Prey Demo June 22!

nice but wtf is with the black bars at the top and buttom of the screen. ?
Sorry about the late reply - it appears that this topic has been led somewhat astray. The bars are there because this was a "cinematic" sequence, and they were part of the display. Here's a fuller shot with no bars. Also, there's a guy on the Prey forums that had some 4000x3000 screenshots. Yow!

but did anyone else keep trying to hit the use key to pick up the cans and stuff to toss em' around ala' hl2? lol

you can do it with the Doom 3 engine, unfortunately I'm not sure If I'll be able to remove the "developer" text. So I'm not sure If I'll be able to put this in my mod. I have it bound to the right mouse button at the moment. Before I switch it, it was the E key by default in HL2 right?

Well, here is me enjoying a can of coke with a couple of dead buddies I flopped up on the bench. See for yourself:

Combine Soldier: "Pick it up."

[ME] *picks up coke can*

Combine Soldier: "Now put it in the trash."

[ME] *throws coke can at soldier and runs*

I tried to re-enact the part in Half-Life2. :)

I put the ragdolls in the chairs, hastily, (you can actually grab and pose their limbs), and saw a coke can lying there. It reminded me of the beginning of HL-2. How could I ever forget that?

I thought this was pretty decent. The problem is that it just devolves into the usual generic FPS experience that you can already get with Doom 3 + Quake 4. The only thing that makes it different is the orientation pad things that you shoot to decide what wall you're walking on.

It started off so well with a nice RP part...

Yea I forgot about that. That was cool. That's what I was saying earlier, that the technology in the game was convincing to me about what might be capable in the universe... with so little we know about black holes and such, and Einstein's theory of relativity going on about faster than light travel, etc., time / space relations etc., it's interesting. When inside that cube you were smaller. Basically it seemed like some kind of phenomenon using their alien technology where something large can fit inside something small. You were inside the display case of that head sized container with the rock in it... and once inside, everything outside appeared larger.

The fact is, they do this and many other neat time / space warps in a way that makes the technology seem almsot convincingly possible.

I just find the game interesting, and I can't wait to get it.

Einstein's theory isn't that time actually goes slow or faster, it's that it seems to be going slower in relativity to earth. If you went at the speed of light, you'd have to send a signal back to earth of your time FASTER than the speed of light for it to be concise. Therefore, when you send a signal slower or equal to the speed of light it seem like your time is slower because naturally: you're going faster than the rate of transmission of information.

Well thats the problem with depicting aliens in movies, games, and books. We don't know what they will look or be like, so most of the ideas are very borrowed. It's hard to create a race of creatures that doesn't resemble something that we can only imagine using the creatures on earth for source material.

I mean... aliens could be invisible. They could be shape-shifting blobs of matter. I mean - we don't know what the ****.. each of an alien race could be the size of the Moon... similar to a whale in the ocean,.. swimming through the space of the universe.. ****in-A. There could be creatures the size of our entire galaxy out there. Some think the universe is infinite, and some don't. If you don't, then it is entirely possible that our universe is one of many, and the universe could be.. Blah blah.

I agree that since aliens in our movies and games are made up creatures, that they could be more creative when designing them. But - you try it. Try and design an alien race. They will probably look even more generic than the ones in our games and movies. It's actually very hard to create something that we have never seen and don't even have anything to go on - other than speculation, that ever even existed.

The ship is organic and metal... What would you suggest it could be made from? I mean, metal is natural resource on not just our planet, so I find it believable that it could be found in other galaxies as well. And if you don't believe that, then you can't argue for aliens existing either, meaning that organic creatures ..

What I'm saying is... do you think that aliens could be made from something non-organic (non-living)?

Well, I agree, they could be made up of matter that doesn't even exist on earth - some genetic makeup that we have never witnessed. I mean, intelligent, educated scientists would have you believe that if you enter a black hole you could be swallowed .. like it's the drain of the universe, and it swallows things.. where do they go?! To another dimension? There are phenomena outside of what we know, that we can't explain, and don't fit into our understanding of this universe.

1 + 1 = 2, except when you are on the planet Nubula! ;)

My less generic alien race:

untitled12bt.jpg

untitled26in.jpg

My less generic spaceship:

untitled15km.jpg

Entire thing is the size of a testicle, but when the aliens teleport you into the ship, they squeeze your molecules so that they're smaller, so you fit in the ship.

