Prey Demo June 22!

Yeah it's definitely not a game for the kiddies.

That damn dissection stuff creeped me out... especially when... spoiler ->

you see your grandpa getting torn apart.

Why did I feel more remorse turning the harvesting machine on than when I killed the underpants men?

Eh, I'm gonna have to say that it's not that great. Sure, it has great graphics, neat weapons, and some really amazing gimmicks/features. Not saying I didn't have a good time with the demo, but some things just kept it from being completely masterpieceful:

1.) Again, just like in Doom 3, the weapons were made out of plastic. They just didn't feel very visceral, and that's death for an fps.

2.) The story had an opportunity to break so, so many cliches, but in the end, they just seem to fall back on the tried and true. Sure, there are Native American themes, which are unique and great, but in the end, you're still exploring a generic alien spaceship (albeit with some neat toys) with a generic wisecracking hero. Why is the man STILL not embracing his heritage even as he's trapsing through the spirit world and taking advice from dead relatives?

3.) The enemies have no personality - they're just targets. Very generic targets.

4.) Overall, it just felt like a collection of shiny toys tied together with frayed string rather than a cohesive experience.

All that said, I did have fun with the demo, and the anti-gravity stuff and such was really neat - especially the puzzle solving in the spirit world. To me, it just doesn't seem polished enough to be the masterpiece everyone's making it out to be. I do recommend playing the demo, though - all things aside, it's quite an experience. It's just... after Far Cry, F.E.A.R., and Half-Life 2, this feels like a step back into the past.

I fixed it! I updated my Nforce audio drivers and it works!

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

I found the answer on the 3drealms forums. It didn't work for some people, but it works for me. There's a Human Head guy on those forums helping people out, so if you're still having problems you should check it out.

presicely. It really suffers from the doom III engine, and I would have much rather spent more time on earth running away from/fighting the aliens than on this big, ugly and plastic-looking ship. The guns all had no feel to them either. They weren't loud enough, and didn't seem to have enough punch.

I mean, it was fun for a mindless shooter and the gimmicks it had were cool, but I think people give it far too much credit.

But I did like the opening sequence alot, it seemed like a half-life type opener.

In multiplayer I found it hard to judge which weapons are powerful etc.

And as for scary things, apart from the scene you posted (with the "needles" sinking in peoples' bodies), I found the scene with the kids quite disturbing...

No, this isn't a perfect masterpiece, in fact it almost felt like a Doom 3 mod. On the other hand, this has to be one of the most interesting and wicked games to come out in years.

I can't stop thinking about playing it.

Those portals where if you look through it from one side, it leads to another area, but if you look through it from the other side, it's just clear.. The walls were the floors for the other 'dimensions' and all of these tricks, it's totally amazing. :borg: I find it fascinating, I almost felt like I really was on some gigantic alien craft. I felt like I was experiencing amazing alien technology with 'mini-black holes' around the craft. Did I mention that this is the coolest thing ever? How about the anti-gravity pathways where you walk up the wall and the camera reacts life-like where your head snaps back? Oh, that's just killer. What about those mini-mirrors you could walk into and see yourself from your own point of view? Oh, thats just ****ed up. I ended up watching myself walk through the mirror of the mirror of the mirror - in circles. :O

Whats this button do? Oh, shit! sorry guy... *SMASH SMASH SMASH.* :x I shouldn't have pressed that button. :(

Everything is so cool. I can't wait to play with id's particle engine (blood effects and projectile sparks and effects), and mess around with some of the weapon skins and sound effects.

Must buy this. Is the game being sold now?

VirusType, curious, did you enjoy Doom 3?

I agree with everything you said (except for the hyperbole ;) ), it's just that the core gameplay itself seems so meh.

It comes out Jul 10, 2006. I already preordered it before the demo.

You would be surpized what a little tweaking to the weapons, particles, enemies, and sound effects can do for the 'core gameplay'. If you know how to mod you can do anything you want. I think you just need to give the game a chance to grow on you. I thought the puzzles and everything were better than all of the other games out there. You have to figure out how to get to the next room. This is one of those FPS that has some adventure elements or whatever. It's not just running around shooting everything, you have to figure out how the hell to get past each room... It takes it back to the good old types of games. It's like a mixture of Doom, Halo, and Turok - all in one, and it's ****ing awesome.

Did I enjoy Doom 3?! I was a bit disapointed until I modified it. I've beaten it like 20 times from start to finish. Yes you could say I enjoyed it. I've been playing it for over a year almost every day, and have added new weapons, monsters, and hundreds of new monster skins and about 300 new or modified sound effects, new blood and explosions and effects.. I spent most of today adding a new monster and 100 new skins and a handful of ambient sounds and I just spent the past few hours creating a new set of sound effects for one of my new monsters. Yes. I like Doom 3.

