a lot of nasty micro-editing complications. Like how previously if you made two segments overlap each other, it formed an entirely new one. Not a problem if it's only a few times, but continuing with it often resulted in a lot of indistinguishable and garbled representations in the sequencer, sacrificing the original cohesion of the two loops. I'm not sure if that makes much sense, but the gist of it is that it all feels much more "clean" now.

Along with vector automation as well, I'm finding certain elements a lot more fun to play around with now. Custom modulation outside of instrument LFOs used to be a pain in the ass for me, but the whole procedure has been vastly simplified.

The only nuisance I find with the new clips is that when you shorten the clip, it doesn't delete the notes that you shortened over. Instead, when you select the clip again, the notes are sitting outside of it, often in the way of other clips, so it can get pretty confusing. Although admittedly it's probably a better idea since you never 'lose' the notes like before.

Reading my post, I realise this is probably what Abs was trying to say.

That's pretty nice. Feels a little too eighties but good melodies and such. I don't like the trippy-ness of the hats though. First synth is really great.

Too eighties for my tastes, I mean. I'm giving you my opinions man.

"Salv A3" by Anasynth

A more recent version of a track I posted earlier in the topic. Basically the same, just with more stuff added.

"Centrology" by Distisec

Seems to be a recurring warning, but it's pretty repetitive. Not necessarily due to lack of effort, but because it's supposed to sound a lot like something from the early 90's electro/IDM scene. Autechre's "Chatter" was a big influence. Oh, and there's the obligatory ominous string pads too. Seriously, did you expect something else?

"Dakk Interog" by Distisec

Got started, got bored, then went back and did something completely different. So you can really tell I crapped out at making the two intersect well. Oh well. Just keep that in mind.

Here's a new thing named Centrallege. I would type out a Xbox-hueg explanation, but, who cares.

Centrallege by Qonfucius

Good! Really like! I think you should treat your samples a bit more, get them to sound more unique rather than out-of-the-box Reason samples, but you really sound like you're getting a hang of the program and developing your skills.

Thanks for the advice, and I agree. Something I just need to work on.

Nice stuff, really interesting rhythms and sounds.

The last half - aside from the beat - is just an arp-fest Combi patch. Two subtractors and a thor all running at different rates and settings.

Synths are really great Qonf. (When are you gonna make your own though ;D ) Nah but obviously a preset alone doesn't make melodies for you. Very pro stuff you did with them. But the drums felt noobish. Snare didn't fit at all imo.

I've decided to take some money out of my savings and get a good MIDI keyboard so that I can properly learn Reason. Not that I don't love my EMX, I do love it for it's intuitiveness, but I feel that using the two in unison would unlock a lot of new possibilities.

EDIT: Also, I'm about to start giving feedback to everyone who posts in this thread. It's extremely selfish to expect feedback and not give any.

Glad to hear your interest in music production hasn't waned, Geo. Let us know what keyboard(s) you are considering.

New thing I've been working on: Stentorian by Qonfucius

Nice, but could use work. I'd personally speed it up just a tad bit, and I'd really work on getting your drumkit to fit together. The beat is fine, but the samples don't mesh well. Also try to flush/pronounce the synths a bit more.

A lot different than the last incarnation.

http://media.putfile.com/Cocky-The-Big-Gay-Cockatiel-Part-2

Still has mixing issues among other things.

I really like the woozy feel this whole track delivers. And that buzzy bass is pretty cool too. I'd work on the melody for some instruments to get some more of that vibe. Right now it sounds kind of static. So trying to fit more of that zippy punch into it would be good.