Whole mother****er is made of clear plastic.

See, it isn't that hard to be less generic with alien shit.

I'm wondering if, since the ship is Q4 esque, and those alien slaves look EXACTLY like strogg, maybe this game is a prequel the the quake series :O

HAHAHAHAHahaha :cheese:

ha, ha, ha.

You have no chance to survive, make your time.

All your base are belong to us.

Get inside the testicle-sized space converter.

Those beautiful illustrations reminded me of the Fishasaurus.

Ok I am finally getting ready to download it after a few days of put off.

I gotta say, I didn't find the demo all that appealing. The guns didn't feel fantastic (in particular, I hate automatic weapons like the energy SMG in this demo and the SMG in Doom3 that don't fire at an consistant rounds per second) and the combat was average.

Moreover, the 'story' element felt really contrived to me- I didn't feel anything about any of the characters, especially the hero. Graphically it's sharp, but I've no love for the Doom3 engine. It's not that it's not a fun game to play, but it's a long way from being my cup of tea

Lol @ your sig! :)

every other doom3 game simply looks like a rehearsal for this game, considering how they all pretty much look the same.

I haven't read through this whole thread so I'm not sure if anyone else posted something like this but...

I just finished playing Prey MP for about an hour and...I don't know how this is possible but, I feel like the gravity of the forums is going to change and everything is going to flip upside down or leftside right and I'm going to get flung across the forums....somehow...It's this constant feeling and it's freaking me out :rolling: <_< ... >_>

Sprafa, take a look at Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Does this look the same as Doom3? :p

And yeah, this gravity thing made me feel odd too after a while :D

Every source game looks the same and every doom 3 game looks the same. So what?

K, ive just finished it and, wow. Seriously fun, very original, some great touches like

SPOILER

Fighting aliens in the wrecked bar to Judas Priest

SPOILER/

great cinematic moments too. I just hope they havent exhausted all their creativity and ideas on the first few levels though....

umm every source game dosent look the same they are saying it looks the same because it has the same gameplay as doom3 does

Yea, every source game I've seen looks worse, while every Doom3 engine game looks better. Of course I'm mainly referring to Sin. Feel free to prove me wrong if I am.

I just looked it up... Looks good.

One thing I don't really understand is how Source engine games don't really get any threads in the general games chat forum. I had hardly heard of this game, or any other source engine game here.

Just tried a MP game a while ago and whoa I'm dizzy:rolling: . I think they over did it with the gravity shifting, it's just to disorientating IMHO. They should tone it down a bit. BTW I think the weapons are too damn weak I'm gonna fix that muahahaha:devil: .

@Virus

Dude, I just downloaded the file in your sig, but when I press the ~key I dont get a console. What am I doing wrong?

You put in in the base folder, like it says in my signature? I don't know it works for me. Has anyone else tried it?

(It won't work in multiplayer.)

Oh, I see what's wrong. Hang on, Ill have to upload it again. The host renamed it, it's supposed to be named autoexec.CFG

(auto execute)

you can rename it to that, and then it should work.

I've fixed it and put it in my signature again.

I had to zip it up to keep the host from renaming the actual file.

Doesn't work either. I changed the name like you said but I keep ramming that ~key and nothing happens.

Don't know of this works with Prey but since it's on the D3 engine CTRL + ALT + ~ should bring down the console. Tell me if it works.

I don't know why not. It works for me, and I just tried it again. It should work with any Doom 3 engine game, demo or retail. It has to be in the base folder of whatever game you want to allow console.

OK here is what will force it to work.

Right click the prey icon that you use to launch the game.

Click properties and cut and paste and add this in the Target box:

+exec autoexec.cfg

So it should look just like this:

"C:\Program Files\Prey Demo\prey.exe" +exec autoexec.cfg

Be sure it looks just like that, spaces and all.

That just might be the problem too. Although, for me I only have to press ~

* I just fixed a big typo so make sure you re-read this

Yep, that did the trick. Thanks!

And great work, Virus! I heard there was a pilotable vehicle in the demo as well. I dare you to unlock it!!

