Prey Demo June 22!

I liked it, not as much as I though I would.
But thats mainly to due with the presentation of certain aspects and the leveldesign which is to much walking trough corridors, and the context in which the action takes place. All in all pretty good game, best use of noclip till date.

I have no idea what it is you people LOVED so much.
The first alien weapon is crap , it sound bad. All in all the weapons are pretty much what would you expect from a FPS set on a spaceship. The last weapon is kind of a plasma gun , the rapid fire , really no different from other games.

The enemies are WTF. that little creature , the firts enemy you meet is not good at all. The concept of it is ugly , and he just runs at you and get irrataing - he's not fun. It seems they wanted to have the bugging small enemy type and I can't say it was done well.

The troops are regular and generic , same figure as quake4. Again , nothing really special or unique , though the AI is nice and the grenade type weapon is ok.

Voice acting is way overdone , especially the player's char. , and those one-linears really don't do it to me.

the level design is again what you expect from alien spacship , metal and metal , corridors and pannels , though it's better than D3 or Q4 , it doesn't present too much of a change.

Now we get to the gameplay. The gravity and "direction" change can be irratating. You don't notice from where you are being shot at. Though , it's a change from other games , i can't see it more than a try to refresh the gameplay and levels with those "tricks" rather than having better level and game design.
Plus it takes alot of the "puzzels" effect. In stead to try to figure how to get to some place , looking for other way , try stacking stuff , shoot at buttons that are not at reach - you just shoot an arrow to change the way the place is laid out. Although it's a cute effect and obviously some tought went into it , I see it as a cheap "way out".

Same thing goes to the spirit walk , instead of having a real puzzel with some content , you just activate it and walk trough the blocked door to press the button on the other side. Way to go..

Overall , I found the demo really Meh. There was nothing it in that was real good , it was ok and fun to some degree but honestly I don't know what is all the fuss about.

Am I the only one who didn't find the demo great?
Just remember that those puzzles are so simple because it's the very beginning of the game. It's pretty obvious that they won't just be "spirit walk through door, press button," later on in the game

I loved seeing the bar at the end, found it funny that I could hear the music playing softly from a ways off

I really enjoyed this demo, ran smoothly, no hiccups for me. The gameplay was pretty standard fps, with the fun little gravity flipping/wall walking, just like I'd expected. The enemies were nothing to fancy, and the weapons were also pretty standard, leeching was cool however. Haven't tried the multiplay yet, but I plan to. All in all, great fun, I imagine that I'll wait for a review or to, just to see how the entire game stacks up from start to end, because it seems to me those corridors and tight spaces could get really old, really quick. But if the reviews are positive, I'll probably pick this one up. And thats saying a lot because I only buy games I'm sure I'll love.

Favorite part of the demo had to be when you shrunk and went on that rock in the display, and the giant enemy came and looked you over then a few of them portal'd in where you were, that was pretty neat. Also, lots of interactivity in the bar at the start, but did anyone else keep trying to hit the use key to pick up the cans and stuff to toss em' around ala' hl2? lol

I really enjoyed that. Only halfway through because I got stuck but I honestly enjoyed that more than any FPS in the last year or so (apart from anything on Source.) It ran surprisngly well on my "just-getting-old-enough-that-it-is-starting-not-to-run-games" PC but a bit of slowdown. It's certainly the best use of the limiting Doom 3 engine.
The weaons were well-thought out, and especially the bow and the alien assault rifle, were satisfying to use.
The enemies were relatively fun to fight. Nothing beyong generic, but I enjoyed killing what I dubbed "ugly Houndeyes."

The one complaint I can level at it is your orientation as you climb those blue walkways doesn't change as it should. You can occasionally find yourself walking along the wall facing straight downwards with nothing you can do for a second or two.
Also, it should run better on my PC, but that may be because I need an upgrade.

EDIT: Yes to the HL2 USe key comment. I reckon someone should mod that in before anything.

The game doesn't have a usekey, it has that weird web interface that more annoying than usefull most of the time.

And my favorite part of the game was the sniper animation, where the weird organic thing just jumps at your eye from the weapon. So cool.

In Prey, the "Use key" is the same button as shoot which ended in me wasting ammo randomly shooting non-interactive scenery or tapping 'E' rapidly against a computer only for it to do something.
Also, I felt lost not being able to pick things up.

I reckon someone should mod in both of those things.