Yep. I'll do the same for Prey. I feel like prey is an even better game.... But this time, I already know what I'm doing and can mod it really easily and quickly.

Yeah, I don't care about what anyone else says...

I'm totally getting this game... and when my Geforce 6200 comes in the mail... Oooh man, it'll be so sweet. n.n

Hmmm...no luck with me yet. Its crashed about a dozen times in the opening sequence (my vpu locks up). I've been tweaking stuff, but its not playing nice with my card no matter the settings or drivers at the moment.

The intro level ... fscking amazing. Now, under normal circumstances, it would have been sub-HL quality. However, just as the alien ship starts to tear the bar apart, a song starts playing... by none other than Blue Oyster Cult. Don't Fear The Reaper.

I felt like laughing and crying at the same time.

I should probably add :

I'll be the first to admit that the Havok physics (used in Half-Life 2 and Oblivion) has better physics than Id's engine, but I love the Doom 3 engine. As you have witnessed, it can do some amazing things, and they don't seem to hurt performance.

I mean shit I was playing it quite well on an Intel Celeron with a 9200 PCI card. Thats like the lowest end graphics card still being made - it's not even AGP.

I thought it was good, I found that child part pretty disturbing and I think its going to cause a ton of controversy.

And I'm still trying to figure out why he was able to so easily brush off his grandfather getting murdered by that machine, and still be able to make so many wise cracks.

Same way most other game characters seem to get away with killing millions and millions of people and not feel guilt. Did you feel guilt when you shot the marines in Half Life?

Bad example... you know what I mean but it's late at night and I can't be arsed to elaborate.

3 cheers for Prey

Oh man, what an amazing game. and surprisingly, i am playing this game at 4 x AF and AA @ 1280 * 1024 resolution.

ok, i have a n00b qn. im stuck at the part after the 2 children get killed. i crawled thru one of those teleporting boxes and i land hard at this place where i see this light blue triangular platform. above i see more of those of the side of the wall. how do i get out?

i did shoot the blue things, but nothing happened. its wierd....im gonna try again..

One of the best things was, it ran great. much better than doom 3. Don't get me wrong about my negative comments, it just feels like the doom 3 engine is not meant for this game.

The weapons were cool, but I hope we get to see a mixture of alien and human weapons, because the ones we get in the demo and in multiplayer are all these uninspiring hybrids of machine/animal. The only weapon I feel has real potential as a new type of thing was that acid shotgun. It was also very cool that the spike gun also functioned as a sniper rifle.

Also, I hope that somewhere in the full game, there are friendly NPC's. I'm talking military guys or something. A little robot like in doom 3 just wouldn't cut it. I also hope that we get to go other places than the spirit world or the alien spaceship, although this is highly unlikely.

I'm pretty impressed with it, I hope the wall walking isn't abused though, I also hope that the story doesn't end up being something contrived. The multiplayer is not really something that interests me.

^^ sets his expectations pretty high

I dont think I am, considering hl2 has many diverse areas and friendly NPCs :|

WOW!

Just played this game. FPS games has needed a new solid groundbreaking game for a while and this looks like it was it. Doom 3 was repetetive and a dissapointment and HL2 was weak and didn't bring that much new to the table but this game was unreal - so many new elements and it screwed with your mind, it was a totally fresh experience which no game has done to me like this for as long as I can remember. I've never experienced that feeling of what happened in the bar and seeing those people die from the huge needle machine. The world's being flipped upside down etc, it felt like a real alien ship. Hopefully it gets better and doesn't end up getting repetitive throughout the rest of the game.

Either way, I'm definately buying this one - even if it can be a little corny in places.

Prey isn't HL2. :|

Why did they put in the ability to change to widescreen aspect ration when they don't offer any widescreen resolutions?

My dad has a widescreen that supports 1680x1050 res but prey apparently doesnt do widescreen even after switching the ratio. They still remain 4:3. Seems stupid to me.

Fun demo overall though.

Well I played it a couple hours ago and...

It's great! Definately lives up to my expectations. The portal and gravity tricks were really cool, I can't wait to see what they have up thier sleeves in the full game. It had some great nasty scenes, and decapitation on zombies ftw. The fighting was solid and the art direction was outstanding.