OK I will. :) BRB

If you follow the instructions in my signature, the file should work with any Doom 3 engine game or demo. Just put it in the game's base folder. Just type give all. You can also type god in the console to become totally invincable. You will have to type it in again after each level loads though.

OK, just went through everything. There is definitely evidence of several types of pilot-able vehicles, some seem to be armed as well. However, there is no way to get them in the demo - some of the necessary files are not included.

I can only assume that there aren't any vehicles you can pilot in the demo, since I tried spawning all of them and got some warning messages: couldn't load [the files it was looking for]

Aaah, too bad. Thanks for trying tho! I am already looking forward to all your modding efforts for Prey. Playing around with all the weapons yesterday was cool.

Prey is going to be great, and even more fun to mod. I like how all of the weapons have alternate fire modes. Thats like 2 weapons in one! I like as many ways to kill things as I can get. It's always fun to use the machine gun, then use the alternate fire to launch a grenade. :D This is something that I felt was really needed in Doom 3.

It's possible to use vehicles in the demo.

Quote from pbmax from Doom3World:

es, the pod vehicle with the gravity beams can be used in the demo.

i believe its in the room where you first pick up those green grenade creatures..

you'll want to noclip into that room so you do not trip any of the triggers that make it fly away. simply noclip up to it and you'll be able to enter it. once you do, you can fly around and use the gravity beam.

Ah, looks wild. Pbmax is one of the good guys.

I don't know, I saw no way to spawn one, but I couldn't confirm one way or the other. I searched all of the vehicle definitions, and tried them all but the best I could get was that one of the vehicles seemed to try to spawn, but no matter what I did it didn't actually appear

Did you pilot it yourself or is that a screen from D3world? I'm wondering if it's any fun. It looks wicked. :D

I stop by doom3world every once in a while, but I didn't notice a prey forum yet. It's a great forum for all things id, but there is VERY little traffic there. I could post something, and it would remain the latest post for a week sometimes.

*bump

Has anyone played the 360 demo of Prey yet? It's out finally.

I played it. It ran VERY smooth.

The lighting also seemed to be more dramatic. It looked nowhere as sharp as on my gaming rig, but I sort of like it when games have that "soft yet sharp" look of film.

I have no idea really. I think the 360 version uses HDR. Everything was glowing stronger, and the colours were more vibrant than the PC version.

Some textures were a little different, but I didn't really notice it untill I comprared the two versions side by side.

The loading times are the same, as well as the levels, they are equally long.

virus, the 360 demo is 1.17gb.. would you say they have high quality or whatever ? it's over double the pc demo's size so i would assume so.

i'm downloading now, can't wait, sounds like a winner.

Prey 360 Demo Now Available on Xbox Live Marketplace

We've just gotten word that the Demo for Prey is up and live on Xbox Live Marketplace. Go get it! Here's the official Press Release from 2K about the demo's availability:
Xbox Live(r) Marketplace is now featuring a playable demo of PREY(tm), the heavily anticipated first person shooter for Xbox 360(tm) and PC. PREY literally turns the FPS genre upside-down by introducing innovative gameplay elements such as wall-walking, gravity flipping, and portals that allow enemies to appear out of thin air.

Special thanks to the Prey community and fans for being as patient as they were when we missed the date for the demo.

I'd also like to offer BIG thanks to Microsoft for making an exception and posting the demo on a Friday. Eager gamers will now have the demo in their hands for the long Holiday weekend. Stop giving Major Nelson a hard time! :)

Enjoy the demo! Look for Prey in retail stores soon. You can pre-order here.

Hmmm, I can't say for certain, but I would say more than likely it's high quality, since there would be no reason to include low rez textures on the console. The game is set to run in high rez, and there are no options, not to mention any reason to lower this on the 360. You know?

Yea, it's almost assuredly high rez/uncompressed textures, but I don't know for sure, since there may be things that are different for this console ... different texture formats, etc.

So did you download and play it destrukt?

yeah, that makes sense.

and nope, not yet, it's @ 53% and half the people on my friends list are playing it already. :(

i think it'll take another hour max (yay for 150kbps, i <3 aus broadband :|) to dl than i'll play it for a bit and post what i think of it.