Another game where the players name is Tommy. It's always weird to hear them saying, "Tommy! Tommy!", because that is my actual name.

It ran great.

I'll buy it.

I will mod it.

I loved everything except some of the particles, sounds, and enemies. But I can mod those things in a day or two. (once I buy the game)

The voice-overs were awesome, and had me laughing.
Oh, god that's ****ed up.
Oh, that's even more ****ed up.
This ought to blow up some shit."

Yes. Search on "Prey demo" on some torrentsite. Loved to give you a tip, but the censur of this forum doesn't seem to like that, so...

I searched, but at that time it seems the torrent where not up yet.

I found a site with a resumable download. I hope the zip doesn't end up corrupted (BTW why do people .zip large files? I've never had a corrupted self-extracting [w/e the name] .exe and I don't think there's much of a difference in compression).

OMG that demo was grand :D singleplayer was awesome. I thought it would become repetetive but there is always something new. I love this game. You are bouncing upside down and always being disoriented.

That was innovative and fantastic. Yeah, the combat's a little generic and the AI is pretty standard, but when you've got level design like that I couldn't care less. I can see them creating some great puzzles with the spirit walk aspect - more complex versions of using your physical body as a weight, like on that gravity walkway part. Runs flawlessly as well.

I enjoyed the demo. I though the random warps were awesome. The weapons were ok, i loved the ice gun though, the frozen enemies looked ace :D

I'll get this i think :)

Read earlier in the thread. Like page 5.

They said Microsoft isn't ready to release it or something.

What Shamrock said.

They said it could take "up to a few days" before the demo is available on Live.

i ll be daaaaaaaaam!!!!

such a sweet game, totally fooking awsome. :D

I'm buying it.

There. Finished. I love the hurried cries of "Turn it off" when the enemies at the end hear you coming. Crazy stuff. I'd like to see more places from Earth TOTALLY abducted. Like the Statue of Liberty.

"It was Earth all along?" :O

That is the second time I've used that joke on these forums. The first time was more effective.

It was pretty cool. I liked all the neat teleporter and gravity tricks, but I found the "spirit" thing to be incredibly stupid.

I got an error, so no play 4 me lol!

Did you get the same error as I posted? It's really pissing me off, it seems like nobody else is getting this problem and there's no support to be found. Everyone just says it's really great, and that makes it so much worse.

Yeah, exact same thing. What are your specs? I've been checking for new drivers, but I've got everything current.

Wow, great demo. It ran like a dream with everything maxed. I like the gameplay. I didn't get dizzy from the gravity walks and stuff, but it's quite disorienting. In a good way. I also like the multiplayer. It's your basic deathmatch but with the added gravity tricks it's quite funneh. Gonna buy this.

I am looking forward to hiding in the ceiling before jumping down on people's heads and shooting them in the brain with my Assault Rifle. If they don't include that.... they fail.

Radeon x800XL
AMD Athlon 3000+
1024mb of RAM

I think I have all the latest drivers... I'm going to check. I know my ATI drivers are up to date at least, I have the Catalyst 6.5s.

That's doable. I saw a guy spawn around a vertical corner (that's the only way to describe it: you walk towards a ledge, jump over it, and make a quarter flip). I crept up 'behind' him and then jumped over the ledge right in front of him. Blasted him with my gooey shotgun and prolly scared him shitless. I know I jumped a couple of times when another player just appeared out of thin air in front of me.

That multiplayer was disappointingly laggy for me.
The server pings basically ranged from 100 to 500.

That will get better as more people start to set up servers with the demo.

I thought that was pretty grisly. Then when that trooper ally guy turned it off, I went through the portal and accidentally turned it back on. I felt horrified. It wouldn't let me turn it off again though. :(

lol same here,

this part is funny:

this demo is great, i love how the D3 engine has been used so well. All GFX on max settings 1280x1024 not probs wat so ever, gameplay is rather different, those portals are amazing seeing another level or part of the same but different area, its going to be a classic is this game, i sometimes get confused when im playing part of the level i just did on the roof now lol. I really like how they have all this imagination for this game, and that sniper where the scope comes to you is wicked. i give this 9/10 great work.

HAha. I love how everyone buys their underpants from the same place. I was dissapointed by the lack of underwear clad women. I reckon the whole game is a metaphor for a male-dominated world.

Only men escape. Evidently.

Or maybe it's just gay and you only see naked men. :|

That's a great detail. I like the organic, living look of that gun.