But it's far from perfect. The story has potential, but the voice acting and dialogue, especially Tommy's, was terribly cheesy. The environments and weapons, while plastic, were passable, but the character and enemy models downright sucked. The Doom 3 engine is apparently terrible in this department, Doom 3, Quake 4, and now Prey all have hideous models. ET:QW's are alright, if you like fighting action figures. Compare the lead female character in Prey (Jen) to the one in HL2 (Alyx), there is no question which one looks more realistic. I think the Source engine would have been a far better choice for Prey in almost every way, since there are virtually no scenes that take advatage of the dynamic lighting.

I'm buying this without a doubt though, its weaknesses are insignificant compared to the sheer awesomeness.

Loved the singleplayer aspect and MP is crazy and fun.

Can't wait to pick this one up.

Graphics schmafics. I don't care if source could make characters more believable the game kicks ass as is.

i beat the demo, it was so much better than all the demos i played recently. i liked the gameplay, how the gravity changes and the wall walking. i also liked the organic weapons. the great thing is that this game runs great on my rig!

Exactly. Carmack knows how to code an engine. It's unreal how smooth it runs on almost every rig.

Just finished the sp part - damn that rocked!

Top notch experience, definately going to be picking this title up. I was surprised at how well it ran on my somewhat aging system, better than hl2/ep1 overall I'd say, even with everything maxed or near maxed.

I loved how i could do a crazy paradox type thing with the portals and chase myself. I thought this was so cool that i showed my dad. My dad said, "can you shoot yourself?" and then i said, "wuuh?..lemme check, HOLY CRAP YOU CAN!"

thats when i realized that any game where you can shoot yourself while your gun is pointed away thanks to a portal paradox and where you can fight on a tiny sphere inside in a glass jar in a room is a game worth getting.

haha
I thought I saw some gun fire, smoke or something coming out of a portal. I popped a few through and started getting return fire. So I emptied my clip and I died. Then I went back to find it was a portal that is like a mirror. So I killed myself.
It was when you are back in the bar with 4-6 portals around.

I hate how some people are saying the story is bad. Thats like reading the first chapter of a book, or watching the first 10 minutes of a movie, and then judging the whole story based on that. And the same with a few other comments; Puzzles too simple? Like they said in an interview, the first few levels are just to introduce concepts to you so later they can really throw complex puzzles at you. They show you the stuff in simple ways at first so you know what to do later in the game when they start combining all these different elements together into complex puzzles.

People are dumb what can i say.

Jack Thompsons gonna have a field day with this game.

What with that little boy getting implaed and his brains turning green, then him trying to maul you.

I liked when I blew the aliens head off and he was running around in pain like a chicken with it's head cut off for a while.

I think the voice acting was really sweet. Someone said it ruins the game, I think it really adds a lot to the game. However, If you don't like it, there really couldn't be an easier thing to disable from the mod community. So if you get the PC version, I wouldn't worry about that.

They picked the best engine for the game they wanted to make. If they picked an alternative engine, there would be some other downfalls. Maybe it was the easiest to work with, maybe it was the cheapest, maybe they needed the Doom3 engine for all the elaborate GUI's. (Graphic User Interface - the interactive computer panels from Doom 3) , maybe they liked the built-in real-time shadows, the tube textures that move, the unbelievably simple to use particle engine, the body parts that blow off into chunks, or many other reasons... I'll quit now before I lose you, but the fact remains:

They chose the Doom 3 engine for many reasons. The only reason you need to know is that they picked it because it was their best option. :dork: ;) The game might not have been as good as it is if they hadn't, so what are you even complaining about?

I don't really see any flaws in the game. I can't see how they could have improved the game any by using a different engine.

For one, my computer stutters all the time and has looping sound and freezes while playing Half-life2, (after I used lots of special geek tricks to even get the textures to not be all screwed up) so I'm not sure I'd want this game to be a source game, but I am curious why do you say, "it feels like the Doom 3 engine may not have been a good choice?" What it is that is bothering you?

This developer Human Head is making a name for itself. This is probably their breakthrough title, and thanks to the Doom 3 engine - unlike other engines, where you have to license the Havok physics, the Source engine, and anything else you might need, and then you have to do all the dirty work to make them work together, and they would have had to program the GUIS and everything. The D3 engine is the entire package and does all of that. It may not be the best at any of them, but it is one of the best at everything.

I thought I saw some gun fire, smoke or something coming out of a portal. I popped a few through and started getting return fire. So I emptied my clip and I died. Then I went back to find it was a portal that is like a mirror. So I killed myself.
Yeah, same here. At least you can keep playing if you die though, as long as you kill enough of those spirit eagles.

You probably can't do it in the demo, or have to restart the game or something.
